Venetian Poker Room Overhaul Underway | Pokerati

Venetian Poker Room Overhaul Underway | Pokerati | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it

The long-awaited redesign of the Venetian Poker Room is in full gear, creating a major, albeit temporary, shift in big-room action on the Vegas Strip.

In a couple weeks, the renovated room will have 59 tables with bigger and better TVs — mounted on the walls and in pillars — and cushier chairs. The newly remodeled room is slated to open Sept. 1, according to the Venetian’s facebook page.

The old 52-table room quickly grew favor among regulars and tourists alike after it opened in 2006, particularly for its Deep Stack Extravaganza tournament series. But the Venetian’s prestige as the Best Poker Room in Vegas slipped with some poker enthusiasts as Aria opened 3 years later.

Poker Destinations Continue To Pop Up Across The United States | Card Player

Poker Destinations Continue To Pop Up Across The United States | Card Player | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it
Despite a sluggish economy, casinos continue to open in the United States at a torrid pace. State budget shortfalls have led to new and expanded casino development to fill in the gaps with tax revenue. As a result, states that had previously been absent of card rooms are becoming some of the biggest poker destinations in the country.

Poker, once relegated to the back rooms and given very little floor space, is now front and center in many casino properties. In some parts of the country, poker is actually the primary source of revenue for a gambling facility.

Caesars Pays Out $800,000 Bad Beat Jackpot In Atlantic City | Card Player | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it

Usually a poker player would be furious if they had quad nines lose to a king-high straight flush, but this incredible bad beat was probably one of the better things that ever happened at a poker table to Narong Sae Whited of Shelton, Washington, who earned the lion’s share of the largest bad beat jackpot since the concept was first introduced in Atlantic City in 2010.

Viktor "Isildur1" Blom No Longer With Team PokerStars | Pokernews

Viktor "Isildur1" Blom No Longer With Team PokerStars | Pokernews | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it
PokerNews discovered Tuesday that Blom was no longer listed as a member of the Pro team in the PokerStars client. Eric Hollreiser, PokerStars' head of corporate communications, told PokerNews that Blom and the company mutually agreed not to renew the Swede's expired sponsorship agreement.
Blom was introduced as a member of Team PokerStars during the 2011 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure and has been one of the most talked-about figures in poker over the past few years.
"In his short time as a poker player, Viktor has played against the biggest names in poker at the highest stakes in the toughest games," said Hollreiser. "It’s hard to recall a player who has kept the poker world so riveted at such an early stage of his career. We’ll be watching with great interest and we wish him nothing but success."

Ponzi Mastermind Who Lost Clients' Millions in Hollywood Poker Breaks Silence | Celebuzz | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it
A powerful man like Bradley Ruderman rarely answered his office phone. But on this occasion, the multi-millionaire hedge fund manager picked up. Just as well. When the caller identified himself, Ruderman was taken aback. It was Tobey Maguire. The Tobey Maguire.

Ruderman was used to mixing with the rich and influential; his hedge fund managed millions of dollars of other people’s money from offices in Beverly Hills. This, though, was different. Maguire was Hollywood A-list. And there was more. An intriguing invitation, extended to him: ”He said, ‘Hey, we have this game … Would you like to play?’”

Spider-Man was asking him round to his house to play poker.

Now, for the first time, Celebuzz can reveal exclusively the exact details of how Ruderman — who is currently serving time in a Texas prison after being convicted of embezzling $25 million from his investors — was drawn into a clandestine world of high-stakes illegal poker games; a secret society that included Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio as some of its most noted alumni.

The government needs some help.

Late last week, the United States Department of Justice released an employment opportunity notice on its website. The position is for a third-party “Claims Administrator” for the Full Tilt Poker remission process.

According to the DOJ, there are about 1.3 million “potential U.S. victims” — those with money stuck on defunct Full Tilt, which was sold to PokerStars just last week. Those former U.S. customers have account balances totaling about $159 million. The DOJ has the money to cover this amount after PokerStars paid its initial installment of $225 million. The U.S. will eventually receive $547 million from PokerStars.

Instapoker: Tour stops, PPA resources, and The Micros | Pokerati | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it
CardPlayer Poker Tour? Who knew? Seems it slipped my mind CardPlayer joined the ranks of those creating a series of events around the smaller casinos for the smaller buy-in crowd and a more acceptable schedule for Joe “Poker Player” Smith who has a real job. I barely remembered BLUFF Magazine bought the Mid-States Poker Tour. I guess everyone took a look at the Heartland Poker Tour model and will try to mirror their success.

Without letting the Pollack fox in the henhouse of course.

