Starting Scoop.it

Just starting to get the hang of scoop.it. It's basically an aggregator funnel. Set up a topic and specify keywords to search for. Scoop.it aggregates what it finds on a page. Scan through that stuff and add select posts to the topic. Can also set up some custom searches via rss, google, twitter. Finally, use a bookmarklet for select posts. Scoop.it seems to be best for temporally vital material.

Setting up incoming rss feeds is convenient because it lets the curator scan and select new stuff quickly.

Can also follow other curated aggregations.

So: Is it good for PLE or MOOCs? Might well be. It lets the learner or admin find and manage stuff to share as a topic, and lets multiple learning post to the same topic.

* Need to keep the topic keywords tight to prevent false positives.

Getting Organized
* Seems to be topic-grabbing going on right now. Social Media is taken as a topic, but nothing's posted. I grabbed Wikis, but may delete it. Seems to be that the advice to make a topic specific is pretty smart.
* Might be good to set up topics aligned with courses; i.e. I set of ArgumentAndExposition for ENGL 2151: A&E. I can set the keywords to whatever we're doing, and manage rss feeds from students in the class. I'm not sure what happens over time, so I also set up Social Media 2012 for the revamped Weblogs and Wikis in coming in spring. This makes it possible to manage sub-sets of stuff. Topics can be deleted, too, and (perhaps) immediately restarted with a clean slate.

Personal use: Sure.
