Teo J-lyn's curator insight, July 3, 2013 3:23 AM

I can see that when people are awlays being exposed to negative thoughts and information, they tend to make bad choices due to their negative thoughts, affecting the way he or she lead their life. This cause people to feel demoralised , which will also affect the way they think. Thus, it is important to think positive, and see the brighter side of life. This will allow people to strive towards their goal, and have their desired outcome. I think attitude plays a important role in the way we think. i wonder why do people not think the positive side of life.

Jaslyn Si Jia's curator insight, July 4, 2013 5:59 AM

After reading this article, I realized that positive attitude is needed to determine the life we're living in and also the possibilities that we can achieve. Many people may be affected in their life due to the negative thoughts and attitude that they have, if they had positive attitude in all the things they do, they would live a better life and discover things that they might have never discovered before. These positive attitude and thoughts leads to finding even more possibilities and lead us to the right path onto our future.

Coven Chong Weng's curator insight, July 5, 2013 7:09 AM

From this article, i realise that with the right attitude, we can come up with all different kind of outcome in some situations. If your attitude is positive for everything, everything might just turn out the way that you want it. However if you have a negative attitude, things will not go the way you want it to and it might get even worse. Thus, i wonder why some people dont think with a positive attitude.

The picture depicts the poor sleeping on the pavement. Living in poverty allows one to face many challenges and difficulties in life. The article tells us the interconnection between poverty and mental illness. Living in poverty for a long period of time can cause health and mental issues too. You will stress out and worry about many problems regarding the lack of money, and not eating enough nutritional food which cost more than processed food. Mental health intervention programs are setup to alleviate people’s difficulties and improve their mental state. We should support these programs and help others to recover from poverty and mental illness by giving our support. The government should also do their part to look after the citizens and prevent poverty.

crystal chin jing's curator insight, February 3, 2013 7:16 AM

Healthcare is one such essential need a government provides for its citizen. Health care is a public good which governments have to provide for the people, given the limited resources and competing need of the country. However in less developed countries, people do not have adequate basic health care facilities. One example is India, where diarrheal disease, lower respiratory infection, neonatal disorder, measles, HIV and tetanus are common. Even though the government tries to improve the situation, there are still insufficient doctors, nurses, clinic and medicine to meet the need of the people. I feel sympathizes for the people in India. Many lives were taken away due to insufficient healthcare facilities. I am concerned about the feeling of the people when their loves one was grievously taken away.  I feel very fortunate and lucky to live in Singapore where the government is better able to provide good quality health care for the citizen.

's curator insight

After reading this article, I'm shocked to find out that poverty has such a great impact on mental illness. When people become jobless or fall ill and recieve government grants, they become stressed about money and the fact that even the social workers and others often encourage a person to remain “disabled” or in poverty to continue receiving the full benefitsof being jobless and feeding of the government's money. The financial programs also often discourage work or even looking for work, and punish the jobless financially because as soon as they  find work as the government grant will be cut off suddenly, leaving them with very little money and low income in most cases contributing to more people getting mental illnesses such as depression as the cannot handle stressful thought of not having money to support themselves. In this propective, I feel that the government is not thinking enough about it's people and that they should have a 'weaning' period for the people who were previously financially assistaed which may motivate more people to find jobs as thier income would not be cut off suddenly. This shows us the huge impact poverty has on mental health.

I feel that the Government ministers are very irresposible. As the head of the country, the government ministers should try their best to meet the people's needs instead of blaming it on the rising price. Before i read this article, i thought that being in the 'seventh richest economy in the world' meant that everyone living the country are rich and that they could afford alot more things than us. However i realise that, actually even people living in those countries also have problems like these. I feel that it was very kind and generous of the volunteers from the charity and community groups to provide food for those who cannot afford. Why is food poverty happening in developed countries? If this continues, I think that the world economy will fall apart.

Jovan Chua's curator insight, February 4, 2013 8:42 AM

Being the leaders of a developed country where something like this should not happen, the ministers should not be more irresponible as they are the people who are tasked to run their country properly. One of the reasos fr this problem may be that governent ministers, being very well off may never have experienced poverty before and they may not think much of it.

Bharath Gessian's curator insight, February 4, 2013 8:54 AM

Britain are the seventh richest colony and i thought there would be no poor people but I was shocked by this scoop when i was reading it the first time. Its way worse than what i thought and hopefullythere are charities, community group and people who still care for all these pathetic people. The people who worked for the goverment were shocked, dissapointed and disgusted. Though the goverment did not say this, but it shows that the country does not have a right leader who does his job right and lead the country in the right way. I would really like to thank the charity and community for their help. Why are there poverty in developed and rich countries? What will happen to the world economy if this continues?

