Senate battle in Michigan: Whiskey and sled rides

Senate battle in Michigan: Whiskey and sled rides | Politics | Scoop.it
Part of an occasional series on the hottest races of the 2014 midterm election.MARQUETTE, Mich. — Braving sub-zero temperatures at the annual dog sled race here, Democratic Senate candidate Gary Peters happily indulged when a prospective voter offered him a swig from her flask of whiskey. And as some Upper Peninsula locals (known as “Yoopers”)...
William O'Connor's insight:
As Republicans scramble to pick up six Senate seats in November, Michigan has emerged as a surprising option for the GOP. Seven-term Senator Carl Levin has decided to step down and the fight for his seat remains a dead heat. GOP Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has proven to be a far more capable candidate than most anticipated and Democratic Congressman Gary Peters has failed to build name recognition outside of his Detroit district. This will certainly be a race to watch.

Holt, Science Advocate From New Jersey, Won’t Seek Re-election to Congress | Politics | Scoop.it
Representative Rush D. Holt Jr., a research physicist who was an advocate for scientific research over his eight terms, joins 12 fellow Democrats and 21 Republicans in an exodus from the House.
William O'Connor's insight:

Congressman Rush Holt (D-NJ) announced this week his decision to retire at the end of the 113th Congress. His decision to step down has ushered in a flurry of Mercer County Democrats announcing their intention to run for his seat. The district was carved out of the reliably blue areas surrounding Princeton and is expected to stay in Democratic hands. With primary season approaching, this will be an interesting race to watch.

Why Russia No Longer Fears the West

Why Russia No Longer Fears the West | Politics | Scoop.it
The West is blinking in disbelief – Vladimir Putin just invaded Ukraine. German diplomats, French Eurocrats and American pundits are all stunned. Why has Russia chosen to gamble its trillion-dollar ties with the West? Western leaders are stunned because they haven’t realized Russia’s owners no longer respect Europeans the way they...

A.B. Stoddard: GOP in a mess for 2016

A.B. Stoddard: GOP in a mess for 2016 | Politics | Scoop.it
OPINION | Scandals surrounding Govs. Christie, Walker are dashing GOP's hopes.
William O'Connor's insight:

An interesting take on the GOP landscape for 2016. With favorites Christie and Walker embroiled in scandal, there appears to be no clear front runner. Coupled with the fact that Democrats have united behind an almost certain Clinton campaign, the Republicans are definitely climbing an uphill battle.

Obama to drop entitlement cuts from 2015 budget

Obama to drop entitlement cuts from 2015 budget | Politics | Scoop.it
President Barack Obama is done pretending that he’ll get any new budget cooperation from House Republicans. His proposed 2015 budget, due to be released next month, will stick to the economic strategy the White House has laid out without the compromise suggestion he floated last year, White House officials said Thursday. Gone, the White House...
William O'Connor's insight:
The White House announced on Wednesday President Obama's decision to scrap plans to cut entitlement benefits from the 2015 budget in exchange for tax increases. Just weeks after Congress passed a significant bipartisan budget agreement, the President has decided to step away from the negotiating table. As our national debt continues to rise over $17 trillion, this budget proposal is another classic example of the President failing to practice what he preaches.

Ted Cruz assails fellow Republican senators for 'trickery' - CNN (blog)

Ted Cruz assails fellow Republican senators for 'trickery' - CNN (blog) | Politics | Scoop.it
WDBJ7 Ted Cruz assails fellow Republican senators for 'trickery' CNN (blog) A shot at a possible rival: Cruz dismissed possible 2016 GOP presidential rival Rand Paul's criticism of Bill Clinton's "predatory behavior" in the White House – he said he...
William O'Connor's insight:

Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz is continuing to distance himself from Congressional Republicans, accusing his Senate colleagues of "trickery" in passing the clean debt ceiling increase last week. While rhetoric such as this plays out well among his Tea Party base, continually bashing his own party could prove to be a hurdle as he attempts to build a 2016 bid for the White House.
