Podcasting: An Untapped Marketing Strategy

Podcasting: An Untapped Marketing Strategy | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
To date there are literally millions of podcasts out there each with a different subject to hock at us, most of them informational or for entertainment. Currently Ryan McKinley and I are recording ...
Stevie B's insight:

This is an interesting article on how writers can use podcasts to create awareness of their book and drive sales.

I had thought of similar approaches for my books, but this one is definintely well suited to comedic fiction.

Top 10 Audio Podcasts For Online Entrepreneurs

Top 10 Audio Podcasts For Online Entrepreneurs | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
When I used to have a commute to work I filled my 30-minute drive with podcasts. First they were purely for entertaining me and I listened to podcasts about film, comedy, or video games.
Stevie B's insight:

Here's a decent list of podcasts to check out if you are thinking of taking your brand to the next level or using podcasting to possibly earn income.

I am only able to vouch for a few of the shows on here (like Seth Godin's) and can't say that I've checked out each of these.

Do You Have a Radio Voice?

Do You Have a Radio Voice? | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
Stevie B's insight:

I loved reading this post.

When I first started preaching and doing public speaking, I had already recorded over 50 episodes of my podcast. My team leader sat me down one day and told me, "Steve, you preach like you're on the radio. You need to project more when you're in front of an audience, you can't speak the same way as if you're sitting at a desk with a microphone in front of you."

I've taken that advice to heart. But I've also noticed, as I went back and listened to my old episodes, I was too soft. Now I make sure to project more. But I don't have a "normal" voice and a "radio" voice. I try to say the same.

Give this post a read. Find your own authentic voice. Don't try to sound like someone you're not.

This article has useful tips to implement in your podcast or audio book recording.

‘Looper,’ in-theater podcasting and the new normal of audience engagement

‘Looper,’ in-theater podcasting and the new normal of audience engagement | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
Filmmaker Rian Johnson has pioneered in-theater commentary.
Stevie B's insight:

As a podcaster, and a fan of the movie Looper, I think this is a brilliant idea.

Writer-director of the film, Rian Johnson made a podcast giving fans of the movie his own private guided tour through the movie he created. Much like the commentary freely available on DVDs of most movies, only he made this a podcast for free download.  So far over 27,000 people have downloaded it and went back to the cinema a second time to watch the movie and listen to his conversationable commentary.

I saw the movie twice, and would have benefited from it, even though I think by the second viewing I understood the story much better.

"He’s part of a generation of filmmakers for whom creating and nurturing a dedicated audience is as instinctive as sending a text instead of leaving a voicemail."

Podcasting Takes Prominent Place In Content Marketing

Podcasting Takes Prominent Place In Content Marketing | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
If you're searching for new avenues to market content, consider adding podcasting to your content marketing strategy. Check out the benefits and reach.
Stevie B's insight:

Everywhere I go online I'm learning that the popularity of podcasting over the past 18 months is a trend that has been building and growing steadily and marketers and business are getting in on it as part of their content creation strategy.

Recorded audio and internet radio are growing in popularity and effectiveness, as evident in the rise in popularity of e-books (Amazon), music (iTunes) and sportscasts (ESPN), which have put audio back on a growth track.  The proliferation of smartphones and people being connected to the internet on their mobile devices only adds fuel to this fire.

Podcasting as a content marketing vehicle can brand you for who you are and what you want to be known for in a very personal way. It’s you speaking to and about the things you are knowledgeable and passionate about.

Rock your mojo and start a podcast for your business.  We can help you get started.

Stitcher, the Pandora of Talk, Works to Make Internet Radio Easier | Xconomy

Stitcher, the Pandora of Talk, Works to Make Internet Radio Easier | Xconomy | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
Sometimes we don’t realize what was so great about a traditional medium until a new one comes along and tries to take its place. Consider radio. Web-based
Stevie B's insight:

Stitcher, the four-year-old startup in downtown San Francisco has probably done more than any other firm to bring talk radio and podcasting into the smartphone era.  If your podcast isn't yet smartphone friendly--what are you waiting for?  With over half of all internet activity now taking place on smartphones, the serious podcast needs to give serious thought to whether you want to make and/or market your own smartphone app for your show.

