Elton John at AIDS event: Pope Francis is my hero

Elton John at AIDS event: Pope Francis is my hero | Pride! News | Scoop.it
NEW YORK -- Elton John called Pope Francis "my hero" for his compassion and push to accept gays in the Catholic church, at his annual AIDS benefit.
Peach Ablah's insight:

This article really discusses the Catholic religion and its history for being anti-gay. What made it stand out to me was that Elton highlighted the positives and the people working hard to make homosexuals stand in a better light in relation to the church. This is huge because I believe religion is the biggest obstacle for the LGBTQ community. I did not know the pope was so accepting and was taking so many steps towards pushing acceptance in the church. This is so surprising to me because he must be losing a lot of followers by taking this widely controversial stance, but I think it is huge in the gay rights movement and I am very impressed with him. The fact so many celebrities auctioned off themselves for dates at the event was really inspiring. Its amazing to see people come together to support this movement, even in small ways.

Why Nick Jonas Is Proud To Play Gay

Why Nick Jonas Is Proud To Play Gay | Pride! News | Scoop.it
In an exclusive interview with BuzzFeed News, the former boy bander talks about playing a gay character on DirecTV’s Kingdom, why he leapt at the opportunity, and how far he’s willing to go for the...
Peach Ablah's insight:

Two aspects of this article really impress me. First, how the director set up the story line. Second, Nick Jonas and his personal comments about the role. The director chose to put this character in debatably the most difficult career for homosexuals. As a pro athlete, Nick's character experiences self-hate, denial, and depression about his feelings towards other men. As a pro-wrestler he fears what others in the ring competing against him in this very physical sport will think about his sexuality. There are not many television shows that choose to really highlight a characters sexuality when it is not heterosexual, so the director stepping out of normal boundaries to really pursue a story line about the struggles of not only a gay man but a gay man in this situation was bold and a real change in television. I think it will have positive effects on the audience by showing the emotional challenges and burdens society puts on many people who are experiencing this in their own lives. Recently two pro football athletes have come forward about heir sexuality and I think this show will help to increase the momentum. I also am impressed with Nick Jonas and his stance on playing this role. He talks about how honored he is to hold a role that can help the gay rights movement. He also says that he will do whatever he needs to in order to portray Nate in the most realistic light--even if that means being sexual with a man on screen. This shows a heterosexual actor willing to stand indifferent to sexuality and throw himself into his role as if it was a sexual scene with a women. It's a huge step in the business and a very impressive move by Nick.

Interview with Out Country Star Ty Herndon

Interview with Out Country Star Ty Herndon | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Interview with Out Country Star Ty Herndon - Out country star Ty Herndon says Nashville is 'moving forward at a great pace' Coming Out Gay
Peach Ablah's insight:

This interview is unique because of the sector of the celebrity community that Ty Herndon is a part of. Coming out is much easier for musicians in certain genres of music than others. This is because of the type of fan base each genre attracts. Country music stars attract a lot of very religious people and very old-fashioned groups. This is not all of their fans, of course, but very often this type of music and the lyrics a relatable to these groups of people. This makes coming out as a country music star especially hard. Ty is only the 3rd openly gay country music star. I like his quotations about the progression of Nashville. This music genre is becoming more accepting because the world is and country music is growing in popularity. The fact that Ty is seeing so much support from the country music community and his fans in general shows a huge progression and acceptance of this movement in a large sector of society that has generally been very anti-homosexual.

Former Miss Kentucky Advocates for LGBTQ Equality Issues | KET, Kentucky Educational Television | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Peach Ablah's insight:

I feel like this is another article that synthesizes with my curation project goal. Djuan Trent is the first known lesbian to compete nationally in the Miss America pageant. By taking the first step and making her sexuality public, she is setting the stage for this program to be more open to women who are not heterosexual. She makes a statement in this article saying that she admires Raven-Symone and Robin Roberts for both coming out about their own sexualities recently. This shows the domino effect that occurs as more and more celebrities begin coming out. It is broadcast over mainstream media and opens up the doors for more people to be comfortably honest about their own sexuality. This is the case with the Apple CEO and Miss Kentucky. They saw the growing prevalence  of gay support and honesty in the entertainment and music businesses and followed in synch with the trend. New boundaries are being pushed as pride spreads throughout mass media.

