What if the State of the Union were an Apple keynote?

What if the State of the Union were an Apple keynote? | Present like a Rockstar | Scoop.it

For all the buildup, tonight's State of the Union speech will be a lot like all the others: "The state of our union is strong," we're moving forward, here are some exceptional Americans that I'm going to highlight for my political benefit. The SOTU speech, in other words, is strikingly similar to another fixture in public speaking: The technology keynote.

SOPRESO's insight:

Just consider the possibility of Barack Obama addressing the highly regarded House to the sounds of Jay-Z while wearing dad jeans instead of a suit delivering his annual State of the Union speech with the flashy pictures about NASA’s newest Mars Rover. Would be nice, wouldn’t it? Even if it is just an idea to play with, Brian Fung has done a great job doing so. All the details are right, all the elements are in place. Obama could handle the SOTU speech as a CEO who’s performing a product launch in front of a bunch of Silicon Valley bloggers. Why not? You can find out how by taking a short glance into Fung’s outstandingly upbeat article on the topic

The 'Jobs' actor's stirring acceptance speech at the Teen Choice Awards is earning him considerable respect among speechwriters.
SOPRESO's insight:

My favorite sentence is 'Build your own life, don't live one...' that's quite a good advice for teenagers but also for everyone!

And even if a lot of people think that this speech was a promotion for the "Jobs "movie, Ashton did it really well and he hasn't mentioned the film during the first 4 minutes of his 5 minute speech...

Well done, I love it and a lot to learn from Ashton!

Weekend Reading: An Introvert’s Guide to Public Speaking | Present like a Rockstar | Scoop.it
SOPRESO's insight:

What are your chances as a self-proclaimed introvert to deliver a speech to remember? You would be shocked to learn that they are pretty up high. In fact, just as high as anyone else’s can be. The only thing you need to keep in mind is the approach: here, you can read about three examples worth considering. You can either lean on knowledge, according to Matt Haughey’s tips, or vouch for techniques like “talk with your tongue out” right before stepping on stage. But you can always resort to Jonathon Coleman’s playbook for introverts: hack yourself in order to leverage your personality traits as assets. In case you're all too familiar with being an introvert check out what they have to say on the topic. Worth reading!

The Art and Skill of Effective Public Speaking

The Art and Skill of Effective Public Speaking | Present like a Rockstar | Scoop.it
Strong communications skills are essential in today’s competitive work environment. Many students begin developing their presentation abilities as early as the preschool show-and-tell circle, and continue to hone their public speaking prowess with each passing year. In this video, KWHS’s Katlyn Grasso speaks with Buck Benedict, a communications expert who urges his students to speak about who they are and what they are passionate about.
SOPRESO's insight:

If you’re up against a task that involves speaking in front of others and about to freak out then you’ll find this 14-minute long video much assuring and eventually soothing. A high school reporter managed to pick the brain of communications specialist Arthur “Buck” Benedict and tapped into his vast knowledge on the qualities of an effective public speaker. You can either skim through the transcript or take the time to watch the video, which is worth a shot, believe me: his lighthearted demeanor blows away all the pent up frustration from having to perform in front of others. Check out what he has to say and keep in mind his number one rule: find confidence, the rest will come naturally.

SOPRESO's insight:

If you are up for a non-conventional article about Martin Luther King and his devoted work of a lifetime then check out this stunning piece of writing. It is now an official American federal holiday marking the birthday of an incredible leader. Many would refer to him as a Black Leader but this is just not entirely true. He has been and still is an influential leading figure whose impact cannot be summarized and narrowed down to a civil movement activist or the advocate of “Black America”. The article by John Hope Bryant depicts this complex and compelling figure prudently and with a deep sense of honor and gratitude.

