PeterboroughLibDems's insight:

Peterborough City Council have submitted proposals to develop 900 acres of land that is for prime agricultural use for the installation of nine wind turbines and five hundred thousand solar panels at a cost of £331 million. This figure is made up of £141 million in installation costs providing the capacity to provide sufficient power for 22,000 households and £190 million in loan interest payments.

Over a 25-year period it is forecast that the local authority will make a profit of around £31 million but, if further turbines were added at a future date profits could increase to £100 million.

The council submitted a formal planning application on 19th December 2012 and will no doubt be keen to progress matters quickly to benefit from current subsidy levels

However, 250 acres of this land, that is council owned, has been rented and farmed by a Mr Harris for the past 35 years so he is unhappy with the situation as he had intended to continue farming until age 65 and then hand over the reins to his son in 6 years time.  Apparently, the council will make an offer of compensation to the farmers affected and try to find them alternative land to farm.

What are Peterborough City Council doing about future flooding in our City?

What are Peterborough City Council doing about future flooding in our City? | Peterborough City Council News | Scoop.it

* Of the 5,000 properties damaged in the extreme weather events of this summer and autumn, more than half were hit not by overflowing rivers but by surface water!

* The sheer volume of rain overwhelmed ageing sewage and drainage systems resulting in unprecedented levels of flooding in communities previously considered immune.

* The number of properties at risk of flooding expected to quadruple in the next 20 years, according to the Committee on Climate Change, experts warned this week that "...no home is now without risk."

* It has been estimated the 294 local schemes submitted to the Environment Agency for consideration in 2010 are yet to be given the go-ahead.

* Defra insists the total reduction over the four -year period is only six per cent and that it is committed to spending £2.17bn up until 2015 to protect businesses.

A Defra spokeswoman said: "The new approach is expected to allow up to a third more schemes to go ahead and enable us to exceed our goal to better protect 145,000 homes by 2015."

Traveller problems continue on industrial estate - "Another result of Tory Council's failure 2 provide transit sites" | Peterborough City Council News | Scoop.it

Several years ago the Tory controlled City Council in Peterborough were urged - alongside other councils in Cambridgeshire - to look at providing additional transit sites for the traveller community - as there were (and are) insufficient sites and amenities.

Instead of taking action and showing due care and planning - they instead went for a headline grabbing attitude, claiming that they would not be forced to pay for additional transit sites - well time has told...... the Tory councillor Cllr Mark Collins gavce out most of the HOT AIR at the time - is NO LONGER a councillor and does not EVEN live in the city!

So please, do not focus your attention on the Traveller Community - ask the Toffy Nosed Tories @ the Town Hall why they haven't managed to help the traveller community to date?

According to the article in the Telegraph, "The Mayor of Peterborough councillor George Simons showed his support for ending tax-dodging both in the UK and abroad when the Tax Justice Bus arrived in the city....."

But we wonder how many city councillors will this initiative catch? WHAT DO WE MEAN? A: We understand that some Peterborough City Councillors claim back the tax they pay on their salaries for things like paper, office equipment, petrol, clothes, pens..... yuo get the picture.

We've EVEN heard that the amounts they get back can be up hundreds, perhaps even THOUSANDS?? But which ones do this? A: We guess its the ones who can AFFORD to pay for an accountant! :)

For example, if the average annual reimbursement is £800, and the fact that tyheir are 57 councillors, then the amount of tax they claim back could be as much as £45k a year!

According to the TORY controlled Peterborough City Council:

Following a number of successful meetings the city council and the football club have agreed to a set of terms and conditions which will allow both parties to forge ahead with a major redevelopment at the football ground.

As a result, both organisations are now in a position to put together a timetable for the programme of works. It is hoped that further details about this schedule can be announced in October.

Negotiations have concluded that the council will enter into a new long-term lease with the football club which allows it to take ownership of the ground in the future. The council has agreed to support the football club in its lobbying around the Safe Standing Initiative to persuade the Government to look seriously at the rail seat option.

Peterboro Social Services. Judge: "a shocking situation" Tory Cllr Scott: service ‘..is getting better’ #WHoToBelieve? | Peterborough City Council News | Scoop.it

Judge Enright said one room had rubbish strewn on the floor and no lighting, and the other was filled with rubbish and smelling of excrement.

There were also discarded alcohol bottles and cans in the house and rotting food in the kitchen.

He said the three had been referred to a paediatrician by social workers in August.

Despite doctors finding evidence of “ongoing neglect”, including ringworm and scars and bruises on the youngest child for which the mother could not explain, the children were still not removed.

Judge Enright told Peterborough Crown Court that a paediatrician’s report should have given grounds for “immediate action”.

He said: “There was no doubt social services owed these children a duty of care and had social services acted properly these matters might have been nipped in the bud.

“Social services could and should have sought a court order to get access to these children.”

He added: “It’s a shocking situation.”

This is merely the latest criticism of the activities of the children’s services department from this time

£2.8 million will have 2 be saved through cuts 2 those of working age, 18 to 64 say TORIES! | Peterborough City Council News | Scoop.it

Peterborough residents of working age could end up paying hundreds of pounds extra each year as they bear the brunt of massive cuts which could see council tax benefits slashed by up to 44 per cent.

Major reforms of the council tax benefit system will see responsibility for the setting and administration of benefits devolved from the Government to local authorities, including Peterborough City Council, from April 1 next year.

However, this comes with a 10 per cent reduction in the amount of cash the city is given for council tax benefits, which could potentially come to £2.8 million.

But with pensioners protected from any cuts to their benefits, the £2.8 million will have to be saved through cuts to those of working age, 18 to 64.
