After a trio of landslide wins in Washington, Alaska and Hawaii on Saturday — the best single day of his campaign — Bernie Sanders narrowed his delegate deficit with Hillary Clinton. But he still has a lot of work to do. Sanders trails Clinton by 228 pledged delegates and will need 988 more — a bit under 57 percent of those available — to finish with the majority.

The Little Green Plant That Could: Duckweed as a Renewable and Sustainable Biofuel Feedstock

To meet the energy demands of a booming global population and preserve biosphere integrity, we must reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and find a more cost-effective and sustainable energy source. The development of renewable biofuels will aid in overcoming these daunting economic and environmental challenges. Corn, the main biofuel feedstock in the United States today, has serious drawbacks as an energy source; its high-maintenance cultivation requires significant amounts of fertilizer and freshwater while competing with food crops for arable land. In contrast, the small aquatic plant duckweed has emerged as a highly promising biofuel feedstock. Its composition—high starch and low lignin—is ideal for ethanol production. Furthermore, duckweed does not compete with land crops, grows rapidly, and is easily harvestable. We are actively constructing a demonstration pipeline to assess the potential of duckweed as a renewable and sustainable crop for ethanol production. Liquid sewage is used as an inexpensive fertilizer source to support duckweed growth, and post-harvest, the cleaned wastewater can be recycled. Optimization of this new approach involves screening duckweed plants collected from around the world to find a strain that is best suited for ethanol production. However, morphological identification of duckweed species and ecotypes can be difficult, as many appear similar or identical. Thus, we are employing DNA-based methods in the laboratory to develop reliable methods of distinguishing duckweed strains. These efforts will lay the groundwork for future experiments, allowing us to gain much needed insight into basic duckweed biology.

"It could fix a big problem with his climate legacy"

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

FROM THE ARTICLE: "This is important because sources of methane emissions that exist right now (currently operating wells, pipes, storage facilities, etc.) will continue to account for a major share of emissions into the future. Recent studies by the Environmental Defense Fund found that in both the United States and Canada, up to 90 percent of oil- and gas-sector methane emissions in 2020 will come from sources that already exist today.

In other words, because it ignored existing sources, Obama's previous methane policy was pretty toothless. The new rules announced today will have more teeth.

"There's a dramatic change in policy that is extremely welcome," said Jonathan Banks, senior climate adviser at the Clean Air Task Force...."

"Rural Youth Caucus: Here We Come" | Daily Yonder | 03/09/16 | Politics From My Point Of View | Scoop.it

Last weekend 25 rural young people from across the country  met in Washington, D.C., for a community-building workshop sponsored by YouthBuild USA’s Rural and Native Initiative. The Daily Yonder was there to document the event.

This was my fifth year at the YouthBuild Rural Youth Caucus. I love going. I always leave full of hope, an odd feeling for me. It’s three days of watching young folks leave their comfort zones, travel to a big city (for many their first time out of their state), then bond with absolute strangers over what they have in common and what they hope for in their hometowns. It’s inspiring.

YouthBuild USA is a national organization that gives youth from low-income families an opportunity to learn construction and life management skills as they build houses for others in need.

Franklin Delano Williams's insight:

.....Next year, Sparta-Hancock Alliance for Revitalization and Empowerment, Inc. (S.H.A.R.E., Inc.) hopes to have a delegation attending this event.  We are applying for a YouthBuild Project this year.

DETAILS:March 8th is International Women’s Day, and we’re so excited for the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women around the world.

Hillary Clinton has been a champion for women and girls her entire career. From co-founding the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977, to elevating women’s rights as First Lady, Senator and Secretary of State, Clinton has a proven record of fighting for gender equality.

Join us next Tuesday and stand with women all over the country by hosting a house party in your community. In the coming days, we’ll be sharing digital organizing tools and talking points you can use to spread the word on how Hillary will continue to fight for women as President. We will also be hosting a conference call in the evening with a very special guest who will be joining us to spotlight Hillary’s record.