Alan Cumming: ‘ I never had any shame about being bisexual’

Alan Cumming: ‘ I never had any shame about being bisexual’ | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Alan Cumming has said he never felt there was "something wrong" with him when he realised he was bisexual.
Peach Ablah's insight:

I like this article because it follows up on and supports the one I posted regarding bisexual characters in television shows. Alan Cumming is bisexual and discusses how this sexuality is portrayed as a "phase" or "experimenting."  He backs up the idea that this is a huge area that needs support in the gay rights movement with his own life story and experiences. He was married to a woman and is now married to a man. I think it is huge to have celebrities begin stepping forward about being bisexual. Many have come out of the closet as being lesbian or gay, but bisexuality is not as prevalent. I believe discussions such as this one will begin to spread through mass media and help bisexuality take a firmer stance as a sexual orientation.

Where Are All the Bi Guys on TV?

Where Are All the Bi Guys on TV? | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Are shows being straight-washed, or is primetime just not ready to watch guys who are into girls and guys?
Peach Ablah's insight:

This article threw a new point into the spotlight. In all of the news headlines I've read, it has always been "gay" or "straight." People still have a hard time understanding and placing bisexuals, which is why there is not many bi characters prevalent in television. While fighting in the gay rights movement, the people standing in the middle are just as important. Many people often view bisexuals as "experimenting" or on the road to being gay but trying to fight it. It's sad that many do not classify this as an actual sexuality. As an example in this article it talks of how a television show in the UK had a male bisexual lead. When it crossed over to the United States, though, the character was portrayed as gay. I think depicting bisexual males well in television shows and not avoiding using them is a huge step in the right direction of raising awareness about bisexuality.

Harry Styles On Sleeping With A Man: 'Don't Knock It 'Til You've Tried It'

Harry Styles On Sleeping With A Man: 'Don't Knock It 'Til You've Tried It' | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Harry Styles Adds To Sexuality Rumours In New Interview

Via Kelly Riker
Peach Ablah's insight:

There's a lot to take in from this article. The first, for me, is how outrageous it is that Louis, one of the One Direction band members, blew up at a journalist for calling him "gay" when in reality she applauded him in the article for supporting LGBTQ rights. She had never even hinted at him being gay. The lash he received back was incredible with over 20k followers un-following him and the band losing many pre-orders of their new album. This shows the growing support for rights and how outraged people can get, even the most die-hard fans, when someone they idol does not support their values. Regarding Harry, I find it intriguing that this is how he would begin to come out. It makes me question if he is doing it for attention or if he truly is homosexual and thinks this is the best way.

Ex-‘Glee’ star Charice speaks out about her sexuality to Oprah: ‘My soul is like male’

Ex-‘Glee’ star Charice speaks out about her sexuality to Oprah: ‘My soul is like male’  | Pride! News | Scoop.it
A year after coming out as a lesbian, former "Glee" star Charice Pempengco speaks candidly about her sexuality in an upcoming interview with Oprah Winfrey, telling the TV mogul, "My soul is like male."
Peach Ablah's insight:

I really like Charice's approach to this interview. She started by explaining how early her feelings started and I think this brought attention to the fact that her sexuality is something she can't control. By saying that "her soul is like a male" she brought even more emphasis to the idea that she truly did not choose this but that she wouldn't change it about herself and she has accepted that it's a part of her. A lot of the debate surrounding the LGBTQ community is over if sexuality is a choice and she silently brought up this debate and issue to explain how she felt about it through her own story.

