The Boston Celtics twitter handle was posted on the Parquet floor at the TD Garden in Boston. The Celtics had to ask permission from the NBA, but received it from the league office. They are the first pro team to advertise twitter on their playing surface. Mississippi State University posted a twitter hashtag in their end zones of the football stadium last season, reading #HAILSTATE.

Advertising comes in all venues obviously. The Celtics were the first team to do this, but I’m sure many more have followed suit. I know that while watching the NBA finals last year they advertised their twitter above the basket. It is a simple way to get your name out there. When someone sees an “@” symbol, they immediately think of twitter. The brand has completely taken over and it wont be stopping any time soon. I think that with their firm hold on athletics, and athletic teams realizing how important it is, social media in sports will continue to grow. The Twitter takeover is a real phenomenon.

A triple jumper from Greece named Voula Papachristou was expelled from Greece’s Olympic team for racist tweets. She mocked African immigrants and expressed support for a far right party. She retweeted a bunch of videos, ad attempted a joke towards the African people. "With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!"

This is what is scary about social media. And this is what makes it extremely dangerous. Once you retweet something, it puts your name on it. These athletes get into trouble with twitter because they don’t think that retweeting something is as bad as actually tweeting it yourself. Also, whether she meant to be offensive or not by tweeting about the West Nile Virus, she was. It came across poorly. Some people’s humor is different than others. Athletes have to be extremely careful, because this story again proves that they are more in the public eye with twitter and other social media outlets.

Stupid Athlete Tweets

Many athletes possess Twitter accounts for a variety of reasons. Many go the noble rout, promoting charities/events, giveaways, etc.

This video shows a few examples of athletes making dumb mistakes on twitter. There are plenty of examples of lack of judgement.

This video shows the negative side of athletes using twitter. The focus on athletes and exposure that these athletes get in the social media age is limitless. For all of the good that they can accomplish, there is the same possibilities for the negatives.
