African Fashion/African Art

African Fashion/African Art | Photography | Scoop.it
The other day my friend Mecca called and asked if I would have the time to
shoot a few pieces for her. Initially, I had no idea what she meant. Her
talents are so multi-faceted that I didn't know if we'd be shooting
fashion, "blingery" and accessories or copy work of her art.

I didn't have to wonder for long as she let me know that she had created a
few new outfits and just wanted some images to showcase them on the web. I,
of course, said I'd do it. We arranged a convenient time and since our
budget was "we have no budget"; I suggested that she be the make-up artist,
wardrobe mistress and also the model. she said, "That worketh"

Looking through and wearing the creation: an African print with navy
stretch denim.

She will customize your shoes to put a little bling in your step.

I thought this blue treatment was perfect for this Kente print with
electric blue trim.

Love this detail shot of these funky pants.

She makes bags and all manner of accessories to go along with the outfits
she creates. So it was a bit of a product shoot too. I wasn't ideally
equipped for shooting product. I pulled some aluminum foil over a piece of
cardboard and managed clean up the shadows, err, adequately.

That happy accident where you fire a test shot to make sure the background
strobe is popping, you look at it in post and come up with this. She was
shielding her eyes from one light to see if the other was firing. Lol.
Perfect.

Messing around with sliders in post production and pull out something like
this. I really dig how fashion can sort of become art. The Ankh and the
infinity loops on the fabric stir something ancient and for me, something
ancestral.

BEFORE THEY PASS AWAY

BEFORE THEY PASS AWAY | Photography | Scoop.it

"The wigmen of the Huli people aren’t like Western toupee manufacturers. They are wizards who only work with people who have fine heads of hair. What a traditional wigman does is use ancient magic to make hair grow faster than normal so it can be cut off and turned into a wig. Evidently, magic – like hair restorer – doesn’t work if the hair is long gone." - Jimmy Nelson

Jimmy Nelson is a British photojournalist and photographer known for his portraits of tribal and indigenous peoples.

In 2009 Nelson started to work on his biggest project to-date, Before they Pass Away. He travelled for 3 years and photographed more than 35 indigenous tribes around the world in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and the South Pacific, using a 50-year-old 4x5in camera.[5] Nelson said that the project was "inspired by Edward Sheriff Curtis and his great photographs of Native Americans". The tribes that Nelson photographed include the Huli and Kalam tribes of New Guinea, the Tsaatan of Mongolia and the Mursi people of the Omo River valley in southern Ethiopia. Jimmy borrowed the funds from a Dutch billionaire, Marcel Boekhoorn.