The World Poker Tour is also kicking off their 11 season in lovely Cyprus this weekend in a non-televised event but still drawing interest thanks to the Mediterranean atmosphere. The WPT returns to Cyprus for the first time since 2009 when the buy-in was $10,300 and drew 181 players. This time it’s only $4,400 but involves re-entries for those who bust (or low on chips) on Day 1A.

Tony Gregg wins WPT's Parx Classic | ESPN Poker

Tony Gregg wins WPT's Parx Classic | ESPN Poker | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it

When Greg Merson won his first WSOP bracelet and then followed it up with a seat at the WSOP main event final table, it seemed to the uninitiated like it had come out of nowhere. Merson, a short-handed cash game specialist, had been dominating poker tables for years though, and the lack of exposure was due in large part to those tables being of the non-tournament, online variety.

Merson's example is prudent here because it's easily comparable to Tony Gregg's. Gregg, too, is an online specialist, a cash game player known well to professionals but not to the public. He's also Merson's roommate. He's also Merson's backer, and like Merson, he's suddenly dominating tournaments. The latest example? The World Poker Tour's Parx Open Poker Classic, at the Parx Casino in Pennsylvania.

Up To 20 Firms Could 'Bid On' Full Tilt Poker Job | Card Player | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it
The United States Department of Justice recently announced that it’s seeking outside help with the Full Tilt Poker case. A claims administration firm will be hired to help compensate up to 1.3 million players owed a total of about $159 million.

Players will file claims to the third-party firm, a Department of Justice spokeswoman said Wednesday. The DOJ wouldn’t say how long the hiring process could take. It’s asking for applications to be sent in by Aug. 31.

The government also will likely ask for proposals from firms it has had experience working with before, according to Michael Bancroft, a partner at Philadelphia-based Heffler, Radetich and Saitta LLP — one of the leading claims administration groups in the country. He said there are about 20 such firms nationwide.

Zynga Poker notes a 41% drop in stocks | Industry Leaders Magazine

Zynga Poker notes a 41% drop in stocks | Industry Leaders Magazine | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it
Zynga Inc., the social game developer of such hit games as “Farmville” and CityVille”, published its second-quarter earnings. The weak financial results as well as also weak expectations for the rest of the year caused Zynga’s stock prices dropped 41 percent, to $3.18 a share.

Not the happiest “Stockville”

The drop is significant, especially if we take into consideration the fact that initial public offering in December, when Zynga debuted at $10 per share and then increased to $14.69 in March. Weak results of the well known social game developer on Wednesday were also blamed for taking down price of Facebook shares of an 8 percent drop after few hours. It is worth stating that 12 percent of Facebook’s revenue in 2011 was accounted by Zynga. Zynga’s financial and stock results will have an impact on Facebook, which is to publish its first earning report as a public company on Thursday. However there are some of Zynga’s second-quarter results that can be a proof of doing “something right”. Accordingly, Zynga’s revenue was $332.5 million was up 19 percent. In addition, the number of Zynga’s players increased, each month there is a rise of 34 percent. Zynga still dominates on Facebook; seven out of ten top titles were created by Zynga.

Rettenmaier goes back-to-back at WPT | ESPN Poker

Rettenmaier goes back-to-back at WPT | ESPN Poker | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it
Somehow, 2012 just continues to get better for Marvin Rettenmaier. The German kicked off the World Poker Tour's 11th season with a victory at the $4,400 buy-in Merit Cyprus Classic, becoming the first player in history to win back-to-back WPT events. Rettenmaier's victory over the field of 329 was worth $287,784, including a seat into the 2013 $25,500 WPT Championship where he'll defend his title from earlier this year. Rettenmaier has now earned four cashes of six figures (or better) in 2012 and is currently in third in both the Bluff and CardPlayer player of the year races.

"This is totally mad," said Rettenmaier to the World Poker Tour. "Now I am heading to Philadelphia to see if I can make it a triple at the WPT Parx Open Poker Classic. I have to keep going when things are going this well. I think I need to rebook my flight, though [since I'll miss Day 1A]."

Jeffrey Pollack Isn’t Dead in Poker ? | Wicked Chops Poker

Jeffrey Pollack Isn’t Dead in Poker ? | Wicked Chops Poker | Hit by the deck | Scoop.it

After Federated Sports+Gaming crashed and burned more spectacularly than any company in poker history, many wondered if Jeffrey Pollack, Annie Duke, and others would have a future in the industry again.

The popular industry consensus for the FS+G crew was:

Pollack was done. After leaving unceremoniously from the WSOP, the almost impossible mismanagement of Epic would keep him from poker employment ever again.
Duke would recover. She survived the UB cheating scandal, and she probably had little knowledge of Epic’s financial troubles.
Michael Brodsky wouldn’t want to touch anything in poker again.
David Goldberg shouldn’t want to touch anything in poker again.