If you don't know where to start yet, then submit your show to Stitcher where it can be discovered on the 'radio-on-demand' format by other users searching for similar shows in your niche.

Terrestrial radio isn't going anywhere anytime soon by the looks of it, but it’s an absolute certainty that the Internet is a better way of delivering the audio content people want to hear.

Also, the article explains why this is called Stitcher:

"the stations are stitched together algorithmically from many shows or segments of shows. In other words, creating a station on Stitcher is not like subscribing to a specific podcast in iTunes or other podcasting apps. I was confused and frustrated about this as an early user, until I finally got it through my head that this is part of Stitcher’s strategy for simplifying the Internet radio experience. It’s basically Pandora for talk radio—you pick your station and then just listen to whatever it plays. "

So get your podcast on in there, since radio-like experiences are sure to be part of the media mix on the Internet far into the future, whether they’re delivered via smartphones, tablets, PCs, or brain implants.  Stitcher seems to be building a lead and the serious podcast does not want to miss the boat.

Adam Carolla does it his way

Adam Carolla does it his way | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it

Adam Carolla just may be one of the most interesting people in entertainment.  He's also another example of a comedian or radio show host--or in his case, both--who went from terrestrial radio to podcasting, and was wildly successful at it.

He also has a new book out called "Not Taco Bell Material".  I have no idea what it's about.

But I do know his podcast is considered one of the standard setters, and The Adam Carolla Show now holds the Guinness Book record as the world's most downloaded podcast.

He's got his podcast mojo alright.  Give this article a quick read.

No More Radio: Podcast network brings Montreal to the world

No More Radio: Podcast network brings Montreal to the world | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it

Edge of the City, a local independent weekly arts and culture program, has added a weekly Monday podcast for the last year, and they are reaching a larger audience through podcasting than they were when they were on the traditional radio format.

I've not yet heard of very many DJs or talk show hosts who went from radio to podcasting.  Normally it's the reverse!  At any rate, these two did it, and they're launching a network of 'local' podcsts from the Montreal area.

This just goes to show you podcasters don't just become radio stars anymore--radio stars leave that medium and now find a larger audience in podcasting.

Free Music & Sound Loops for Podcasters

Free Music & Sound Loops for Podcasters | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it

For the podcaster, sometimes finding good music that's royalty-free or uncopyrighted can be a challenge.  If you're serious about podcasting, you'll more than likely need some kind of music for your show.

Some show producers create introductions and outros that have no music whatsover, but I'm assuming if you want to rock your podcast mojo, you'll probably come up with something.

Check out these three suggestions.  Granted, they were for PowerPoint users, but you can find loops and stuff that may work for your background music needs.

Podcast and Audio Book Content are Engaging Mobile Communities - Business 2 Community

Podcast and Audio Book Content are Engaging Mobile Communities - Business 2 Community | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it

There are well over a million (probably closer to two million) smartphones activated every day. Add to that the fact that consumers are addicted to checking their mobile devices for relevant news and information.

Stevie B's insight:

In my humble opinion, nothing has been a greater aid to the reinvigoration of podcast as the smartphone revolution has been. By 2015, it's estimated that more people in the entire planet will be using the internet on a phone than on a computer. That's a bigger revolution than the internet was in the 1990s, and the television was in the 1950s.

So, it only makes sense that something like podcasting and consuming digital content on a mobile device would also see a spike in use.

Check out this article for more on that.

Will the success of podcasting mean the end of the medium? | Radio Survivor

Will the success of podcasting mean the end of the medium? | Radio Survivor | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
Successful podcasters think podcasting is strong, but I’m wondering if the future of the medium will be its end as it melts into the online radio stew.
Stevie B's insight:

"This line of reasoning begs the question: will podcasting remain its own medium, or will it merge into a larger universe of online radio? In that universe the only difference will be live vs. on demand, just like what’s happening to television. In fact, there are several podcasts produced by networks like TWiT and 5by5 that are streamed live at the same time they are recorded for subsequent podcast distribution, further blurring the distinction between podcasts and radio.

