Plan to Finance Philanthropy Shows the Power of a Simple Question

Plan to Finance Philanthropy Shows the Power of a Simple Question | Prospect research in non-profit fundraising | Scoop.it
Several ideas about using financial instruments and a for-profit approach in the world of nonprofits are now taking hold.
MollyC's insight:

More: "By some estimates, if just 1 percent of the money in the portfolios of wealthy individuals in the United States was directed to nonprofits through new financial instruments like social impact bonds or Ms. Beck’s exchange, the nonprofit world would be sitting on $1 trillion."

Many of the commenters on this article are dubious that this would work, but it's worth a read.

Prospect Research for Fundraisers | Factary

"Helen Brown and Jennifer Filla have written the book I have been waiting for. It's the book that talks to fundraisers about research. 'Prospect Research for Fundraisers' (Wiley, New Jersey, 2013, available from Amazon here)"

MollyC's insight:

As an advance reader of this book, I can say that it's a great addition to every fundraiser's (and researcher's) toolkit. Many fundraisers need a little help in understanding that research involves much more than Googling a name and copying the search results. And researchers can benefit from hearing about the challenges faced by their frontline colleagues.

"Nonprofits seeking to protect charitable deductions may have won at least one victory: President Obama’s budget proposal given to Republicans on Monday appeared to single out the charitable deduction for a more-generous write-off by the wealthy than mortgage interest, state taxes, or other tax breaks."

Big Philanthropy's Role in Higher Education - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Big Philanthropy's Role in Higher Education - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Higher Education | Prospect research in non-profit fundraising | Scoop.it

"According to a recent Chronicle study, America's top 50 donors gave a total of $10.4-billion in 2011, rebounding from the $3.3-billion of the previous year, with its recession worries. Those numbers reflect the continued growth in the number of private philanthropic foundations in this country—10,093 were created in the 1990s, and more than 8,500 appeared between 2000 and 2009 (as opposed, for instance, to the 1,264 created in the 1970s). There are now more than 33,000 foundations in the United States.

But what grabs my attention is the number with megaresources, almost all of which have emerged over the past two decades. This is truly the era of the megafoundation."

British Program Puts Philanthropy at One's Fingertips - New York Times

British Program Puts Philanthropy at One's Fingertips - New York Times | Prospect research in non-profit fundraising | Scoop.it

"British Program Puts Philanthropy at One's Fingertips" When Sir Arthur Stockdale Cope painted “Naval Officers of World War I” in 1921, little could he have imagined that the National Portrait Gallery in London would one day solicit the public for £20,000 to restore it. Even less could he have imagined that those funds would come in part via smartphones."

"'Round Mountain' by Castle Freeman Jr. is one of seven novels published so far by Concord Free Press, which, as its name implies, is a nonprofit that creates free printed books that can be requested via their site.
