Coke Zero Made a Drinkable Billboard That Is Actually Serving Soda to NCAA Fans

Coke Zero Made a Drinkable Billboard That Is Actually Serving Soda to NCAA Fans | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Here's a fun way for brands to dole out product samples. As part of its sponsorship of this weekend's NCAA Men's Final Four competition, Coke Zero and Ogilvy & Mather installed a "drinkable billboard" that shoots soda through a massive straw into a public drinking fountain.

The 23,000-pound novelty is in White River State Park in Indianapolis, where the games are taking place. Coke Zero flows through 4,500 feet of straw to spell out "Taste It." Then the liquid travels from the bottom of the billboard to a sampling area with six fountain spouts where people can taste the soda....

4 Things Alibaba’s IPO Tells Us About a Changing World Economy

4 Things Alibaba’s IPO Tells Us About a Changing World Economy | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

The Chinese e-commerce giant launches one of the largest stock-market debuts in history — and points the way to our economic future.

The story of Alibaba has already become legend. Fifteen years ago, Jack Ma, a former English teacher, and his co-founders set up their Internet company in an apartment in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, not far from Shanghai. Today, Alibaba’s online shopping sites in China — mainly Taobao and Tmall — handle twice as much merchandise as Amazon.

The company’s initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange will bring in a haul of some $21.8 billion — bigger than Facebook’s — and values Alibaba at $168 billion — four times more than Yahoo....

Hiut Denim: Ten lessons from a maker | Medium

Hiut Denim: Ten lessons from a maker | Medium | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

1) No one knows you exist. You make a great product. But the world isn’t holding its breath waiting for you....

But when you look at this way, things look different: Goliaths have more meetings, more committees, and more red tape. More ideas being killed by research, more to lose by taking risks, and more outdated business models that they are stuck in. More rules, more regulations, and more good people leaving. So who cares if they never run out of photocopier paper?

Use your strengths: your speed, your instinct, your passion. Back your ideas with hard work. And yes, love can and does scale. Good luck. There has never been a better time to be a maker.

Thank you, Internet. You have levelled the playing field.

Jeff Domansky's insight:

Hiut Denim shares a business philosophy that is fundamental, enduring and important! An absolute must-read for business, small business, marketing, PR and, well, anyone who is thoughtful about how they do business. 10/10

Why 3 MIT Grads Want to Send You an Empty Box | Wired Business | Wired.com

Why 3 MIT Grads Want to Send You an Empty Box | Wired Business | Wired.com | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

Internet startups sprout all the time promising to send you just about anything via UPS. But one new company has taken the idea a little meta: They'll ship you an empty box....

...Sold is the brainchild of three graduates of the MIT Media Lab—Matt Blackshaw, Tony DeVincenzi and David Lakatos—who figured out that boxes aren’t as trivial as they seem. One-click buying has become commonplace online, Sold’s founders say, but not so one-click selling. And sometimes the difference is a box.

With Sold’s app, you take a picture of the thing you want to sell and write a description. The company uses a mix of algorithmic and human judgment to figure out how much you can probably get for the item and sends you the proposed price. If you accept, Sold posts your product on whatever online marketplace the company determine is best—eBay, Amazon or smaller niche sites, depending on what you’re selling. When your item sells, Sold sends you a pre-labeled box to ship it in. (You can track the box while it’s on its way to you.) Tape up the box, schedule a UPS pickup and that’s it....

Jeff Domansky's insight:

This is a great little case study in business innovation and social business.

Two Pens's curator insight, May 30, 2013 9:41 AM

Very cool idea. Look at the marketplace and discover the niche that no one is covering: these MIT grads are serving the seller in an interesting way by sending an empty box.

5 Signs Apple’s Era Of Dominance Is Over

5 Signs Apple’s Era Of Dominance Is Over | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...Media were no less giddy when it came to Apple’s media announcements – declaring intentions to live tweet these announcements and coveting their invitations to attend the media briefings in person as if they were non-transferable invitations to a royal wedding. Yet today’s Apple announcements are the latest example that this passion for the brand is slowing eroding – and along with it may go their biggest strategic advantage as well.

Let me explain. Apple, perhaps more than any other consumer brand, has always relied on evangelism from early consumers to propel its success. The loyal Apple devotees rave about the new device, and bring new consumers to it despite the significantly higher price tag than competitors. This raving led to their market share growth, ability to charge a premium for less and penchant for dictating unfavorable terms to strongarm partners such as mobile carriers into desperate exclusive partnerships to sell their products.

The big announcement of the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch today signifies that this era may be over for five reasons...

I guess this article is a reflection of what is taking place all over the world in some instances, globalization and collaboration have resulted in the passing away of Brand Dominance!   So, it is also about the end of Operating systems that come with expensive single user licences, thus you have open market solutions like Linux, and the Android operating systems. These are open operating systems and are in most cases free. Is that why Android based phones are edging over those phones which have proprietory Operating systems?

How 600 Bucks Buys 20 Million Users | Forbes

How 600 Bucks Buys 20 Million Users | Forbes | Public Relations & Social Marketing Insight | Scoop.it

...A better model is the model that’s been working in digital since day one: Create, seed, iterate, keep seeding, iterate some more and then “pivot” if necessary. Who gets it totally right on the first try anyway? Twitter started as a podcasting company called Odeo. Rovio created 51 games before they made Angry Birds. Flickr was originally just a tiny part of an online game. The founders of Yelp tried to revolutionize email before actually revolutionizing local reviews. And Instagram started out as a Foursquare competitor, but then scrapped the idea in favor of photo sharing. There’s a reason that “pivoting” is now a start-up cliché. Today’s more progressive companies are starting to talk about agile development. Some are even employing it. But the need for change is bigger than that. It’s not just about an agile method of development. It’s also about an agile method of budgeting and marketing....

Intresting to see how marketers can take advantage of social media's and word of mouth

Artemis Shirvani's comment, April 7, 2013 9:29 PM
It is an interesting article as ‘angry birds’ is my favourite gam. At the beginning of this article mentioned about the power of “words of mouth” in the digital market. As all of us know word of mouth in the marketing is so significant in order to increase the sales or better to say one of the best ways of advertising among consumers. So many times we did our shopping or visiting some local shops or visiting a website just as a result of our friend’s experiences. I remember well the reason that I started to play with Angry Birds games was from a friend’s suggestion and telling me how the games make me occupied and is such a fun. As this article claims that, instgram grows started in one day by gaining 25,000 users which was as a result of words of mouth. So many other companies such as You Tube with more than 800 million visitors or Wikipidia by having 38 million users are growing faster daily. But another experience that I had tangibly was about Wikipidia that even all our lectures in uni recommends us to not rely in this website but I always firstly check this web to get some idea then start searching in other reliable websites for doing my assignments. But why these companies are successful? It’s not about marketing dollars or how much money they contribute in their production; it’s about world- class production development. Those businesses’ achievement is about great product innovations that customers want. If customer doesn’t satisfied of digital production or any product they never recommend it to others.
Steffan Swanevelder's comment April 8, 2013 5:43 AM
This goes to show how a well designed product has the natural ability to market itself. "success is won with world class development". Again, meeting the customers needs with innovative products will see you attain this success. It may not be instant. Rovio created 51 games before striking gold with their angry birds game, which is almost a household name worldwide now.
