Don’t forget, Instructional Design is about problem solving

Don’t forget, Instructional Design is about problem solving | Proyecto Empresarial 2.0 | Scoop.it

Can you fix my computer?" This simple question (or a similar one) has most likely been asked of every instructional designer (ID), indicating a misalignment about what IDs do and what others think they actually do. This confusion is nothing new, but what seems to be different now is that those of us in the field may have bought into the confusion — or are helping sustain the misunderstanding because we have lost our way or forgotten where we came from.

In this blog we offer a quick refresher on the origins of instructional design, which is especially valuable because the demand for what we do is increasing. As Kyle Peck reminds us, "a 'perfect storm' of forces both within and outside education are about to accelerate the evolution of learning and learning design, increasing the demand for well-prepared learning designers, learning-related tool builders, and learning-related researchers."

Design Thinking: A Student's Perspective | Proyecto Empresarial 2.0 | Scoop.it

Design Thinking will always be apart of my life. Even now, I use DT’s principles to make decisions in day to day life. Because of DT, I approach difficult things in life as challenges, not problems–even homework. As I grow and change, I don’t think I will outgrow these valuable lessons, instead I believe Design Thinking will grow and change with me.

The New Experts: How Robotics, AI and Automation are shaping the future of your work

The New Experts: How Robotics, AI and Automation are shaping the future of your work | Proyecto Empresarial 2.0 | Scoop.it

This is how I opened my presentation at the KQED studios in its inaugural Silicon Valley Conversations program, “The New Experts: How Robotics, AI and Automation Are Shaping the Future of Your Work.” The event focused on the way new technologies are changing how we work, where we work and the skills we need to work. I joined Michael Chui, partner at McKinsey Global Institue, and Dr. Karen Myers, lab director of SRI International’s Artificial Intelligence Center.

We each had five minutes to open with a TED-style talk on our views of the future of AI and work. Following, the opening talks, KQED’s Silicon Valley Bureau Chief moderated a fascinating conversation that explored the future of technology, society and how employers and employees can get in front of the coming waves of disruption.

(Empathic Design) How Design Thinking Is Transforming Culture

(Empathic Design) How Design Thinking Is Transforming Culture | Proyecto Empresarial 2.0 | Scoop.it

At SAP, we practice this type of work every day. It is one of our foundational pillars and it underpins who we are as a company. While the sports fan in me likes to refer to it as game planning, the business leader in me calls it design thinking. Similar to how a coach prepares strategies for his or her team to overcome unforeseen challenges in a sporting event, design thinkers actively reimagine business models, business processes, and the way companies work to outperform digital disruption.

“Design thinking empowers us to redefine business problems through empathy and creativity”

Design thinking is essentially a human-centered and empathetic approach to innovation that integrates the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success. It breaks boundaries for businesses by rethinking current problems and developing entirely new capabilities.

Creative Thinking Skills

Creative Thinking Skills | Proyecto Empresarial 2.0 | Scoop.it

Creativity is inspired when there is a problem to solve. For example, when a sculptor creates an amazing sculpture, it’s an act of problem-solving: perhaps she must determine which artistic style to use in order to create the likeness of an object, or perhaps she is deciding which tools will most suit her purpose or style, perhaps she is assessing how best to satisfy a customer’s request or earn income from her art—you get the idea. In every case, the problem sparks the sculptor’s creativity and she brings her creativity to bear in finding an artistic solution.

Considered as an act of problem-solving, creativity can be understood as a skill—as opposed to an inborn talent or natural “gift”—that can be taught as well as learned. Problem-solving is something we are called upon to do every day, from performing mundane chores to executing sophisticated projects. The good news is that we can always improve upon our problem-solving and creative-thinking skills—even if we don’t consider ourselves to be artists or “creative.” The following information may surprise and encourage you!
