Defining Level 1 Autism: Distinguishing Why Different Levels of Care are Needed for Different Traits

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined as having persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts. The current DSM-5 diagnostic manual has separated the disorder into three varying degrees:

  • Level 1: Requiring Support
  • Level 2: Requiring Substantial Support
  • Level 3: Requiring Very Substantial Support

With the changes in describing Autism in the DSM-V, a lot of confusion has occurred.  This is a decent attempt to clarify how treatment is approached under the new definitions. -Lon

The decade of the 1960s saw significant experiments in alternative ways of raising our children, with Synanon being a major altrernative approach in helping drug addicts.  One of the outgrowths from several alternative approaches, including Synanon, to helping young people with problems was the CEDU school which at its peak had seven schools throughout the West.  Bill Lane was an important part of the transition in schools from the 1960s creative approaches. j -Lon

The late 1980s is often considered the peak of the CEDU/RMA schools' popularity and success.  The RMA student population grew from about 90 in 1984 to almost 200 by 1990 (with ups and downs in student population of course).  Some of the wealthiest parents in the country who could have chosen any school or program in the world for their struggling children decided RMA or CEDU were most likely to benefit their child....
