The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!)

The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!) | Programming | Scoop.it

I’ve been dismayed to discover just how many software developers aren’t really completely up to speed on the mysterious world of character sets, encodings, Unicode, all that stuff. A couple of years ago, a beta tester for FogBUGZ was wondering whether it could handle incoming email in Japanese. Japanese? They have email in Japanese? I had no idea. When I looked closely at the commercial ActiveX control we were using to parse MIME email messages, we discovered it was doing exactly the wrong thing with character sets, so we actually had to write heroic code to undo the wrong conversion it had done and redo it correctly. When I looked into another commercial library, it, too, had a completely broken character code implementation. I corresponded with the developer of that package and he sort of thought they “couldn’t do anything about it.” Like many programmers, he just wished it would all blow over somehow.

How Big is TOO BIG for JSON? | Programming | Scoop.it

Most developers know by now that JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) is the best way to work with data sets in JavaScript. C# High Performance .NET String Split

C# High Performance .NET String Split | Programming | Scoop.it

I recently worked on some heavy optimisations for BunnySpeed and noticed just how slow the .NET implementation of String.Split() can get when calling hundreds of thousands of times per second. I assume this happens due to re-creation and resizing of the result string arrays.

Not only does this produce additional work for GC, it also uses extra CPU cycles, which is especially noticable when doing a huge amount of text processing. On top of that it seems the .NET implementation uses some additional checking while splitting strings and introducing even further unnecessary CPU load. Even MSDN warns about this.

How to add Strong Name to an existing DLL and install to the GAC

We need to add strong name to the DLLs in order to install the DLLs to the Global Assembly Cache.Adding DLL to the GAC without strong name, the gacutil will through an error "Failure adding assembly to the cache: Attempt to install an assembly without a strong name".

A strong name consists of the assembly's identity  which are like the simple text name, version number and culture information and plus a public key with a digital signature. It is generated from an assembly file using the corresponding private key. Microsoft Visual Studio and other development tools provided in the Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) can assign strong names to an assembly. Assemblies with the same strong name are expected to be identical. (Reference - MSDN, Microsoft)

Beginners guide to accessing SQL Server through C#

In this article I plan to demonstrate how to insert and read data from a SQL Server or MSDE database. This code should work on both SQL Server , I am using 2000, and MSDE. I am using Visual Studio 2002, but this should work with Visual Studio 2003, Web Matrix, and the command line SDK. This code should work with both C# applications and C# web applications and webservices.
