Impact Letters-Interview With Brad Reedy Ph.D.

Impact Letters-Interview With Brad Reedy Ph.D. | Woodbury Reports Inc.(TM) Week-In-Review | Scoop.it

In treatment of adolescents, Impact Letters are often misused explained Brad Reedy to Lon December 13, 2018.  In treatment programs, Impact Letters are often asked of parents with children in a teatment program to communicate how the child’s actions have negatively impacted them.  Reedy’s concerns come from the observation that often in practice, the focus becomes about the parent’s personal hurt from the child’s actions rather than support for how the child can do better....

Lon Woodbury's insight:

Impact Letters are often asked of parents to communicate to their children in a treatment program how the parents had been hurt by the child's past actions.  If not properly used by the staff however, the result can be guilt on the part of the child, instead of learning from that experience.  -Lon

WhyYour Kids Need Animal Fats-Interview With Sally Fallon Morell

WhyYour Kids Need Animal Fats-Interview With Sally Fallon Morell | Woodbury Reports Inc.(TM) Week-In-Review | Scoop.it

It has become well established that diet is very important in determining the mood of a person as well as their health and general well being.  The Weston A. Price Foundation and Sally Fallon Morell is a minority voice but one that makes some sense and should be considered when addressing ways to help teens get through their adolescense in a healthy manner.  -Lon

Lon Woodbury's insight:

When dealing with young people with behavioral/emotional problems, diet seems to be way down on the list of importance.  Pehaps that has been a mistake and what the young people eat is more important as treatment than is generally assumed.  _Lon

Update on Telos Senior House (UT)

Update on Telos Senior House (UT) | Woodbury Reports Inc.(TM) Week-In-Review | Scoop.it
Nearly one year ago Telos opened a small specialty team exclusively for students nearing their 18th birthday. The Senior House was specifically designed for students too old to be comfortably placed in a youth program, but in need of higher structure, oversight, and services than what is typically offered in a young adult setting. Historically, these students have been hard to place, as their age forces parents and referral sources to choose between two non-ideal situations.

An Open Letter & Plea to Therapists & Treatment Programs: Stop Having Parents Write 'Impact Letters', by Dr. Brad Reedy

This young woman shared a litany of life-threatening behaviors and her first thought was what her parents went through. That is not the point of this intervention/letter. With the letter, the professionals have allowed the focus to become ... the parents.
Lon Woodbury's insight:

The message here by Brad Reedy is that a parent telling a child of the impact he/she has on them is the wrong motivation for the child to start healing.  -Lon

The Psychopharmacology of Everyday Life | by Jamieson Webster | NYR Daily

The Psychopharmacology of Everyday Life | by Jamieson Webster | NYR Daily | Woodbury Reports Inc.(TM) Week-In-Review | Scoop.it
Modern psychopharmacology goes hand in hand with a psychiatric diagnostic system that has, over time, been redefined to rely on medicating symptoms away rather than looking at the structure of the mind and its complex permutations in order to work with a patient in a deeply engaged way over the long haul. Modern psychiatry is hailed as a scientific success story, and drug companies have profited from the fact that talking therapies are often thought to take too long, their results frequently dismissed as unverifiable. I question, though, whether we should demand verified results when it comes to our mental life: Do you believe someone who promises you happiness in a pill?
Lon Woodbury's insight:

Pain and medication: a philosophy of life, or a tool, or down the rabbit hole?  -Lon