SOPRESO's insight:

Being funny is key to crack an awful lot of situations. In a bar, among colleagues, with fellow students or with a non-lenient teacher that needs to loosen up and be melt by your efforts. Though in every situation there is a specific atmosphere that you need to read before using humor as a successful icebreaker. You cannot fall out of context just because you are stuck with the same old joke since 8th grade. Read your audience, adapt your strategy and never forget about the power of delivering a fitting punchline to get closer to your audience. Make a joke, send your message deeper, engage them differently but always be aware of the context you’re weighing into.

Now or never to evaluate them: it’s Golden Globes time! You can have a Matthew McConaughey-style rhyme-infested brilliant little pep-talk with mother and wife quotations, you can have a bit tipsy Cate Blanchett, a nervously giggling Jennifer Lawrence with a shaky voice, Gravity’s Alfonso Cuarón with his self-allotted thick accent as he calls it, Leonardo DiCaprio with the all-so-common opening line “Wow, this is an incredible, incredible honour”. Surviving Anxiety

Surviving Anxiety | Present like a Rockstar | Scoop.it

"Yes, I know. My method of dealing with my public-speaking anxiety is not healthy. It’s dangerous. But it works. "

SOPRESO's insight:

If you would like to read an honest to the bone confession about anxiety and how it can alter one’s life then this is the one to go with.

Scott Stossel’s essay from his new book ‘My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind’ draws up a well-detailed and still humorous picture about someone whose everyday life is complicated to the fullest because of the crippling effect of anxiety. So then there’s the question: what’s the way out? If any. Cognitive-behavioral therapy, drugs and pills or the occasional quaff of vodka, maybe even electroshock therapy? Or just go with good old talk therapy? Or should we just minimize the effects to keep the anxiety at bay given that it can be a fuel for productivity and greatness? Stossel’s essay is something everyone with anxiety issues would need to read. There are others out there with the same problem and maybe there’s the cure as well, you just need to find your own way through the haze.

How to master the art of public speaking

How to master the art of public speaking | Present like a Rockstar | Scoop.it

Public speaking is one of those activities that can get a person’s palms sweaty at just the mention of the words. With practice it’s said to get easier, but if you have a big meeting or job interview coming up here are a few things you can do to make your next presentation a little less stressful. Research your topic.

There’s nothing more nerve wracking than going into a room to speak on a topic you know little or nothing about. Save yourself the anxiety attack and prepare ahead so you know little or nothing about.

It is more than a perfect tip to ease up your audience like Chris Rock would do. But what if you’re not as hysterically funny and easy-going like him? No problem, here are some tips and advice for the rest of us struggling with public speaking on how to deliver a presentation to remember. Just to give you a hint on the column, here are the most important tricks that you will find absolutely useful: research your topic thoroughly, make it visual, keep it lighthearted, interact with your audience, be yourself and, of course, dress to impress! Camera operator, director, entrepreneur and producer with world-class special effects and an exquisite taste in action movies. Just think of the Transformers film series, Pearl Harbor or, for the sake of the not-too-faint hearted cinema geeks, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th. Ladies and gents, this is all Michael Bay. Insanely rich and successful plus, just to top the list and make his critics just a tad more jealous, if that is even humanly possible, a visionary artist for good. What went wrong, then? How Lincoln Became America's Greatest Leader | Present like a Rockstar | Scoop.it
It wasn't Abraham Lincoln's strengths but the self-discipline with which he used those strengths for the right purpose.
SOPRESO's insight:

Lincoln and his signature skill: the mastery of language. We cannot do anything else but to admire and, hopefully, copy him just to get a fraction of his techniques. Way before launching a career as a lawyer and then a politician later on he would step onto a stomp in front of friends to practice public speaking, engage in storytelling contests and study Shakespeare diligently in order to improve himself. A list to impress and to follow. Criticism, mockery or even provocation weren’t alien to him while destroying opponents of any kind only by wielding his most powerful weapon: words. Do you have what it takes to sculpt your character just as ardently as he did? Are you aware of your strengths and willing to take them to the next level and forge a weapon to get ahead?
