Funded Residencies | 3 International Residency Opportunities ENLIGHT 2017 – Visual Artists Ireland

Funded Residencies | 3 International Residency Opportunities ENLIGHT 2017 – Visual Artists Ireland | Public Art RFP and RFQ List | Scoop.it
Deadline: 1 April
The second round of residencies offered from the newly formed ENLIGHT project invites three European artists to undertake collaborative residencies developing public-realm artwork with technical teams based in Manchester, Stavanger and Rome.
Curated Place with SPECTRA Festival in partnership with MIRIAD at the Manchester School of Art (UK), I/O Lab in Stavanger (Norway), and Fondazione Mondo Digitale in Rome (Italy), are offering artists the opportunity to participate in a new programme and network producing and promoting light and sound artworks – exploring the meeting point of art, technology and design. Artists will be invited to undertake several short residencies with their host organisations – supported by their teams of technologists and technicians to create a new public realm work for exhibition in our existing festivals. The residencies are squarely focused on completing production for exhibition outside of traditional art spaces and developing the skills and networks of all involved.
Residencies will take place in the following production windows with hosts: July to October 2017.
Applicants must hold a valid passport from and reside in an EU Member State (passport and residency need not be the same state).
The organisers will provide:
• Hosts’ support and personnel to develop their ideas, and the resources of the host organisation
• All travel, accommodation and a sustenance budget
• An artist bursary of €2000 fee ring-fenced from all other costs
• Marketing for the project
• Introduction to local cultural partners and peers in the host cities
• An exhibition of the work in Aberdeen/Rome/Stavanger

3 Funded Research Residencies | ALMAT – Algorithms that Matter – Visual Artists Ireland

3 Funded Research Residencies | ALMAT – Algorithms that Matter – Visual Artists Ireland | Public Art RFP and RFQ List | Scoop.it
Deadline: 16 April
Algorithms that Matter is an artistic research project by Hanns Holger Rutz and David Pirrò. It aims at understanding the increasing influence of algorithms, translating them into aesthetic positions in sound, building a new perspective on algorithm agency by subjecting the realm of algorithms to experimentation.
Almat is grounded in the idea that algorithms are agents that co-determine the boundary between an artistic machine or “apparatus” and the object produced through this machine. The central question is: How do algorithmic processes emerge and structure the praxis of experimental computer music? The hypothesis is that these processes, instead of being separated from the composer—as generators and transformers of infinite shapes—exhibit a specific force that retroacts and changes the very praxis of composition and performance.
This call is directed at experienced practitioners in sound art and experimental computer music, for whom algorithmic and computational strategies represent a central element in their work. Applicants should be able to demonstrate this through their past work. They are capable and interested in exposing and reflecting their process and work through writing, discussion and other forms of discourse. During the project, they are expected to either engage with software frameworks that the project team has developed, or with software they have developed in open source environments.
The project is conceived in such way, that applicants will work collaboratively with the project team. Each residency will be preceded by an online preparatory process in cooperation with the project team (this will begin at latest two months before the start of the actual residency). The applicants are then expected to spend the two months of the residency in situ.
The residency’s aim is to carry out algorithmic experimentation (in the form of compositions, installations, etc.) in an iterative setting, with focus on process and specific constraints. Applicants are expected to work both independently and collaboratively during the residency. An additional researcher will observe and document the work process and contribute to the public exposition of the traces.
The tangible outcomes will be presented locally and internationally by the project team, and the artists are invited to attend events related to the project. We want to emphasise that research is the prime focus of the residency, but that we intend to provide opportunities for public presentation of the works and artefacts created through the process.
Duration of residency: 2 months
Start date (in situ): October 2017 (select time slots in form)
Remuneration: 5,000 EUR total (contract for work; subject to taxation where applicable). This sum is meant to cover all expenses, such as travelling, living costs and accommodation.

The privilege of a festival of this nature allows an intensity of work, creating uneasy combinations, and challenging perspectives through its ability to affect.
All festival screenings will take place at the Irish Film Institute. In addition to this, a series of discussions, talks and live performances will take place at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios (TBG+S), with many internationally acclaimed artists and curators in attendance, including James Richards, Erika Balsom, Yuri Pattison, Ann Hirsch, Sasha Litvintseva, Mark Toscano, James Kienitz Wilkins and Benjamin Cook (LUX).

