SNL delivers a pitch perfect 70s-era punk documentary parody

SNL delivers a pitch perfect 70s-era punk documentary parody | Punk Subculture | Scoop.it
Fred Armisen of
Saturday Night Live
and
Portlandia
starred in a nearly perfect approximation of the plethora of punk documentaries about 70s and 80s-era British punk.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

After the punk explosion of the late 1970s and early 1980s a number of documentaries were released detailing the rapid rise and fall of a number of key bands. SNL took advantage of the recent death of punk adversary Margaret Thatcher to creat an excellent parody of these comodotized Punk cash-in films.

Boston police going undercover to fight DIY punk shows | Punk Subculture | Scoop.it
Slate is reporting on a new operation from The Boston Police Department which has police using fake social media accounts to crack down on DIY house shows.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

Sounds like the end of the Hardcore days on the West Coast. DIY shows have always been a refuge of Punk Subculture, but crackdowns like this can cripple a scene very quickly.

Punk rock pummelled Margaret Thatcher - Ottawa Citizen

Punk rock pummelled Margaret Thatcher - Ottawa Citizen | Punk Subculture | Scoop.it
Ottawa Citizen
Punk rock pummelled Margaret Thatcher
Ottawa Citizen
Margaret Thatcher's often divisive policies were the gasoline that fuelled punk rock's scorching rage in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

Though not about Punk specifically, this article captures an important aspect of Punk Subculture: political awareness. The quote from Jerry Dammers captures this awareness (but lack of real protest or other action) quite well: "There was a large educated audience out there that hated her, so you could get an easy ride just shouting: ‘Thatcher — what a bastard’ for 20 minutes."

QA: Bad Religion's Brett Gurewitz on Punk-Rock Ethos | Punk Subculture | Scoop.it
Southern California punk heroes Bad Religion have long matched the ferociousness of their riffs with lyrical profundity. On their sixteenth album, Tru.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

Brett Gurewitz of Punk royalty Bad Religion on the ethod of Punk Rock and Punk Subculture:

"I hate to get into that question: "What is punk?" But it's something that's outside the mainstream, that's challenging the norms, that's avant-garde. So whatever is doing that for its time is always what influenced me."

RT @lawrencearabia: This is the archetypal music press release, full of cliches, tautology and just general meaningless waffle. http://t.co/1RrETJpy

Despite the article being kind of cliche, the content is pretty cool. It's exciting to see punk staples spreading across continents to reach new fans.

US Festival debuted 30 years ago today — watch the Ramones’ full set

As we wait for the release of the delayed “US Generation” documentary — not to mention next week’s English Beat CD/DVD combo Live at the US Festival — it’s worth marking today’s 30th anniversary of the first of two giant multi-day US Festivals, envisioned by their organizer, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, as “Woodstock West.”

On Sept. 3, 1982, on a blistering 110-degree heat at Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernadino County, Calif., the first US Festival opened with a classic punk/New Wave lineup that included Gang of Four, Ramones, The English Beat, Oingo Boingo, The B-52s, Talking Heads and The Police. Over the next two days things skewed a bit more mainstream, as fans caught The Cars, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Fleetwood Mac and the Grateful Dead.

Wozniak would reprise the US Festival to even greater success over Memorial Day weekend in 1983 — particularly with its “Heavy Metal Sunday,” which drew more than 300,000 people. The four-day festival featured sets by U2, The Clash, INXS, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings among many others.

Punk, Politics and the 1980s | Mostly Water

The result, at least in the Bay Area, was an understanding that the music was bigger than any particular person or subculture. Punk could not have existed without what came before it in rock and roll.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

A good personal account of the politics and apolitical nature of Punk as well as some interesting show stories.

Mohawks in Myanmar: punk rock runs wild in Yangon
South China Morning Post
With their mohawks and black studded jackets, Kyaw Kyaw and his punk buddies are easy to spot on the streets of Yangon.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

Punk as a subculture was declared dead by many in the West during the late 1980s, yet by a bizarre set of circumstances it managed to rise up in Southern China much later and is just now dying out. A lot can and will be learned if the South Chinese punk scene is used as a case study for subcultures and punk scenes everywhere.

But because zine culture is so closely correlated with punk, a predominantly white subculture that's more inclusive in theory than in practice, zine communities in many cities are also predominantly white.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

Zines (extremely small DIY magazines) were the main method of communication in the early punk scenes. This article gives a brief introduction to Zines and discusses a new academic project aimed at archiving all types of Zines from various scenes.

The 10 DIY Commandments « SPLINTR.COM The Independent ... | Punk Subculture | Scoop.it
The punk subculture embraced this ethos as a way of “sticking it to the man”, gravitating towards DIY's anti-consumerist/anti-establishment slant. DIY applies to everything, but none more evident than in music.
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

One of the most important aspects of punk culture is its DIY spirit. In recent years though the idea of DIY has become more of an HGTV type thing than a punk ideology. This article does a good job of returning to its roots.

Punk's Not Dead - Wired

Punk's Not Dead - Wired | Punk Subculture | Scoop.it
Wired Punk's Not Dead Wired Rogers grew up with his older brother's hard-rock albums in one ear and his mother's country collection in the other, but lately he's been taken with hip hop and punk, two genres that smart, stranded kids tend to glom on...
Taylor Olmstead's insight:

This man is keeping the spirit of punk alive, even if he isn't working exclusively with punk artists. His vision of making music available to fans everywhere as easily and label-free as possible is exactly what punk is about. I've purchased a number of the albums he's worked on without even knowing about his company. Definitely an industry figure to follow if you're looking for the next big thing in DIY tunes.

The Art of Punk and the Punk Aesthetic | Punk Subculture | Scoop.it
