Unexpected Complexity in a Spider's Tiny Brain - New York Times

Unexpected Complexity in a Spider's Tiny Brain - New York Times | Provoked Potentials | Scoop.it
A group of researchers has found a way to study the delicate and complex brain of a jumping spider.
Tim Mustill's insight:

An interesting enough article but this also illustrates the issues with popularising science in that it does not deliver on the attention grabbing headline. If this tiny brain is 'unexpectedly complex' please tell us why rather than just showing a cool video.

This sentence from the original paper may be a bit daunting for NYT lay readership but the science correspondent could have given a bash..

..."We found nonlinear interactions between the principal and secondary eyes, which can be inferred from the emergence of spatiotemporal receptive fields". ..There is a link to the source ref but it is $31for the full paper - interesting but not that interesting me thinks!

Before the First World War: what can 1914 tell us about 2014? | Provoked Potentials | Scoop.it
Old world decline, rogue empires, killing for God – looking at 1914, we can discover that there are many uncomfortable parallels with our own time.
Tim Mustill's insight:

This is a long but superb article. I now, for the first time, have an inkling of the causes of WW1. Not quite as simple as my dads memorable but flawed mnemonic "Austria was Hungary, had a bit of Turkey dipped in Greece!"
