Conscientious Extended | Meditations on Photographs: Jacob Israel Avedon, Sarasota, Florida, May 15, 1971 | Photography Now | Scoop.it

Our memories are our own personal histories. As we age, they accumulate, usually in flattering, merciful ways. This is how Nature has our brains operate, to allow us to preserve a modicum of dignity (or what we think dignity might be). On the other side, the literally other side: the surface of the skull, Nature tends to be less kind. Here, we cannot easily hide that which we do not want to share. In our faces, we see our history, we see what life has done to us. As we age, we age visibly.

Portfolio: Guillermo Srodek-Hart, Short Stories I | Photography Now | Scoop.it

Guillermo Srodek-Hart has a show at the Dina Mitrani Gallery in Miami called "Short Stories." The exhibition includes images taken during the artist's travels to photograph interiors in remote rural towns outside of Buenos Aires. These interiors - frequently crowded with highly organized objects - tell as much about the lives lived there as about the spaces themselves. Accompanying the photographs in the show are texts that further explore the lives of the people that the artist encounters in these isolated towns.

Moscou: The Japanese vanguard | La Lettre de la Photographie | Photography Now | Scoop.it

What a surprise to see a self-described “classical” gallery open its doors to conceptual Japanese photography. This vast space, usually reserved for immaculate large-format prints of wild countrysides, presents a selection of Japanese photographers in their forties. In this group, supposedly representing the cream of contemporary Eastern photography, we notice a perfectionism, a penchant for refined detail.

After the death of Whitney Houston this weekend, several people posted an isolated vocal version of “How Will I Know.” Here you can finally listen to this woman’s voice without the 80’s arrangements. People also posted two photographs for the cover of 1986/1987’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” credited to Richard Avedon.

INTERVIEW: Robert Frank – “Highway ’61 Revisited” (1987) | Photography Now | Scoop.it

“I’d like to make a film which would mingle the private aspects of my life with my work, which is public by definition… how the two poles of this dichotomy join, interlace, are at variance , and fight each other, as much as they complement each other…“Two houses. Two countries. Two points of view. One is outside cultural life , the other right in it. One is the other’s refuge. Both are at the same time necessary and useless…

Hyperjunk: Observations on the Proliferation of Online Galleries

Hyperjunk: Observations on the Proliferation of Online Galleries | Photography Now | Scoop.it

Recently the topic of online galleries and their proliferation in the past year has been on the tips of many tongues. Specifically, the argument involves a musing on how the development of online venues for showing net-based work is providing a fundamental shift in the paradigms of traditional art market systems.

The Problem with Western Press Photo

The Problem with Western Press Photo | Photography Now | Scoop.it

This World Press Photo of the Year 2011 was taken by Samuel Aranda. There are many categories and as many winners, but there is only one big winner, and Aranda's photo it was. . A post on the New York Times’ Lens blog noted that the image “has the mood of a Renaissance painting” - which, of course, is true. And that’s exactly one of the problems here.
