Let’s stop calling them ‘soft skills’

It’s generally understood that Ty Cobb was a jerk. His teammates didn’t like him very much. But he’s still in the Hall of Fame. That’s because baseball keeps score… of hits, of runs and of catches…

This is an interesting perspective on what we call soft skills. I'm not sure we all agree what those skills are, how they might be measured, how they might be coached, etc. I do know that plenty of companies require certain of these soft skills in certain positions if that individual is to be successful and contribute to the well-being of the company. So the point that calling them "soft" skills somehow minimizes their importance is a valuable one.

48 Million Twitter Accounts Exposed as Bots

48 Million Twitter Accounts Exposed as Bots | ProductMgmt | Scoop.it

Data has never been more important to marketers, which is why it is always all the more alarming when it's suggested that a platform is delivering false analytics.

Approximately 15% of Twitter accounts — some 48 million — are bots rather than people, according to new research from the University of Southern California and Indiana University.
While the research is troubling news for Twitter, which has struggled to elevate its user base in the face of growing competition; it is perhaps more frustrating for marketers who trusted the engagement data.

The report elaborates on the percentage of bots, by stating that complex bots could have shown up as humans in their model, "making even the 15% figure a conservative estimate."

[PDF] Millennial Carreers: 2020 vision | ProductMgmt | Scoop.it

By 2020 Millennials will make up over a third of the global workforce. That’s one reason so many reports about them exist. Some say they are disloyal, self-absorbed and lazy, while others claim they’re a generation of digital entrepreneurs and innovators. Some aim to dispel the myths others have created. Just type “Millennials are...” into a Google search  to see the stereotypes.

This is not just another Millennial report. This report presents new findings with fresh insights  from the perspective of both employers and employees. As world of work experts, we have nearly 30,000 employees advising 400,000 clients on hiring decisions and talent development every year. We find work for 3.4 million people—about half of whom are Millennials.

We carried out quantitative research across 25 countries surveying 19,000 Millennials, including 8,000 ManpowerGroup associate employees and more than 1,500 of our own hiring managers. We asked what they look for in a job, what development opportunities they seek and what would make them stay with an employer. We wanted to understand how different they are or aren’t from the rest of the workforce and from generations before them. We wanted to ensure that the sample represented all working Millennials; not just the top percent of tech-savvy earners, but also the graduates and non-graduates across all industries, income and education levels.

A psychologist shares the 10 qualities of the most authentic people | ProductMgmt | Scoop.it

In a society roided-out on bling, cash, ego, nakedness, and status, we have lost our authenticity.

We have lost morals and what it means to be ourselves. So many are caught up in following the crowd they have gotten lost in it. How can any type of true success come from being a follower?

Followers are lost to their authenticity and are chasers of "status" and "wealth." Followers are competitive, insecure, and consistently positioning and provoking to one-up each other. The stand-out successes we all admire are not in the crowd, they aren’t chasing cash, or being cool.

It doesn’t mean they don’t love nice things or indulge in them; it means they approach success from a different mindset.

20 Instagram Landing Page Examples That Seal the Conversion

20 Instagram Landing Page Examples That Seal the Conversion | ProductMgmt | Scoop.it

Instagram continues to move up the social media ladder. From a niche site for amateur photographers and a few filters to one of the top used image-sharing platforms, the advertising opportunities cannot be ignored by marketers looking to expand their audiences. And, as we continue to march toward an app-first online experience, mobile continues to outpace desktop in traffic.

Mobile-first sites such as Instagram will continue to reap the benefits, meaning your ads have greater potential — and create higher ROI if you combine ads with an Instagram landing page.

What is an Instagram landing page?

An Instagram landing page is a standalone web page that uses persuasive elements like testimonials, benefit-oriented copy, and videos to convince its visitors to convert on an offer. And, since Instagram is primarily used as an app on mobile devices, it is important to design a mobile-friendly page. Visitors land on the page after clicking a promotional link on Instagram....

Dr. Karen Dietz's curator insight, February 22, 2017 11:31 AM

In all my years of curating, I've looked at tons of articles promoting storytelling on social media. The problem? The posts are not really about storytelling. They are about photo sharing, 140-character opinions, posting links, and anything else you can think of. There's been mention of your collective tweets/posts/photos adding up to "your story" -- but that's a vague notion at best. None of this is really helpful.

Finally Alfred Lua from Buffer has written an intelligent piece that really does talk about storytelling -- yes, real stories -- and how to do it on different social media platforms. Yay!

Go grab these ideas and start having a field day sharing your stories.

10 Principles of Organizational Culture

10 Principles of Organizational Culture | ProductMgmt | Scoop.it

How often have you heard somebody — a new CEO, a journalist, a management consultant, a leadership guru, a fellow employee — talk about the urgent need to change the culture? They want to make it world-class. To dispense with all the nonsense and negativity that annoys employees and stops good intentions from growing into progress. To bring about an entirely different approach, starting immediately.

These culture critiques are as common as complaints about the weather — and about as effective. How frequently have you seen high-minded aspirations to “change the culture” actually manage to modify the way that people behave and the way in which they work? And how often have you seen noticeable long-term improvements?

How Artificial Intelligence Will Redefine Management

Many alarms have sounded on the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to upend the workforce, especially for easy-to-automate jobs. But managers at all levels will have to adapt to the world of smart machines. The fact is, artificial intelligence will soon be able to do the administrative tasks that consume much of managers’ time faster, better, and at a lower cost.

How can managers — from the front lines to the C-suite — thrive in the age of AI? To find out, we surveyed 1,770 managers from 14 countries and interviewed 37 executives in charge of digital transformation at their organizations. Using this data, we identified five practices that successful managers will need to master.

Understand The 'Generaction C' Consummer

Customers are more connected online than ever before. I agree that in order to grab their attention you need find out what they are looking for in a brand.

Morin shows the latest changes in consummer behavior and how to best meet their needs and desires.

Here's what caught my attention:

  • The trust meter has gone down over the last few years. Today people rely on review and recomendations -- especially from family and friends.

  • Content that is spread through social media has become the main source of information. These outlets are priority over traditional media.

  • With mobile platforms like Snapchat and Instagram consummers now want instant information. This has also created an emergence of niche bloggers to meet the demand.
