Sotheby’s Auction of ‘The Mummy’ Movie Poster Will Break Records

Sotheby’s Auction of ‘The Mummy’ Movie Poster Will Break Records | Pro Auction | Scoop.it

Sotheby’s is going ghoulish this October by auctioning off a super rare movie poster from the original run of Universal Picture’s first iteration of The Mummy (1932). The 86-year old one-sheet has been estimated to sell for between $1 million and $1.5 million by the auction’s close on Halloween.

And there are no bids as of publication, a purchase at any point within that range would make it the most expensive movie poster ever sold. A poster for the 1927 sci-fi epic Metropolis currently holds the world record (sold in 2005 for $690,000, Leonardo DiCaprio was the rumored buyer), but its cohort is dominated by Universal titles like Dracula, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, each of which are valued at nearly $500,000.

Webmaster's insight:

When a movie left theatres, its posters were thrown out and new ones printed if necessary for a re-release. #TheMummy

Tom Brown through to Great British Menu banquet

Tom Brown through to Great British Menu banquet | Pro Auction | Scoop.it

Tom Brown, chef-patron of Cornerstone in London’s Hackney Wick, will cook the main course at a banquet celebrating 70 years of the NHS at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, having beaten eight other finalists on BBC Two’s competition Great British Menu.

The chef drew level with Chris Harrod of the Whitebrook, Monmouthshire, and Craig Sherrington, Virginia House, Cumbria, on points – all scoring four 10s from the judges – but just pipped his rivals to the accolade.

Webmaster's insight:

Judges Matthew Fort, Andi Oliver, Oliver Peyton and guest judge Tom Lynch MBE were won over by Brown’s ‘Poor Man’s Goose’, a whole honey and sesame glazed duck inspired by a recipe he found in an NHS archive. #GreatBritishMenu #NHS

Actor George Clooney introduced Americans to Italy's Lake Como when he purchased Villa Oleandra in 2002, but he was late to the game when compared with the nearby Villa Passalacqua. Winston Churchill stayed here. So did Napoleon about a century beforehand. In fact it was his chief artist who completed many of the fresco ceilings that are still in beautiful condition throughout this 26,501-square-foot house.

Webmaster's insight:

Composer Vincenzo #Bellini stayed at the Villa for a few years and composed the operas "Norma" and "Sonnambula" during his time there. It is no surprise there is a room with great acoustics for live music.

World Mental Health Day: After many suicide attempts, ex-footballer marvels at miraculous survival

World Mental Health Day: After many suicide attempts, ex-footballer marvels at miraculous survival | Pro Auction | Scoop.it

Lancashire (CNN) It started with a feeling of isolation, of not wanting to engage with the world. He didn't want to answer emails, and hundreds of answerphone messages went unreturned.

Feeling as though the world was against him he didn't want to leave home. Gripped by anxiety and a fear of impending doom there was a sense everything was about to fall apart and that he was powerless to do anything about it.
Nonetheless, if his world was going to collapse, it was going to collapse on his own terms.
That was in late 2014, when former footballer Clarke Carlisle came very close to ending his life.
"How can I sit here in front of you and say that four years ago, I put myself in front of a 10-ton lorry, at 60 miles an hour and I didn't break a single bone in my body," Carlisle told CNN Sport at his home in Preston.
Carlisle had intentionally stepped out in front of a lorry on a road near York, just before Christmas. After several weeks in hospital, he managed to recover from the collision — remarkably unscathed. He describes his survival as a "miracle."

Cottingley Fairies hoax pictures expected to fetch £2,000 at auction | Art and design | The Guardian | Pro Auction | Scoop.it
Photographs of what is considered to be one of the greatest hoaxes of the 20th century are expected to fetch more than £2,000 when they are sold at auction.

The two images of the Cottingley Fairies were taken in July and September 1917 by 16-year-old Elsie Wright and her nine-year-old cousin Frances Griffiths, in the village of Cottingley, near Bingley in Yorkshire.

The two girls, like so many children then and now, believed in fairies and set out to prove their existence, little knowing that their practical joke would stir such controversy and fool such eminent figures as Sherlock Holmes’s creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
