Mayor, residents reluctantly comply with rule banning English in bulletin

ShengWei Luvs's insight:

I can see that this article states that language ruling disrupts a tradition of harmony in Sainte-Agathe. The city announced that it would be the last bulletin to feature English in that city. The city, complying with directives from the Office, advised residents that news in english would have to go on.I think that it is quite stupid as language is just a small thing, how could it disrupts a tradition of harmony. I wonder why would language disrupts harmony while other coutries are having racial problems.

The city, complying with directives advised the residents that English news would have to go. i think that this article is related to conflict and harmony in multi ethinic societies as english is used in most of the countries to communicate with people from different countries to communicate with one another. I wonder what will others think when they see the article.

ShengWei Luvs's insight:

I can see that racism, which is a prejudice, is more or less a "white-man's invention". However, there are also a large amount of indians also think the same way that the "white" people are. They are very particular of who they are with, like not wanting to live next to a neighbour of a different race. It is rather astonishing that Indians have this kind of view too. I think that prejudice is something that is hard to change as it is one's impression of something that are different to them, depending on how one is brought up. I wonder what other kinds of prejudice exists in this world and how does it affect other people and if there is a cycle.

India is the world's second-most racist country after Jordan. I think that people should be more accepting towards other races, their languages as well as their religion and not be prejudice. It do not matter what colour we are, as we are all humans, and have blood flowing in us. I wonder if racism will continue and is the government going to do anything about it . Racism had also become a serious issue.

Seamus Ong's curator insight, July 5, 2013 8:55 AM

This is my insight using the see-think-wonder routine. From this article I can see that people are being judged by the colour of their skin, accent and other stuff. I see that most races are being judged based on what the minority from the race does like how some act or talk in public and based on that, other racial groups are under the impression that all people of that certain race is like that and they thus sterotype or generalise everyone belonging to that race. this article makes me think that racism is a big problem and one of the main causes of conflict in multienthnic societies like racial riots. I wonder if racism will ever stop.

Asha Begum's curator insight, July 6, 2016 5:20 AM

Treating the Indians in this way is not right. White men should change their perception of Indian people. Racism should stop because it is not fair to be prejudiced.

ShengWei Luvs's insight:

I can see that this guy, Pedro Virgil, 40 who is a SAVUSAVU-born has achieved to be a international photographer. He come from a poor family and his formative years where life was lived without electricity, and studying at night was accomplished using candles and kerosene lamps.
I think how can he keep it up when there are no electricity, and studying at night was accomplished using candles and kerosene lamps. It would be hard and he has a lot of motivation.
I wonder where he gets his motivation and will the future people from the poor countries will have this type of people?

WeiJun's curator insight, July 2, 2013 10:33 AM

A SAVUSAVU-born international photographer is now a household name in the fashion world having successfully completed a stint as a judge and lead photographer on the reality show, Caribbean's Next Top Model.

But Pedro Virgil, 40, whose personal portrait belies the face of someone who "comes from the bush", says he will never forget his formative years where life was lived without electricity, and studying at night was accomplished using candles and kerosene lamps.

His mother, Sikiti Lum, is from Namuka-i-Lau while father Charles Wakeham is from Savusavu. This shows that nothing is impossible if he can start from being very poor and not known to being very wealthy and famous.

Coven Chong Weng's curator insight, July 5, 2013 8:21 AM

From this article, i can see that Pedro Virgil who is a SAVUSAVU-born has become a international photographer despite all the challenges he faced when he was young such as studying at night with candles as his house did not have electricity. I think that we should be more appreciative for the things that we have now, as everything is provided by our parents now. I wonder where did he get his motivation from and also what did he do when he was not motivated.

Evelynkoh's curator insight, July 5, 2013 10:55 AM
After reading this article , i have finally understand what the true meaning of 'nothing is impossible' is. Its not an easy task to become successful , it takes years of work , blood and tears to finally succeed in what you hope for and dream for. However , becoming successful isn't any easier to people born in wealthier and better to do families. To succeed , you must work hard and prove to the whole world that you're capable of succeeding. To me , i do believe that everyone has the capability to succeed , its only based on yourself. If you preserve on or fall into the temptations along the way or even giving up at the start , feeling insecure that you'll never do anything right. Well , to succeed , you first have to have confidence and fate in yourself that you can do it no matter what happens. Not forgetting that your will has to be strong as the road to success is never easy , its based on how you see it. You may think people succeed easily but only when you're the one fighting for success then you'll know how tough it is. All these are found in Pedro Virgil , he's a success. He wasn't born from a wealthy family nor was he lucky to be popular in school. However all those didn't matter , he did it. He persevered since young and had knew what he wanted since young therefore he aimed for it and continue work on it till he is now. As we all know , now he's a well known international photographer and thats he's result of working hard. From his case story , we are able to know that as long as we work hard for something , someday it'll come true.

