Phytophthora and their relevance to New Zealand
New Zealand's plant systems are significantly impacted by species of Phytophthora that threaten plant production and biodiversity values of our native ecosystems, horticultural sectors and forestry. Key examples include kauri dieback, red needle cast of radiata pine and crown rots of apples. Follow this page to stay up to date with what is happening in Phytophthora management and research around the world which is of relevance here in New Zealand.

Welcome to Forest Phytophthoras of the World

Plant pathogens in the genus Phytophthora threaten the biodiversity and sustainability of forest ecosystems worldwide. The aim of the website is to provide science-based information to aid in the understanding and management of the world’s forest Phytophthora species. Fourteen of the most damaging species of forest Phytophthoras are profiled as of December 2014. Click on any Phytophthora species (see left sidebar) to reveal information about the pathogen and the forest disease(s) it causes, access educational and disease management materials, and view scientific  references.

Nari Williams's insight:

Phytopathology Journal - 104(10):1052 - Abstract

This research has recovered 28 different Phytophthroa taxa from Oregon plant nurseries over a 4 year period; identifying key risk points across production. This has significant implications for Biosecurity, and plant health.
Nari Williams's insight:
This important US study has huge implications for nurseries as a pathway for the spread of Phytophthora species. There is a great deal we can take from this in assessing the pathways of spreading these species here in NZ.

Nari Williams's insight:

More key lessons to be learnt from responses to Phytophthora species internationally. How would we respond if an aerially dispersed, broad host range species that impacts all parts of the plant such as  Phytophthroa ramorum was found in New Zealand tomorrow and what would it mean to our diverse plant production systems and natural plant estates?