From this article,I have realize the impact of not having access to proper drinking water, this article has taught me the importance of water. Womens living in the less developed country have to travel hours in order to get access to water and the worst thing is the water is not even clean. In our more developed country where people have access to clean water are taking the water for granted, not knowing people in less developed country have to travel for hours just to get dirty water.

After seeing the article, we should realise how fortunate we are when we have a tap with an unlimited supply of water thanks to our goverment, while we look at these people. They travel miles to get water and some even drink dirty water, this shows us that help must be given to these people as they are suffering although they actually can have clean water, its just that we are not acting to help them. Will the world help them, or would they just simply say ''its not my problem'' , this will depend of you, people could be saved if you just take it to concern and help out

Mind-controlled devices reveal future possibilities

Mind-controlled devices reveal future possibilities | Poverty Assignment (Wong Qi Ming) | Scoop.it

Bin He, Ph.D., leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human subjects to control the flight of small, remote-controlled helicopters using only their minds. The researchers believe this technology has the potential to restore mobility and independence to individuals suffering from neuromuscular disorders and paralysis, and could enhance the natural motor functions of pilots, surgeons and ordinary citizens.

I could refer form the article above that there are various types of way to improve our daily life using the capabilities of technology. It mention about this group of scientists and engineers working on a experiment that allows humans to control certain type of device by just using their minds without the movement of their physical body. By the end of this article , I hope that this invention could be used in the future to help those who are physically incapable to do something that they always wanted to.
Shameerza's curator insight, June 28, 2013 6:32 AM

From this article, i can see that Bin He, Ph.D, leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human to control it by mind. I think that this invention is really fascinating and useful. By planting electrodes in the brain, by a single thought, it allows the beholder to control and move things. I wonder if this is powerful enough to lift heavy objects. In conclusion, this great invention, may lead into a greater and improved human technology in which will give us the power to levitate, move and control objects with only the power of a thought without using strength.

Tan Wenjia Polar Beary's curator insight, June 29, 2013 5:42 AM

Using see think wonder. The articles talkes about how Bin He ph D, and his teams of scientisits and engineers work on the device that allows human subjects to control the flight of small, remote-controlled helicopters using only their mind. This shows that we can turn our imaginations into possibilities. I feel that this article can influence younger generation to turn their imaginations into reality.

Benjamin Yap Kian Hwee's comment, February 4, 2013 7:51 AM
After reading this article, I see that the people are not able to pay for electricity. The government is helping them by building solar panels to collect energy from the sun. This will benefit many people, for example the children can study even after the sunset and the adults can use electrical appliances to cook food instead of using fire. Now the people can use the computer and connect to the outside world and let people know about what is poverty.
Wong Jia Ler's curator insight, February 4, 2013 9:08 AM

This method is viable, it will help many obtain cooked food, but. is this method viable in a way in cost effectiveness if we wanted to do this in a world wide scale to help everyone? I do not think so, but, it is still good as this project had helped many, thousands, or maybe millions. lives are saved, but maybe we could look for a new method to help them which is cost effective and needed by people affected by poverty.

Praveent Thamil Mani's curator insight, January 20, 2014 7:21 AM

Support offered by government and non-government agencies to people to come out of the poverty line.

I see that a report by the UN Development Programme confirms that there can be no development without energy, and that poverty cannot be addressed sustainably without paying due attention to energy services.  The poor need energy to get out of poverty, but energy alone is not enough. The poor need support to generate income so that energy becomes affordable, which in turn will improve household living standards. Nearly half the world’s population lacks reliable access to modern energy services. I hope that this process speeds up and the poverty in the world is decreased.

well through this article, people have been educated. they might have been taught of the problem of poverty. thus they might be able to play a role in helping the problem. another thing is that through education, they are able to find jobs more easily. they will also be able to feed their own family. so the more people get jobs, the lesser people will turn to poverty. thus through education, the problem of poverty might just be lessen down!

Merci Goh's curator insight, February 4, 2013 8:10 AM

Using the See Think Wonder routine. From this Acticle I can see the Education is link to Poverty. Without Education we will not have the knowledge and without education knowledge we will not have jobs to help us earn money to make a living. People who does not have educations will not have jobs and will not have earning which leads to poverty. Families without Education will not be able to take care of thier children and they will get sick and may lead to death. I wonder why people don't feel thankful for having education, other people who wants education does not even get to have.

Mina Macy Markovic's curator insight, February 24, 2014 5:12 PM

In today's world, a college degree is something that is very important to have in order to have an good and stabled employment. The challenge for the people in poverty is the high expenses for college. This is increasingly beyond the reach for millions of youths and their families in not just to people who are in poverty but to even families who are in middle class economically. I think that this article is interesting as it tells us the problem with the educational system in our current generation, and also telling us the good solution to giving students from a low income family a chance to prove their worth and have a bright future. All this could start in high school by preparing them the best they can in order for the students to attend college.
