Shraadh maha puja and yagna, Pitru Paksha Puja, benefits of shraadh maha puja

Shraadh maha puja and yagna, Pitru Paksha Puja, benefits of shraadh maha puja | Puja Services | Scoop.it

Pitru Paksha or Pitr Paksha is a very significant time for Hindus. Pitr means ancestors and Paksha means a fortnight, thus Pitr Paksha literally means the fortnight of the ancestors. Pitru Paksha is a 16 day period during which offerings, various rituals and homage are paid to one’s ancestors. Conducting Shradh Puja during Pitra Paksha provides peace and liberation to the souls of one’s ancestors.

As per Garuda Purana, the souls that do not receive proper rituals of Pind Daan and Tarpan don’t get peace and liberation and thus they wander aimlessly. Shraadh rituals are done to satisfy the unsatisfied desires and provide peace and liberation to these souls of one’s ancestors. Shraadh rituals benefits ancestors (12 generations back) even whose names and death dates have been forgotten.

In the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin, the Shraadh Puja is offered during Pitra Paksh period during the Krishna Paksha fortnight. The significance of Shraddh Puja and Pitra Paksha are described in many important Puranas and Vedic texts such as Matysa Purana, Garuda Purana and Agni Purana. During the period of Pitr Paksha, it is believed that one`s ancestors descend down to earth and bless their kin.

The period of Pitru Paksha is considered as inauspicious thus no new purchases, projects or ceremonies are initiated during this time. In 2014 Pitr Paksha will be observed from 08th September to 23rd September. During this time one’s forefathers, ancestors, even teachers and mentors from previous lives outside of family lineage are honored and gratitude is offered.

Pitru Paksha or Pitr Paksha will begin right after the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Pitr Paksha will start on the first full moon day (Purnima) after the festival and will end with the new moon day. It is believed that the souls of one’s ancestors of three earlier generations reside in Pitru-loka a plane between heaven and earth and when these ancestors receive Shraad rituals their soul are passed to heaven.

Legends go that when Karna who was a very charitable person died and his soul reached heaven he was given only gold and jewels to eat. When Karna asked Indra the reason He replied that it is so as Karna had failed to perform Shraddh Puja and as gold and jewels was all he had donated and not food. Lord Indra then allowed Karna to return back to earth and to do Shraddha and seek redemption.
