Scott Kelby - The World on White Seamless on Exposure

Scott Kelby - The World on White Seamless on Exposure | Photography News Journal | Scoop.it
I’m looking through some bracketed photos I had taken of the Eiffel Tower while on a business trip to Paris (I thought I might use these bracketed photos to create some HDR images) when I noticed that the third bracketed image (the shot that is overexposed by two-stops) was so bright that the entire sky had gone completely solid white. It was as if the Eiffel Tower had been shot with a roll of white seamless paper as its background, but the more I looked at it…the more I liked it. I think it was the fact that there’s such a huge contrast between the brownish steel structure offset against that stark white sky — it was really intriguing to me. If I had tried to create this look in Photoshop, it would have taken hours to make the sky this white because of all the intricate metal work and keeping all the small detail would have been really tricky, but here I am looking at it right out of the camera and it’s all done for me without moving a pixel. But it wasn’t until I started to tweak the look of the tower in Lightroom’s Develop Module that I felt I might be on to something kinda cool. Here’s what I did:First, I added lots of contrast, then I increased the Clarity amount a bunch to bring out the texture and detail in the metal. Next I desaturated the image quite a bit by lowering the Vibrance amount (the tower looked weird to me in that full-on brown color), and lastly I sharpened it to death. So, that’s pretty much what I applied to all the images so that they would have a similar look — one that’s kinda “crunchy” and contrasty and not fully black and white (so there’s a hint of colors — more in some images than in others) and an overall brownish duotone-like tint over it (only because that’s where I started with the Eiffel Tower photo). Also, in some cases I had to increase the Exposure in the top corners of the sky (due to lens vignetting) or other areas that weren’t 100% white, but it was pretty minor stuff for the most part (I could just paint right over the corners with the Adjustment Brush). So, that’s how I wound up starting the series — a happy accident — a look I probably wouldn’t have noticed had I not taken that shot of the Eiffel Tower with a sky that, when overexposed by two stops, would turn solid white. The photo in the header at the top of this post is the main courtyard (Cour Napoléon) of The Louvre Palace in Paris, and the photo below is the Effiel Tower shot that started this journey.
