1. Lead High-Level, Text-Based Discussions
2. Focus on Process, Not Just Content
3. Create Assignments for Real Audiences and with Real Purpose -
The CCSS standards emphasize the importance of writing for a variety of audiences. Students should "write routinely over extended time frames...for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences"(p. 41)
4.  The CCSS favor argument over persuasion-
because it requires more logic and reason, and is more inline with the kind of writing that students will be expected to do in college and careers.
5. Increase Text Complexity-
Text complexity is a key aspect of the CCSS. Look for balance; material should be difficult enough that students are learning something new, but not so hard that they give up...
