Danbury woos Pitney Bowes' Headquarters | CTPost.com

Danbury woos Pitney Bowes' Headquarters | CTPost.com | Postal | Scoop.it

Last year, when Pitney Bowes unveiled its Global Technology Center off Executive Drive, Mayor Mark Boughton proclaimed this city is the center of the company's universe.

Now he has a chance to make that a reality.

Last Wednesday, the worldwide postal and digital commerce giant announced it had sold its Stamford headquarters, potentially cutting its ties to its hometown of roughly a century. First-year president and CEO Marc Lautenbach said the company needs a headquarters that is "more efficient, modern and open."

The 550 employees at the Stamford facility will be relocated early next year to either the company's Shelton facility or its technology center in Danbury, company officials said. Meanwhile, Pitney Bowes is searching for the new home -- in Danbury, Stamford, elsewhere in Fairfield County or in neighboring Westchester County.

On Friday, Boughton jumped out of the box, hoping to lure the company north.

"Danbury is certainly an attractive location for them and we have as good a shot as anyone else," the mayor said, adding that the city is preparing proposals. "I know they have some deep roots in Stamford, but we'll do whatever we can to convince them to come to Danbury."

Boughton and economic development director Bruce Tuomala, who are facing potentially stiff competition from across the region, said the company has already made significant investments here, having recently completed a multimillion-dollar upgrade and renovation of its Danbury facility.

Boughton said Danbury's high quality of life, low crime rate and easy access to transportation routes, including Metro-North and Interstate 84, could also work in the city's favor when trying to court the company.

Best way to send your digital files to the cloud? The postal service. | GigaOM Tech News

Best way to send your digital files to the cloud? The postal service. | GigaOM Tech News | Postal | Scoop.it

Do we have too much digital junk cluttering up our hard drives, or are our average upload speeds of 5.29 Mbps in the U.S. just too slow? That’s the question the launch of iDrive’s Digital Express service raises.

For $60, iDrive sends you a terabyte drive to load up with your stuff and ship back to its cloud. They encrypt the data, as well, in case it gets lost in the mail.

The service is similar to one that Amazon Web Services launched in 2009 that allowed corporate customers to upload data, but you’d think that four years later we’d have better upload speeds. Or that consumers wouldn’t have a terabyte of stuff on their home servers. But iDrive says customers needed it. So they built it.

As my colleague Mathew Ingram experienced in 2011 when he was loading files to the cloud, we do have a bunch of stuff on our drives and the wrong settings can lead to some massive data movement. Plus, at the average speed, uploading a terabyte would take a little less than 19 days. Of course, a terabyte equals roughly 111 DVDs so that’s an awful lot of seasons of Dexter. Personally, I’d rather just stream it when I need it.
