I see that their hard work and perseverance has paid off. I think they have worked very hard and went through many obstacles to become successful. I wonder if everyone was like that, would becoming successful be 'successful'?

Jasmine Goh's curator insight, July 2, 2013 12:43 PM

After reading this article, I know that it is not easy to achieve success. The people in this article came from different backgrounds but they all faced setbacks in order to become successful. Although they struggled, these businessmen and businesswomen were able to achieve success through their determination as well as their willingness to sacrifice. Many of them took up several jobs to pay for their education fees. They were humble and had the courage to take risks. Through their hard work and effort, they eventually became successful. I think that if you want to be successful in life, you must have the determination to achieve your goal and believe that you are able to survive through the obstacles faced in the process. These people serve as my role model as they are local and they inspire me to work harder in everything I do. I wonder if they ever had the thought of giving up at the most difficult times in their lives.

Poon Ying Ying's curator insight, July 2, 2013 7:29 AM

Using the See-Think-Wonder route, i can see that in order to achieve our goals and turn our dreams into reality, we can not just sit at around and think or talk about it. A miracle will not happen just by wishing for it to happen, however we should work hard towards our goals and consistently close up the gap between a dream and reality. We should be determined about attaining our goals and have passion to be willing to work hard. To achieve our goals and dreams, we have to take 3 important moves. First, we have to be clear what define our dreams and goals. Take note of what actions have to be taken and write down clearly to always remind and motivate yourself. Secondly, you have to start taking actions. Now that you are clear about the steps to take, you will have to act them out. Work towards the right direction and make every act of yours productive. Lastly, you will have to draw the distance of your dream closer to you.

I think that it is complicated to think about doing all these to achieve our goals, but once we start to work towards our dreams, it will be much simple. Also i think it is not easy to work towards our dreams, but it is rather easy talking about acting it out and end up procrastinating, which is commonly seen. Therefore we all will need lots of determination and passion in order to take action. I feel that it is true about noting down our goals and steps to take, that is a reminder and motivation for us.

However i wonder how long will it take on average to reach our goals, if it require a very long period of time, how will people manage to persevere on? Will people get thoughts of giving up on the way towards their dreams because they are too tired pushing themselves to the limit? And how will they usually reject all the negatives thought and continue working hard?

Jasmine Goh's curator insight, July 2, 2013 1:12 PM

This article has clarified the factors leading to the realization of reaching possibilities. There are many factors that add up to achieving our dreams and goals. Some of which are being positive, willing to sacrifice and having the determination to succeed. However, after reading this article, there more more important aspects that help us realize our goals. First, we have to be clear of what we want to do. We have to know what exactly we want to accomplish, and involve our feelings in it so that we will be able to experience it on an emotional level. Secondly, we have to make adjustments and be flexible to go in the correct direction of being successful. Lastly, we have to change our perspective of attracting our dreams to us, and visualize ourselves in the future. These factors have really changed my mindset and influenced me to pursue my dreams.

Jaslyn Si Jia's curator insight, July 4, 2013 6:12 AM

After reading the article, I see that dreaming wouldn't help in achieving our goals and dreams but instead hard work does. In order to achieve our desired goals, we should work hard for it, for if no work is done, goals that we desire to get may be hard to come by. The article which shows techniques in achieving our desires are really helpful and I do hope that people actually uses these few techniques to actually work towards drawing their goals towards themselves. I wonder if people who use these techniques actually had the patience and perseverance (if it takes a long time to achieve the goal) to work towards their long awaited goals.

This article describes the different types of prejudice that lead to stereotyping and misjudgments. From this article, I have learnt that prejudice is a preconceived judgment or opinion that is usually based on limited information about a group or groups of people. The most common types of prejudice are those based on race, gender, sexual orientation and disability.
I feel that we should not judge people based on their skin colour or gender as it is unfair and rude to make false comments about them. Everyone should be treated with justice in spite of their race, religion and gender. We all should think twice before making comments or evaluating one's character and personality.
I wonder what good can even come out of making judgments and if there are none, why do people still judge?

Ameer Artsyrup's curator insight, July 5, 2013 7:26 AM

From this article i can infer that there are still many acts of discrimination happening in the world today like racism or gender discrimination. There is also social discrimination happening in schools and even in school places. This does not only happen in our time as in the past many acts of discrimination is practised throught the world. This can be seen as the blacks were socially discriminated in europe centuries due to their skin colour. Women in the past are discriminated as they aren't allowed to study, work or have any form of political power in the past as they are females. Eventhough these acts of discrimanation is actively happening in the past it is also rather saddening that mankind does realise his mistakes and infact still practises discrimmination. For example, in school, some of the students are discrimanted as they fat, ugly and slow in processing knowledge. I sometimes wonder when will people change their and begin accepting these group of people in the society. Thus I believe that we should stop discriminating each other but accept each strength and weakness in order to create a utopian society.

Asha Begum's curator insight, July 6, 2016 5:29 AM

This article talks about the different types of acts of prejudice existing today. Prejudice is judgement people make of others which may not be a truth.

Conflict in Multiethnic Societies

Conflict in Multiethnic Societies | Possibilities and Conflict and Prejudice by_Shum Jia Hui | Scoop.it

Shum Jia Hui's insight:

From this article, i learn that in this multi culture world, there will surely be conflicts. Some can become very serious, like in the example given, the conflict in Northern Ireland led to social segregation, declining economy and political reform. But we can do our part to prevent it. We must be gracious to other poeple. We muist respect the different culture, in turn they will do so too. Accept them into our society and not discriminate them. If there is any misunderstanding, we should try to talk nicely to settle it and not use our fists. We must be kind and treat everyone equally.

Shiying Tan's curator insight, June 27, 2013 1:19 PM

After the reading this article, I can see that there are issues, such as racism and misunderstandings, which contributed to the conflicts in multi-ethnic societies and resulted in severe damage to the country's pride and reputation. I also can see that this can be solved by acceptance and respect for each other, which might reduce the discrimination among people. Like what the article states, I also think that even though if people are of different ethnic group, they still belong in the same nation, therefore they should stop believing in the stereotypical beliefs and start learning to respect each other and be gracious and compassionate towards one another! I feel that the Government also plays a very important role in maintaining peace and harmony in its own country, as they can be the role models to run the respecting values in the country. Sometimes, I can't help but wonder why can't people just put themselves in others shoes, and think of them, before start saying things about them. This way, they would learn and understand what it all really means.

Shum Jia Hui's insight:

After reading this article, i feel very happy for those who have reading difficulties. Many people are prejudice against them, thinking they can't study, no future. After this new type of books for them is out, i am sure many of them will benefit from it. They are all like us, no one is perfect, so we should be prejudice against them due to their disabilities. They have the rights to study and have a bright future too. We should be in theur shoes, think how they feel, treating them equally.
