How We Will Read: Clay Shirky

How We Will Read: Clay Shirky | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it

"The question isn’t what happens to publishing — the entire category has been evacuated. The question is, what are the parent professions needed around writing? Publishing isn’t one of them. Editing, we need, desperately. Fact-checking, we need. For some kinds of long-form texts, we need designers. Will we have a movie-studio kind of setup, where you have one class of cinematographers over here and another class of art directors over there, and you hire them and put them together for different projects, or is all of that stuff going to be bundled under one roof?"

A decade of Amazon Kindle

A decade of Amazon Kindle | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Ten years ago this week, Amazon released the first Kindle. It was big and clunky and kind of ugly, with an awkward physical keyboard and 250 MB of on-board storage, priced at a lofty $399. It sold out in less than six hours and would remain that way until the following April. Amazon, it seemed, was really onto something.

Publishing as activism

Publishing as activism | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
Of course, publishing has always mattered, but in the recent past it has been all too easy - whether you're an agent, bookseller, author or publisher - to convey a vague sense of apology that you don't have a proper job, like a bin man or a doctor or a climate change scientist. The idea that publishing is full of white middle class people lounging in isolated garretts and cosy little shops and Bloomsbury offices, pondering where to put a semi-colon or what whisky to order with lunch, has exercised a tenacious hold over the collective imagination.

The biography of a paperback – books podcast

The biography of a paperback – books podcast | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
This week the books podcast takes a physical turn, shifting away from the intangible business of writing to consider the hunks of wood we haul around for our reading pleasure. With sales of printed books on the rise, there’s little sign the reading experience will go entirely digital any time soon. So how does a novel make the jump from manuscript to bookshop, and what happens next?

Is Dystopian Backlist a Publishing Utopia? | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
It’s been a good half a year for two particular adult dystopian science-fiction backlist titles. In the months following the election of President Trump, George Orwell’s 1984 and Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale shot to the top of the charts. Both titles landed on the NPD BookScan and Amazon bestseller lists for print and Kindle e-books, respectively, for the first half of 2017, and both were newly released in hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in April.

The business of small presses: 4 things we learnt the hard way

It doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to say that we’re in the middle of a golden age for small press publishing. In just the last few years, the UK has seen the launch of 404 Ink, Silver Press, Dead Ink, Charco Press, Dodo Ink and many others. Small presses are ‘doing the heavy lifting’ in publishing BAME writers, and are more visible and more successful than in decades, largely due to their ability to exploit the verticalization of audiences and unbundling of publishing services enabled by the internet.

The value of variety

The value of variety | Pobre Gutenberg | Scoop.it
In the future, the leading, ‘original’ format in many cases will be an electronic version. Print renditions will then be imperfect replicas of the ‘real’ ebooks, featuring some, but probably not all, of the functionality of the electronic source. Once authors and publishers have adopted this change, this will provide the opportunity to offer a great variety of different ebooks for different purposes.