Peach Ablah's insight:

I thought this article was unique because it isn't about a star personally coming out, it's about even straight celebrities supporting the LGBTQ community. This is huge and shows that the general concern and idea of homosexuality is changing in pop culture and celebrities' minds. An American cultural phenomenon is to follow and mimic celebrities making this a big step in increasing acceptance of anyone who is lesbian, gay, bi, transgender, or queer.

Luke Evans Has Been Out for Years, But He's Finally Stopped Hiding | Pride! News | Scoop.it
The Dracula Untold star, who came out years ago, proves that coming out can be a long, rewarding process
Peach Ablah's insight:

The thing I like the most about this article is Luke Evans is a very very popular celebrity with huge movie roles. He's well known and so the fact he is stepping up and starting to feel more comfortable in his own shoes and in his sexuality is huge and shows that acceptance of people who are gay is beginning to grow even in the entertainment industry. The article points out that it hasn't always been this way and in earlier days being gay was a huge mark against you as an actor or actress while you were trying to find roles.

A local teen grabs Nickelodeon's attention.
Peach Ablah's insight:

This is a short article but I feel it holds a lot of importance and made me respect Nickelodeon. By giving the Halo Award to a teen who is in the LGBTQ community this station was raising awareness of the problems that plague many young people who are a part of this community. This station has viewers that are mainly younger (in late elementary school, middle school, or early high school) so this stance and move by the television station was a huge step in helping a new, young generation begin to change their own views and acceptance of people who have a different sexuality.

Peach Ablah's insight:

Connor Franta may not be in movies or a musician, but he is considered a celebrity because of his YouTube channel. With over three million followers and new videos every Monday, his average reach in a video is about two to four million. In his most recent video, Connor came out to the world about being gay and described his personal experience of trying to come to terms with it. I think that anyone truly wanting to understand the gay rights movement should watch this video because he carries the listeners through his entire life and feelings. He explains how scared he was when he had his first thoughts about being gay in seventh grade  all the way through to when he told his first friend and then finally told his parents. He explains laying in bed at night not being able to sleep and trying to say "I'm gay" into his bathroom mirror and not being able to get the words out. He also tells the stories of how he tried to self-conform himself and be heterosexual. The video is raw and unscripted and shows how much pain and emotion he has felt over his sexuality and how he has finally come to terms and wants the rest of the world to do the same. I think it is very powerful and mature, especially considering he is only 21 years old. It adds speed to the movement in another area of mainstream media.

Sam Smith Explains Why He Made His Sexuality Public For 'Out' Magazine: "My Aim Is To Tell People How Good It's Been For Me"

Sam Smith Explains Why He Made His Sexuality Public For 'Out' Magazine: "My Aim Is To Tell People How Good It's Been For Me" | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Sam Smith was named the breakout of the year by Out magazine. He spoke about his experience coming out and the reasons behind why he made his sexuality public. "My aim is to tell people how good it's been for me so that, hopefully, gay men or parents with gay children can look at my story and think, 'Wow, that's how it should be. That's what we can work towards.' That's been my whole motive — to not make it a talking point," Smith told them. "My music should be a talking point. My voice should be a talking point."
Peach Ablah's insight:

One quote by Sam Smith really stood out to me in this interview. "To make it equal, we need to act equal." This hit an area I haven't seen any celebrities really bring up. Making your sexuality a big deal makes it seem less normal. Sam urges that coming out should be something you do in a manner that is casual and comfortable. Live out your sexuality in a manner that all people should. Hole yourself to the same standard you hold other sexualities. Being homosexual doesn't give instant rights to more PDA. Actions need to be in the same spectrum and manner as those of heterosexuals because doing the exact opposite is part of what makes homosexuality seem to be such a big deal. It's about making it a part of you, not the overarching aspect of everything you are. If you treat it casual, it's more likely that others around you will as well and the fire will spread.

Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'I'm proud to be gay' | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Apple CEO Tim Cook publicly confirmed he is gay in an opinion piece published Thursday advocating for human rights and equality. In the essay published by Businessweek, Cook says he was inspired by Dr. Martin
Peach Ablah's insight:

Although this article sways a little away from the entertainment business, I feel that this news and article synthesizes with what I am approaching in my other scoops. The entertainment industry has seen increases in celebrities coming out and support for the gay community, but corporate American has not seen huge advances. By coming out of the closet Tim Cook was the first CEO of a Fortune 500 company to say that he was homosexual. This is a huge step for equality in the business world and in employment. I feel this effects the entertainment business as well because after this announcement many celebrities announced their support for Tim Cook via social media. It is creating a new sense of urgency to create equality in the entertainment world, the sports world, the business world, and in every day lives around the country and globe.

Michael Stipe: As I understand it queerness is the obvious acceptance that the world of sexuality, identity and love isn’t just black and white, or simple – it is every shade and gradation of the rainbow
Peach Ablah's insight:

Michael Stipe had a quote in this article that blew me away. Regarding queerness he said, "It is the final, completely obvious contemporary acceptance and understanding that this enormous world of beauty, sexuality, identity, lust, feeling, excitement, and love isn’t just black and white, or simple, at all – it is literally every shade and gradation of the rainbow." I thought this was unbelievable and beautifully put. It placed homosexuality in the perfect light with an amazing explanation. I love how it  explained why the rainbow is such a symbol for homosexuals.

Colin Farrell Makes Emotional Plea for Gay Rights in His Home Country | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Just because he has a reputation for being somewhat of a bad boy off-screen, doesn't mean Colin Farrell isn't up for the task of doing some good when it comes to a cause he believes in.

Via Kelly Riker
Peach Ablah's insight:

I think the amazing part about this article is Colin Farrell's insight as a 12 year old. He grew up directly along-side his brother, and he noticed at that young of an age that his brother was different. This was before his brother even realized it himself. Even at that age Colin was accepting. He didn't look at it as abnormal, just a casual difference like one would compare hair color or height. It's very interesting to see the perspective of a sibling who watched it all from the very beginning and to see his huge support for his brother and the movement as a whole.

Tim Gunn Tells Story of Struggle Early in Life with Sexuality - JD Journal | Pride! News | Scoop.it
Tim Gunn, one of the judges on "Project Runway," tells the story of his struggle with sexuality early in life in the video embedded in this post.
Peach Ablah's insight:

This interview is unbelievable because it truly brings out the pain and struggles that LGBTQ youth and young adults experience and especially experienced in the past. It sheds light on how things are getting easier because of the growing acceptance, but that they still aren't where they need to be. One horribly shocking part to me is where Tim Gunn describes that back in his teenage years homosexuality was considered a disease that people were actually treated for. This wasn't that long ago. Although steps and progress have been made so quickly in a short amount of time, it's horrifying to me that this was ever the view and idea in peoples' minds. I think it's important people are educated on how it used to be viewed because it will help generate even more awareness to the problem.

How I Met Your Mother actor Neil Patrick Harris has revealed that it was a friendly kiss from Burt Reynolds that cemented the realisation that he was gay.

Peach Ablah's insight:

The main impression I came away from this article with is the honesty Neil Patrick Harris now uses to describe his journey and sexuality. He's comfortable even discussing the beginning of it all, with a very straight actor, which is something most actors and actresses would never admit to. By writing an autobiography he is throwing his personal life and troubles out into the world for everyone to see and it is a bold move that shows the growing acceptance by people in the industry and the world in general made it easier for him to come out of his shell and be willing to put everything on the line. The risk was less than it would have been 10 years ago.

I chose this article because it brings up religion and religion is one of the main contributors to hatred and discrimination against the LBGTQ community. I had never heard of Jennifer Knapp before this article, but I am very impressed with her perseverance and her attitude towards herself. Being a Christian singer, coming out about her sexuality had to be one of the hardest moments of her life. She knew she could lose her fans and potentially even her career. I think she represents and shows that you can be very religious and still have a different sexuality and that she follows God and knows he loves her even though she is gay. It really is an amazing, unique article and story.
