Company develops conductive yarn for soldier uniforms

Company develops conductive yarn for soldier uniforms | PIP | Scoop.it

Modern military uniforms for servicemen from some countries such as those that serve Great Britain have evolved to the point that batteries and cables are needed for electronic devices that are carried; the problem with that of course is that cables are unwieldy and batteries are bulky, not to mention heavy. Both tend to get in the way of mobility, which is rather crucial for a soldier in battlefield conditions. To get rid of the cables, a company called Intelligent Textiles has come up with a type of yarn that can conduct electricity, which can be woven directly into the fabric of the uniform. And because they allow the uniform itself to become one large conductive unit, the need for multiple batteries can be eliminated as well.

Reevaluating How and Why Women Watch Sports

Reevaluating How and Why Women Watch Sports | PIP | Scoop.it
Researchers Erin Whiteside, an assistant professor at University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Marie Hardin, an associate professor at Pennsylvania State University, studied 19 heterosexual married women (all white except for one black woman and one Latina, and 15 of them with children) between the ages of 26 and 43 years old. They found that, for women, watching sports was associated with “emotion labor” rather than leisure. Some of their other findings included: The women watched sports by chance rather than choice, if their personal schedules paralleled the sports’ schedules. The women rarely watched a whole game or event because of conflicts with other responsibilities that took preference.Although they admitted they do not often watch women’s sports, they still think the media should give those sports equal coverage and focus less on the sexual appeal of athletes such as Danica Patrick.

Matildas disrespect a blight on the women’s game - STRUCTURAL LEVEL (Media influence - Womens Sport)

Matildas disrespect a blight on the women’s game - STRUCTURAL LEVEL (Media influence - Womens Sport) | PIP | Scoop.it
There were about 100 of us on the south hill on a lazy Sunday afternoon at McKellar Park watching some of the best women footballers go round. The weather would have appeared perfect on the ABC broadcast, but TV doesn’t show how cold the wind is up at 650m. The afternoon started abysmally, the PA system failing horrendously as it mangled both anthems, with only the English version played of the New Zealand anthem. This just the tip of the total snubbing the women’s game still faces.
