Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, June 6, 2014 11:58 AM

Learning and teaching are about action therefore verbs are the appropriate words to bring nouns to life i.e. curriculum.

Great article on the research behind the discovery of the 5 levels of learning. No matter where you fall on the scale you can learn to learn better. This is good information for both instructors and students.

Seth's Blog: In search of familiarity

Seth's Blog: In search of familiarity | Click to Learn | Scoop.it

"Most people have been trained to come to work in search of familiarity and competence. To work with familiar people, doing familiar tasks, getting familiar feedback from a familiar boss."

"If you want to build an organisation that thrives in change (and on change), hire and train people to do the paradoxical: To discover that the unfamiliar is the comfortable familiar they seek."

David Swaddle's insight:
Seth hits the nail on the head by pointing out that most people come to work to do the familiar.

If L&D wants to change, then it needs to employ people who thrive on change, rather than people who want to do the same as yesterday.

Reducing Cognitive Overload For A Better User Experience – Smashing Magazine

Reducing Cognitive Overload For A Better User Experience – Smashing Magazine | Click to Learn | Scoop.it
The best user experience is the one the user doesn’t notice. It appears smooth and simple on the surface, but hundreds of crucial design decisions have been made to guide, entertain and prevent trouble. If the user experience design does what it’s supposed to do, the user won’t notice any of the work that went into it. The less users have to think about the interface or design, the more they can focus on accomplishing their goal on your website. Your job as a designer is to give them a straight path to their goal by clearing out the obstacles beforehand.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of headlines. A good headline can entice and engage your audience to click, to read, and to share your content. David Swaddle's insight:
The ‘Dunning-Kruger effect’ is one of the biggest issues we face when trying to design self-serve learning.

Those who are incompetent tend to over-estimate their skills, and therefore consider that they don't need to improve their skills.

Those who are over-performers often feel the most self-doubt and tend to engage more when they're the people who need the resources least.

As an aside...it's a really well written article that demonstrates that weaves a story around the facts to help you remember it. Lemon juice ;)
