"I don't know much about those two images of a Phase One 645DF camera with a Leaf Aptus-II 12 digital back mounted on a video rig with focus pulling and external mic, but I do know that back in 2010 there were some rumors that Phase One is working on a medium format digital back with live view and RAW video recording."

Notes on the Nikon D800

Notes on the Nikon D800 | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"I went to Nikon yesterday with my photojournalist friend Keith Bedford to get hands on a pre-production D800 and in particular look at it’s video functionality. As with my previous look at the D4 I was unable to take away any recorded imagery but we were able to test the camera with a range of accessories to see how the camera would work when set up for video. Here are a few of my notes and observations."

Apple's Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 starts to regain pro features

Apple's Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 starts to regain pro features | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"Apple has updated Final Cut Pro X, its high-end video editing package to v10.0.3, with the ability to import projects from Final Cut Pro 7. The upgrade includes several pro-level options, such as multi-camera syncing, that were not included when the first release replaced the more expensive and complex Final Cut Pro 7. Initially its different way of handling clips made look like Apple wouldn't be able to get Pro 7 projects to work in Pro X but a $9.99 Apple app called 7toX has found an xml-mediated method of doing so.

The update will be available for free to existing Final Cut Pro X users. The related Motion and Compressor applications have also been upgraded."

How to best use twixtor for extreme slow motion

How to best use twixtor for extreme slow motion | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"I have used twixtor myself for a few projects but I have never had terrific success with it. One of the best filmmakers I know who uses Twixtor really well is my friend Salomon Ligthelm, whom I met when he lived in Dubai back in January last year. He put up a new video a couple of days ago, Gravity, and he was kind enough to write this guest blog post on how to get the best out of it.

Twixtor will not give you as good results as a dedicated high speed camera of course. They do that job incredibly well. You need to light a lot to make them work but as you will read below you need to do the same with twixtor to get the high shutter speeds needed. But for those whose budget means renting a Phantom Flex or something similar is out of the question Salomon guides you through the best ways to make the most out this powerful, but tricky plug-in."

Editing HD video from a DSLR - why a software upgrade may be best

Editing HD video from a DSLR - why a software upgrade may be best | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it
The widespread availability of HD video recording on everything from mobile phones to DSLRs has seen us capturing events in better quality than ever before. DSLRs in particular have proven a revelation in movie capture: what they lack in video ergonomics and ease of focusing is more than made up for in flexibility and sheer quality. Indeed many professional film and television producers are adopting DSLRs for a variety of tasks from backup cameras to primary capture devices.

Do You Have a 4K Future?

Do You Have a 4K Future? | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"You likely have an HD TV in your home. Maybe more than one. A 3D TV? Maybe not. 3D TV has been one of the big flops of the past few years. A technology no one really wanted (except maybe in theaters for block-buster popcorn movies). But the TV makers (Sony, Samsung, Panasonic et al) are in a jamb. They need to sell you a new TV, but TVs last a long time, and once you'd gotten your first HDTV have become a sort of appliance. Who gets excited about buying a new refrigerator?

The next step in TV evolution isn't 3D, it's 4K. There are no 4K TVs at the moment (at least not under $30,000), and only a few high-end projectors, but that's going to change quickly over the next few years. Many new major film productions are being shot in 4K, and increasingly still photographers on commercial assignments are shooting stills and video with the same 4K camera.

Because 4K is the hot topic in video production for many pros shooting commercially it will become a part of their workflow. 4K TV in the home isn't going to happen overnight. But 4K production is here today, and 4K projectors are what's being installed in cineplexes around the world. This also has implications for stills photographers as well as movie makers of all strips..."

3 Years Later, DSLR Video, One Man's Perspective

3 Years Later, DSLR Video, One Man's Perspective | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"We have arrived on the 3 year anniversary of DSLR cameras that also have the ability to shoot High Definition video. The flexibility of having a small and inexpensive camera with fantastic battery life that also can use interchangeable lenses has captivated consumers, professionals, and camera manufacturers around the world. Personally I've used these cameras to shoot everything from live events to motion pictures for feature films. With a slew of new cameras coming out in the next few months I find myself looking back at what has worked and what hasn't. I've gone through a whole lot of headaches, frustration, and problem solving to get the material up to snuff for the big screen and dealing with the camera system's "quirks". With this particular article I'd like to share some of my experiences and what I've learned along the way."

Canon DSLRs: some of the best picture profiles out there

Canon DSLRs: some of the best picture profiles out there | Photography Gear News | Scoop.it

"With the introduction of the new Cinema Picture Profile, I wanted to do a quick post on MY favorite picture styles as well as how to use/install them. Picture Profiles/Styles (PP) are meant to optimize the dynamic range in the image. One of the hardest parts about them though is picking the right one for the right job. I find that it all depends on shooting conditions and final output.

For the longest time, I had no idea that you could load PP’s onto your camera that were not pre-loaded. I also did not really think that the results would be much different. Wow, was I ever wrong!

For some shooting conditions, I find that some of the PP’s perform worse than others. At any given time, I will have three PP’s loaded on my camera to switch between.

Final output also determines which PP I will be using. For all projects that I am producing, I always shoot the flattest image I can get. However, when shooting for others, if the turn around time does not allow for colour timing/correction, I will shoot less flat (typically neutral).

Now you ask, why is a flat profile important?"

When the minimalistic approach yields big results - Canon 5Dtips.com

We talk a lot about gear on this blog: tripods, rigs, lens, follow focus, etc… We take for granted that you need all of these to create anything that looks remotely professional. After all, if you dont have a super stable and sharp image, your end product can’t be good.
Well, Greg Watermann proves us wrong. Look at his coverage of the band Scars on Broadway...