Funded Residency | Institution in Residence, Czech Republic – Visual Artists Ireland

Funded Residency | Institution in Residence, Czech Republic – Visual Artists Ireland | Public Art RFP and RFQ List | Scoop.it
Deadline: 15 March
The initiative for contemporary art tranzit.cz presents the programme Institution in Residence, which initiates a creative and critical contemplation of artistic institutions.
It challenges organisations, collectives or individuals to invent institutions, experiment with formats and programmes of organisations, in order to offer an alternative ordering of functional and power relations, an innovative use of time capacities etc.
Institution in Residence offers institutions the option of residence within the framework of the legal and material infrastructure of tranzit.cz in Prague, Czech Republic (Institution in Residence). Co-operation is possible also without the necessity of physical relocation, by means of electronic consultation, financial support (Institution-in-Time-Residence/Institution-in-E-Residence) etc.
The internationally conceived residence programme enables institutions to avoid forced production, an instrumental exchange of projects and enables institutions to focus on developing alternatives to existing institutional practice.
The aim of the challenge is to revitalise political and poetic versions of internationalism and to create working relationships and conditions within the framework of temporarily constituted autonomy.
Institution in Residence is a component of Institutional Therapy of tranzit.cz, a programme which attempts to bridge the divide between the methods of work and the mission of an artistic organisation.
The product of the residential programme shall be made to measure outputs and a blog presenting reports on the experiences and knowledge gained during the residence.
The organisers are looking for:
– an independent and responsible cultural organisation, collective or individuals
– with an interest in social issues, feminism and post-colonial themes
– focus on the contemporary culture of Ukraine, Vietnam and Indonesia an advantage
– institutional history is welcome but not a condition.
They offer:
– the opportunity to make use of an office and flat in Prague, Czech Republic, for a period of two – three months in the period May – December 2017
– coverage of travel expenses
– monthly grant of 2,300 EUR

Open Call | Crofters’ Memorial, Staffin, Isle of Skye, Scotland – Visual Artists Ireland

Open Call | Crofters’ Memorial, Staffin, Isle of Skye, Scotland – Visual Artists Ireland | Public Art RFP and RFQ List | Scoop.it
Deadline: 28 February
ATLAS Arts, working in partnership with Staffin Community Trust (Urras An Taobh Sear), invites applications from artists interested in researching and developing a contemporary memorial to acknowledge the crofters’ troubles in Staffin, Isle of Skye, in the 1880s. We are seeking artists who will demonstrate imagination and sensitivity in challenging perceptions of what a contemporary memorial to a historical event can be.
The proposals will form a series of pilot commissions that contribute to an awareness and understanding in the local community of the potential positive impacts and benefits that a commissioned public artwork/contemporary memorial can have. This is a unique opportunity for artists – local, national and international, to engage in social practice and develop ideas for a context-specific artwork.
Stage 1 – submit application
In line with the requirements stated in the brief – please bear in mind that due to the nature of the project and its focus on social practice, collaboration and engaging with the community/place we do not expect finished proposals.
Your application should include:
A short statement outlining your interest in the commission including how you might approach community engagement
CV and a detailed portfolio of relevant past projects or links to work that illustrates your artistic practice/maximum of six images
Your availability through 2017
How you heard about the project
Due to the nature of the project and its focus on collaborations and engaging with the community/place we do not expect finished proposals.
It is anticipated that ATLAS Arts will contact selected applicants in late March 2017. Applicants will then be invited to an initial meeting in Skye, the costs of which will be covered.
Stage 2 – selected artists
It is anticipated that three artists will be selected. The artists will each receive £500 to work on their proposal in more detail. As part of this the artists will be expected to visit the Isle of Skye for an initial meeting.
Stage 3 – development
It is anticipated that these artists will then each be awarded £2000 to further develop the proposal. This commission explores social practice and it is expected this will include further time spent in the Isle of Skye, engaging with the Staffin community, the area and researching the history of the Crofters’ troubles.
