[US] What comes after a Ph.D.? Check out the data | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

Last month’s Survey of Earned Doctorates report highlights job commitment trends and salaries for recent graduates.

Ph.D. students may feel like it’s taking an extraordinarily long time to reach the day they submit their theses and move forward with their careers. The feeling is not unfounded: According to the most recent data from the National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED), those who received their degrees in science and engineering between July 2014 and June 2015 on average spent 5.2 to 6 years in their doctoral programs. Engineering students were the quickest, and training in psychology and the social sciences took the longest. (...) - Science, by Maggie Kuo, July 24, 2017

How the Academic Job Market Sets PhDs up for Failure in a Non-Faculty Job Search.

How the Academic Job Market Sets PhDs up for Failure in a Non-Faculty Job Search. | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

Every week, I visit with perspective clients who are interested in coaching or joining the Beyond the Professoriate community platform. One of my standard questions during an intake calls is: tell me about your current job search strategy. What I usually hear is that the PhD is looking at job ads and sending out resumes and cover letters. Some know they should be networking, but they don't understand how essential this is to their job search strategy. Part of this, I think, has to do with how the tenure track job search is structured – and how it sets PhDs up for failure when they start their post-academic job search. (...) - LinkedIn Pulse, by L. What can I do with my Ph.D. and how do I get started? Those are the questions that most often lead Ph.D. students from the humanities and social sciences to our advising offices. Against Letters of Recommendation for Academic Jobs (updated)

Against Letters of Recommendation for Academic Jobs (updated) | Poursuite de carrière des docteurs - PhDs career | Scoop.it

“The practice of soliciting letters of recommendation for academic positions is both foolish and immoral.” So begins a post by University of Colorado philosophy professor Michael Huemer at What’s Wrong?  Part of the problem, he says, stems from a tension in the role of the letter writer: The theory behind this practice is that the committee doesn’t have time to familiarize itself with the work of all the hundreds of candidates who are applying, so they rely on an outside person who is already familiar with that work. Thus, the letter writer is, in theory, acting as the agent of the committee, with the task of helping the committee select the best person. In reality, most letter writers conceive themselves as agents of the candidate, with the task of helping their friend (the candidate) get the position that the friend wants.