Services like Stitcher and DAR.fm are moving us towards that universe where podcasts and radio programs live alongside each other with no artificial divisions. Even live broadcasting stalwarts like iHeartRadio and SiriusXM are going in that direction, with each offering a selection of on demand programs in addition to their wider live station inventory."

Why Apple Needs to Fix Its Podcast Problem | Cult of Mac Mobile

Why Apple Needs to Fix Its Podcast Problem | Cult of Mac Mobile | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it

Apple treats podcasting like an unwanted stepchild. I think this is a huge missed opportunity for Apple — and for audio and video content

Stevie B's insight:

As someone who has been podcasting since 2007, I've generally been quite happy with how the iTunes setup has worked for podcasting.  Apparently, Apple has not been so innovative when using it's typical "blank-slate thinking" to podcasting, especially in the mobile device world.  If they did, I'm sure we'd see them pioneer some new app or way of podcasting on smartphones.

"A rough consensus has emerged in some quarters that Apple neglects the podcasting and the Podcasts app because there’s nothing in it for Apple. Podcasts are free, so Apple gets no cut. There’s no money in podcasting, so who cares?"

"The whole future of all media is podcasting — streaming, downloadable and subscribable — but the legacy producers want to exclude grass-roots competition by never, ever calling themselves podcasters."

podcastomatic.com turns blogs into podcasts! | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it
Stevie B's insight:

Here's something different.  If you're a blogger combining podcasting with your writing, this might be an app worth looking into.

Podcastomatic is a webapp that makes it possible to convert your favourite blogs into podcasts.

Podcastomatic uses standard text-to-speech software, so don’t expect a beautiful voice to fill your ears with your favourite blogs.  I tried it with my personal blog and it prepared a file rather speedily.  However, as stated, it sounded like a computer reading my blog posts with no tone.

Simply type in the URL of the blog you want converted, and Pocastomatic automatically creates audio files for each blog entry. You can then subscribe to the RSS feed for the podcast in iTunes, or download each entry separately.

The Great Canadian National Day of Podcasting

The Great Canadian National Day of Podcasting | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it

This is something I haven't heard of before, but think is a great idea!

Every year, Canadian Podcasters all huddle around their microphones and put out an episode to be published on December 1. This website lists the episodes published and lets podcasters upload or add themselves to the list.

From perusing the list of shows, I don't see any indication that there's a common thread between all these shows other than they are from Canadian content producers.

I will try to not miss this next year!

Aisha Tyler juggles "The Talk," stand-up, podcasting and more - The Denver Post

Aisha Tyler juggles "The Talk," stand-up, podcasting and more - The Denver Post | Podcast Mojo | Scoop.it

When I was younger, I wanted to be like David Letterman or Jay Leno.  I liked them both equally and it was always a toss up which one I'd watch.

In fact, I remember in the summer of 1996 trying to stay up late every night and watch the NBC show that came on at 1:35am after Late Night with Conan Obrien.

It was for a variety of reasons, one of which was that all of these shows in those days introduced me to cutting edge music, and often times they had laugh out loud hilarious stand up comedians I'd discover.

I didn't have internet yet, and wouldn't until 1998 and even then I felt like I was late to the party, but one thing that has changed since I was a teenager is that I now hardly ever watch any of those programs live, but watch footage that goes viral the next day or week.  The stuff that people are talking about and sharing on social networks.

Now, being on different television shows in order to reach millions of people just isn't as necessary any more.  The internet has leveled the playing field and some people have become famous without ever hitting terestrial radio or traditional broadcast television.

Here's another comedian making a splash in the podcasting realm.

Countless comedians have found success lately with podcasts, while others have concentrated on traditional late-night TV spots, sitcom roles, books, Comedy Central specials and even talk-show hosting gigs.
