The new faces of the homeless: single moms, kids face hardships. The stalled economy is forcing more families out onto the streets.

Marcus's insight:

I felt that they stayed resilient throughout even though they were homeless and six months after, they found a suitable place for them to stay with the help of the Berks Coalition to End Homelessness. I feel that there are a lot of people willing to help the homeless but the homeless just does not dare to ask them for help as they are embarrassed and they want to put up a strong front. There are also a lot of young mothers out there with kids and have no place to stay with no money, even though they try their best to bring home food for their kids to eat it will never be enough for them.

Caregivers Help Homeless Families Regain Independence

One of the first lines of defense in preventing homelessness is often family members who often open their homes to their relatives experiencing homelessness, providing them a temporary, safe place to stay.

Marcus's insight:

I think that it is very helpful of the caregivers to help the homeless people, as the children will have a sense of belonging, as they feel like they do not belong here because they are homeless. The children will also feel insecure,I think that more people should go and help the homeless families find a place to stay so that they would feel safe and secure with a place to stay. The caregivers also motivated them to be strong and not give up.

I can see that these caregivers helped the homeless families that lost their apartment due to financial strain by letting those people stay at their house,to let them have a sense of belonging, but it strains the caregivers' resources, space and privacy. I think that more people should lend a helping hand to those people by letting them have a place to live in, a more conducive environment for them and those people in poverty will be grateful to them as they have a safe place to stay temporarily. I wonder why people refuse to donate to the charity although the problem of poverty is still rising daily and more and more people are being homeless because they are unable to pay the expenses as they are being unemployed.

Leong Lwl's curator insight, January 24, 2014 10:58 PM

After i read this article i notice that we all are counted as lucky one .There is up to thousands of children in a country who is homeless. The reason behind it is their parent lose their house due to finiancial strain. As the result there is very high unemployment among teenagers seeking work and healthcare is going to become unmanageable. Due to the continued high unemployment rate, and the compounding underemployment rate, families are remaining homeless for longer periods of time. Wages and work hours are not enough for families to obtain and maintain quality, safe housing but there is still caregivers came to give them a helping hand by :

Help them experience a sense of stability and belonging within their environment and family.Make certain children understand rules and expectations so that they can adjust and comply instead of fearing that they may do something wrong to create more problems for the family. It is important for the host family to reassure children that they have a safe, permanent place to come back to, that they are welcome and a part of things.Allow children to be children — there is a difference between informing a child of circumstances and expectations versus burdening them with adult decisions and responsibilities.Encourage children to play, have fun, and develop friends and support systems through school, after school programs or faith-based organizations.Encourage children to develop support systems by informing schools, teachers and youth leaders of what the family is experiencing.

So i think that there is hope for all the needy families facing poverty

Valerie Ho's curator insight, February 24, 2014 3:20 AM

I can see that there is hope for the people that live in poverty. The caregivers are like the tickets to get out the hell life. I think that the caregivers must have thought twice before deciding whether ti sign up for this job. I wonder what will the people think ? Are they happy of the caregivers?

Program to tutor homeless kids grows

“Our whole mission is breaking the cycle of homelessness through education, which is done by stability with the same volunteers, when they’re living in a sense of turmoil and chaos’’

Via NHFS, Inc.
Marcus's insight:

I think that the tutors are very kind to help the homelesss children so that they can break the cycle of homelessness through their education. This will help them in the future when they have kids so that their kids will not have to go through the same suffering that they did when they were kids. The tutors also helped them with their homework and projects other than tutoring them, they also help them with their basics as they did not learn them , I can tell from this that they are very serious in what they do and they really want to help these kids grow up to break the cycle of homelessness.
