Understanding transnational political involvement among Senegalese migrants: The role of acculturation preferences and perceived discrimination

Understanding transnational political involvement among Senegalese migrants: The role of acculturation preferences and perceived discrimination | Migration CH : Papers, reports, articles | Scoop.it

In political debates, migrants’ political involvement in their countries of origin and successful adaptation to receiving countries are often portrayed as incompatible. We address this concern by examining the links between acculturation preferences, perceived discrimination, and migrants’ transnational political involvement in their country of origin. In line with collective action research, a cross-sectional questionnaire study (N = 84) among Senegalese migrants in Paris (France) and Geneva (Switzerland) examined three pathways to transnational political involvement (motivations and actual behaviour).

Tamil diaspora and the political spaces of second-generation activism in Switzerland - HESS - 2014 - Global Networks - Wiley Online Library | Migration CH : Papers, reports, articles | Scoop.it

In this article, we study the emergence of the political spaces of activism of second-generation Swiss Tamils resulting from a critical event – the suffering of Tamils during and after the final battle in early 2009 of a civil war in northern Sri Lanka that had lasted for decades. We contend that we can explain the geographies of newly emerging second-generation activism committed to achieving Tamil Eelam through two factors. These are first, this generation's multiple senses of belonging both to Switzerland and to the Tamil ‘nation’ and, second, the way a specific politics of affect remoulded second-generation identities because the pain of witnessing the brutality of war and suffering of Tamils occurred concurrently with a perceived lack of interest from their ‘new home’ (Switzerland). The combination of these factors made them want to acknowledge their Tamil ‘roots’ and encouraged them to become politically active. Consequently, these second-generation activists primarily sought to engage with their host society – to awaken it from its indifference to the suffering of Tamils and from its passivity in taking action on an international level. We thereby witness the emerging of a new type of Tamil activism in Switzerland, which is firmly located in and bound to the host country.

On Bricoleurs and Workers: Young Second-generation Men in Switzerland

On Bricoleurs and Workers: Young Second-generation Men in Switzerland | Migration CH : Papers, reports, articles | Scoop.it
(2014). On Bricoleurs and Workers: Young Second-generation Men in Switzerland. Journal of Intercultural Studies: Vol. 35, No. 4, pp. 403-420. doi: 10.1080/07256868.2014.913012

The ability to switch easily between different cultures and to bridge different contexts seems to fit second-generation migrants perfectly for the present globalised age. By mixing and synthesising pre-existing elements they appear to be bricoleurs with the notion of impurity and openness. This paper focuses on processes of hybridity and multiple belonging and considers their complexity by taking a biographical view. It analyses two case studies of young Hindu and Muslim men in Switzerland and argues that dealing with different kinds of memberships may sometimes reflect something playful, but can likewise be connected with the notion of a worker, reflecting something rather harmful and stressful. Moreover, the case of these young Hindu and Muslim men illustrates the complexity of power relations.
