Aaron Nganeko's curator insight, March 12, 2014 10:28 AM

The PE Shake is made up of 100 PE warm-up games that are easy to set up with minimal equipment.
Each time you shake the application a new random warm-up game appears. All games are suited to both primary and secondary school students.

This app is great for students to use; as they can choose which game they want to warm up to in their PE class. It is also a fun tool for teachers who are stuck for warm-up
activities. This app can also be used as a reward for good work, where students get the chance to shake and see what reward game they will be playing or as time filler at the start or end of a day.

The PE Shake has been designed in a fun to use way for teachers and students. A great way to mix up each lesson with a new warm up game the students will love.

Aaron Nganeko's curator insight, March 12, 2014 10:07 AM

TGfU Games PE was developed to help physical and health education professionals incorporate fun in lessons aimed at keeping children active. TGfU Games PE combines technology, education, and fun to create an environment where children enjoy learning.

KEY FEATURES
•Comprehensive Collection of Games
TGfU Games PE includes more than 200 games to keep children active!

Wide Variety of Skill Levels
The games available in TGfU Games PE are targeted for children in kindergarten to sixth grade; an age group that is very receptive to the TGfU model.

•Broad Categories of Games and Activities
The application includes 4 categories of games and activities that are based on the TGfU curriculum model: Invasion & Territorial, Net & Wall, Striking & Fielding, and Target. Pursuit & Evade category is also included as an additional game category that is popular among youth.

The Australian Curriculum: Health & Physical Education (DRAFT) states that at the ages of 6-8 "students need to be provided with opportunities to play a range of minor games and develop an understanding of how to apply basic rules... They will develop the knowledge and skills needed to be able to transfer and adapt what they have learnt in a game or movement activity to other similar contexts.".

A fabulous application I have found that aids this statement is the Teaching games for understanding (TGfU) which is available on Android and Apple. Generally the first question that is commonly asked when students start learning the skills for a certain sport is "when are we going to play a game?' TGfU is a somewhat contemporary idea to teaching which uses games as the core of the lesson. This application has the age appropriate bracket which aids in the process of incorporating essential tactical structures which are adapted to cater for different ages within the lesson. This application would be fantastic for those that are relief teaching in the HPE sector as it has the game broken down into year levels and skill subsets. Attached is a screen shot of an example of a game.

In keeping in line with the integration of Technologies and Health and Physical Education, the Draft Australian Curriculum: Technologies (2013) advises that a “comprehensive education in Technologies provides opportunities for students to progress from creative and directed play through to the consolidation of knowledge, understanding and skills.” By utilising the TGfU approach within HPE we are supporting this assertion by allowing the students to attain skills within a realistic and pleasant environment.

Here are some Physical Education expert’s thoughts on this application:

The Physical Educator gives it a 9/10 and states “I have used the app extensively since its release and it has been a huge help for me. Especially in those times when I am drawing a mental blank as to new activities and games to do with my class. It was also perfect when I unexpectedly was off work for a week with a medical issue. I directed the substitute teacher i(non PE trained) in the direction of the app and she was able to easily find games to play with the classes.”

David T gives it 5/5 stars and writes “I found this to be a great app for finding fun and easy-to-teach games and activities for different. This is a must-have app for PE teachers.”

The Australian Curriculum v6.0 Health and Physical Education Foundation to Year 10 Curriculum by rows

Aaron Nganeko's curator insight, June 9, 2014 9:05 AM

This documents guides me as a teaching professional. It outlines all the fundamental elements that I need to teach in order for students to gain knoweldge and understanding about their Health and Physical Education.

Using this document as well as the Technologies curriculum will help me to provide enriched lessons that relate to real life situations.

Health and Physical Education is a vital element within the Australian Curriculum. Teachers facilitate learning through the content within this document that enables students to: “enhance their own and others’ health, safety, wellbeing and physical activity participation in varied and changing contexts”. (ACARA,  2013).

The Health and Physical Education Curriculum documents are aligned with the Technologies Curriculum because they both include a critical inquiry approach that enables students to: “engage in critical inquiry processes that assist students in researching, analysing, applying and appraising knowledge in health and movement fields.” Whilst the Technologies curriculum aims to: “investigate, design, plan, manage, create and evaluate solutions”. (ACARA, 2013).
