The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains

The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains | Poetry SLAMS | Scoop.it
A good story can make or break a presentation, article, or conversation. But why is that? When Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich started to market his product through stories instead of benefits and bullet points, sign-ups went through the roof. Here he shares the science of why storytelling is so uniquely powerful.

Raccontare storie è il modo migliore per attivare la mente

Allison Murray Pop's curator insight, July 21, 2015 4:15 PM

This article compliments the work of Paul and Elizabeth Barber in their book When They Severed Earth From Sky, a text that identifies brain behavior behind how the human mind shapes myth.  As the article explains, a memorable story is the perfect vehicle for not only learning, but also absorbing the story into our own neural network, in effect synthesizing the new information and "owning" it.

The article also states:

Quick last fact: Our brain learns to ignore certain overused words and phrases that used to make stories awesome. Scientists, in the midst of researching the topic of storytelling have also discovered, that certain words and phrases have lost all storytelling power:

This is why I advocate for original  language in place of cliches in my student's writing.

Storytelling, in original language, is one creative approach to personalizing learning.  My students frequently tell me their favorite part of class is the stories I tell to illustrate a point of my lecture.