Bin He, Ph.D., leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human subjects to control the flight of small, remote-controlled helicopters using only their minds. The researchers believe this technology has the potential to restore mobility and independence to individuals suffering from neuromuscular disorders and paralysis, and could enhance the natural motor functions of pilots, surgeons and ordinary citizens.

ShengWei Luvs's insight:

I can see that there are many different parts of life can be improved as technology is getting more advanced. With technology, people now can even find out about their future possibilities. Bin He, Ph.D, leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human to control it by mind. I think that this invention is really interesting, meaningful and useful because things can be easily done without the use of hands which is suitable for people who are handicapped. I wonder if this device can be further improvised to help the disabled people to make their life easier and help the poor people.

I could refer form the article above that there are various types of way to improve our daily life using the capabilities of technology. It mention about this group of scientists and engineers working on a experiment that allows humans to control certain type of device by just using their minds without the movement of their physical body. By the end of this article , I hope that this invention could be used in the future to help those who are physically incapable to do something that they always wanted to.
Shameerza's curator insight, June 28, 2013 6:32 AM

From this article, i can see that Bin He, Ph.D, leads a team of scientists and engineers who are working on a device that allows human to control it by mind. I think that this invention is really fascinating and useful. By planting electrodes in the brain, by a single thought, it allows the beholder to control and move things. I wonder if this is powerful enough to lift heavy objects. In conclusion, this great invention, may lead into a greater and improved human technology in which will give us the power to levitate, move and control objects with only the power of a thought without using strength.

Tan Wenjia Polar Beary's curator insight, June 29, 2013 5:42 AM

Using see think wonder. The articles talkes about how Bin He ph D, and his teams of scientisits and engineers work on the device that allows human subjects to control the flight of small, remote-controlled helicopters using only their mind. This shows that we can turn our imaginations into possibilities. I feel that this article can influence younger generation to turn their imaginations into reality.

You are today where your thoughts have brought you & you will be tomorrow where your thoughts will lead you. Engage in the future when seeing possibilities.

Via John Michel, L¡Xu@N, Seetoh Jun Hao Jonathan
ShengWei Luvs's insight:

I see that one being exposed to negative or positive things will affect how one make their decisions and thoughts and thus leading them to their different futures. Believing that everything is control over fate and therefore not striving towards their goals. I think that we should think positively instead of negative thoughts as thinking positively will help you get more confidence, self-estem and have a goal in life. We must always see things from the bright side and be more of an optimistic person instead. I wonder if these decisions of being a positive or a negative person really make a difference in people's life.

Teo J-lyn's curator insight, July 3, 2013 3:23 AM

I can see that when people are awlays being exposed to negative thoughts and information, they tend to make bad choices due to their negative thoughts, affecting the way he or she lead their life. This cause people to feel demoralised , which will also affect the way they think. Thus, it is important to think positive, and see the brighter side of life. This will allow people to strive towards their goal, and have their desired outcome. I think attitude plays a important role in the way we think. i wonder why do people not think the positive side of life.

Jaslyn Si Jia's curator insight, July 4, 2013 5:59 AM

After reading this article, I realized that positive attitude is needed to determine the life we're living in and also the possibilities that we can achieve. Many people may be affected in their life due to the negative thoughts and attitude that they have, if they had positive attitude in all the things they do, they would live a better life and discover things that they might have never discovered before. These positive attitude and thoughts leads to finding even more possibilities and lead us to the right path onto our future.

Coven Chong Weng's curator insight, July 5, 2013 7:09 AM

From this article, i realise that with the right attitude, we can come up with all different kind of outcome in some situations. If your attitude is positive for everything, everything might just turn out the way that you want it. However if you have a negative attitude, things will not go the way you want it to and it might get even worse. Thus, i wonder why some people dont think with a positive attitude.
