On Data Quality Assurance and Conflation Entanglement in Crowdsourcing for Environmental Studies

On Data Quality Assurance and Conflation Entanglement in Crowdsourcing for Environmental Studies | Quality metrics | Scoop.it
Volunteer geographical information (VGI), either in the context of citizen science or the mining of social media, has proven to be useful in various domains including natural hazards, health status, disease epidemics, and biological monitoring. Nonetheless, the variable or unknown data quality due to crowdsourcing settings are still an obstacle for fully integrating these data sources in environmental studies and potentially in policy making. The data curation process, in which a quality assurance (QA) is needed, is often driven by the direct usability of the data collected within a data conflation process or data fusion (DCDF), combining the crowdsourced data into one view, using potentially other data sources as well. Looking at current practices in VGI data quality and using two examples, namely land cover validation and inundation extent estimation, this paper discusses the close links between QA and DCDF. It aims to help in deciding whether a disentanglement can be possible, whether beneficial or not, in understanding the data curation process with respect to its methodology for future usage of crowdsourced data. Analysing situations throughout the data curation process where and when entanglement between QA and DCDF occur, the paper explores the various facets of VGI data capture, as well as data quality assessment and purposes. Far from rejecting the usability ISO quality criterion, the paper advocates for a decoupling of the QA process and the DCDF step as much as possible while still integrating them within an approach analogous to a Bayesian paradigm.

"There are three kinds of lies: Lies, damned lies, and statistics." Few people know the struggle of correcting such lies better than David Spiegelhalter.
DrDids's insight:
in citizen science data quality can be influence by the quality of the media collector, i.e. the citizen see COBWEB quality models (qualified) for QA: production model (observation), consumer model (feedback) and stakeholder model (volunteer)

Hackathon-Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS)

Hackathon-Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) | Quality metrics | Scoop.it

"Climate change brings about new challenges for farmers and the way they understand the climate. But with better and easier access to climate information, the stakeholders will be able to manage climate variability and make better decisions, bringing solutions that will help farmers to reduce the risk of crop failure and have better yields.

There are various existing databases that contain useful information that can be used by stakeholders to better cope with climate, but these information need to be made more accessible and be presented in a more user-friendly way. This is where you come into the picture: We challenge you, and your team, to develop ways to turn this available data into useful and accessible information for farmers; to help them better adapt to and manage climate variability, rather than having climate instability manage them."

A point of suggestion is to integrate quality and error propagation in these methods i.e. bringing the risk itself in it!

Spatial Accuracy 2016 - Home page | Quality metrics | Scoop.it
DrDids's insight:

/// Only two weeks remaining to submit abstracts (500 words) to Spatial Accuracy 2016. Do not miss this opportunity. Please circulate this information ///

The international conference Spatial Accuracy 2016 will be held in Montpellier (southern France) from the 5th to the 8th of July, 2016. The call for abstracts is open at https://colloque.inra.fr/spatial-accuracy2016/

The 12th International symposium on "Spatial Accuracy Assessment in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences" is the latest in an academic conference series held every two years since 1994 under the auspices of the International Spatial Accuracy Research Association (ISARA,http://www.spatial-accuracy.org/).

The Symposium is a unique place to bring together experts from environmental sciences, natural resources, spatial statistics, and geographic information science, among other disciplines, developing theory and methods for assessing and understanding spatial accuracies and spatial uncertainties in, for example, mapping, monitoring systems, and spatial simulation platforms. This 12th edition of the symposia will focus on sensitivity analyses techniques for spatial modelling (ranking the importance of spatial input uncertainties) as well as the management of spatial uncertainty in Knowledge-Based Systems. Of course, treatments of other relevant accuracy and uncertainty topics are welcome, too.

Students are encouraged to submit and compete for the best Student Paper award, which will cover conference costs.

Important deadline dates

15 February 2016: Abstract submission (500 words)

31 March 2016: Abstract notification

22 April 2016: Short final paper submission (between 1000 and 1500 words)

17 May 2016: Author registration deadline

5-8 July 2016: Spatial Accuracy'16
