Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning

Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"The report, Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning, examines the support that educators and schools will require to implement genuine teaching practices that are personalized for each student. Digital learning, the report argues, can be a major strategy for enabling teachers to meet varied students’ needs while also supporting necessary cultural shifts in teaching.

According to the report, learner-centered instruction is personalized, rigorous, and based on college- and career-ready expectations. It is also collaborative, relevant, and flexible, with learning taking place anytime or anywhere. A true shift to a learner-centered environment powered by effective technology requires a strong school culture that embodies, encourages, and focuses on the needs of each student, the report argues. Specifically, Culture Shift maintains that the integration of technology and digital learning, school leadership, and changes in the teaching profession are critical to the transition to this new culture."

Finding Coherence with RtI and Personalized Learning

Finding Coherence with RtI and Personalized Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

One of the constant challenges facing educators is to find coherence in the work we are doing. We need to understand how our efforts relate to and support each other in pursuit of student learning.

Jim Rickabaugh is the Director of Institute @ CESA #1 in Wisconsin. "The relationship between efforts to implement Response to Intervention (RtI) systems and our work to personalize learning offers a good example of this dilemma."

Rickabaugh explains ahow a split screen approach to leadership applies here. "The framework of a personalized learning approach enables educators to position intervention to occur as soon as the learner needs it. As a result, success is designed in from the beginning and learners are less likely to experience the loss of confidence that too often accompanies repeated failure to learn in the current system."

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) Version One chart needed to be updated. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received after posting our first version of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage?

We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version two. Some districts shared with us that our version one was going to be their foundation of their personalized learning initiative. We wanted to refine it so it was clear, consistent, and easily understood. We went to work to update the stages for them and anyone else moving to a personalized learning environment.

Please feel free to download version two and let us know how it supports your transformation to personalizing learning.

I am in Wisconsin and we are part of CESA 1 NxGL. I team teach with 42 kindergarten kids and we are using personalized learning. We are working through the tangles of being able to personalize with kids who are just learning to read, write and compute. It has always been a struggle to be able to differentiate the difference between true personalized learning vs. differentiation and individualization. You have done a beautiful job of creating a chart that makes this clearer for all stakeholders. This chart will be useful for helping colleagues, administration and parents see the true definition of personalized learning and the potential that it holds.

Personalizing Learning in 2012-The Student & Parent Point of View

Personalizing Learning in 2012-The Student & Parent Point of View | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Jackie Gerstein shares in her blog "Speak Up Report:  Mapping a Personalized Journey".  The report released by Project Tomorrow supports how and why technology can support personalized learning.

"What follows is an Infographic and key findings of Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey – K-12 Students and Parents Connects the Dots with Digital Learning"

"Students are already seeking out ways to personalize their learning. Looking to address what they perceive as deficiencies in classroom experiences, students are turning to online classes to study topics that pique their intellectual curiosity, to message and discussion boards to explore new ideas about their world, or to online collaboration tools to share their expertise with other students they don’t even know. Their experience with seeking out their own personalized learning experiences has changed their overall expectations for their education, and not just for the use of technology.

"These students have an intrinsic understanding that like so many other aspects of their lives, personalization is the key to their own greater engagement in the learning process. So, even while students have turned to personalized learning on their own time, in their own way, why is it that this revolution of technology that has enabled personalization not also penetrated our classrooms? Why is it that we are for the most part still educating our children with a model that perpetuates the fallacy of one size fits all? Why is it that technology has transformed the way we shop, bank and interact with each other and not yet had the same impact on teaching and learning, at least as education stands today?"

UDL and Transforming Learning: Stephen Petrucci

UDL and Transforming Learning: Stephen Petrucci | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

I had the honor of interviewing Stephen Petrucci who is the first British Columbia administrator that discussed UDL in relation to a personalized learning environment.  Stephen shares his vision of personalized learning and what steps have been taken in his schools where he is the Director of Instruction in School District 60 - Fort St. John, BC.

"What is your vision of personalizing learning?

Personalizing learning is education through the eyes and brain of the individual learner. This entails building a relationship with the learner and creating a profile that reveals personal interests, strengths and prior learning, as well as academic needs. It involves determining and getting a learner’s input on how they learn best, using a framework such as UDL to collaboratively design instruction and finally, employing the vehicles of technology and the arts to drive that personal learning forward."

Thank you Stephen, a BC thought leader, for your vision and insight into persoanlized learning!

Personalized Learning @ Colorado Springs SD11

Personalized Learning @ Colorado Springs SD11 | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

I had the opportunity to interview Greg Wilborn, Personalized Learning Coordinator at Colorado Springs who shared their journey to move to personalizing learning for all learners.

Here is  small excerpt from a thought-provoking interview.

Q. Why personalize learning?

"Because we finally CAN!

For the first time in our history, we have the tools and access to resources to allow individual learners the flexibility and freedom to pursue an education centered around their own interests and aptitudes. Educators and philosophers for centuries have yearned for education that is learner centered and molded by the learner as opposed to the factory system. While the desire has been there, the methods have been shackled by the restrictions of human interaction and delivery methods. There is only so much that can be personalized with one facilitator, 20 to 40 learners, and print media and production methods.

Personalized learning allows learners to have a wide choice of what they learn, how they learn, when, where, and how they demonstrate their learning."

Making Personalized Learning a Reality

Making Personalized Learning a Reality | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, and SLC Board Member introduces the vision of the SLC, Shared Learning Collaborative, and how they plan to support personalized learning.

"Imagine student information from multiple systems and databases being pulled together in one place, so a teacher can track each students’ progress on everything they need to learn, and provide individualized “learning maps” to help guide their personalized learning plans. And after identifying what each student needs to learn, imagine that teacher being able to easily search for just the right lesson

To help make this vision possible, the SLC – a non-profit alliance – is building a set of technology services that will allow states and districts to safely and securely provide teachers with the instructional data and tools they need, to help make personalized learning a reality for all of their students."

Personalized Learning - A Student Perspective

Personalized Learning - A Student Perspective | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Gillian Locke, a senior at Kettle Moraine School Districts’ KM Global Charter School is a guest blogger this week @ CESA#1. Gillian is in a personalized learning environment at KM Global and spoke eloquently about her experiences when she was one of the panelists at CESA#1 Youth Summit in March.  Here are some of her thoughts about personalized learning:

"Unlike most seniors in high school, I have the freedom to choose what I want to do when I wake up each morning. I am not limited to an 8 hour bell schedule like my peers, nor does my learning stop when I drive off the high school parking lot at 2:30 pm. I don’t have to just do homework in the evenings, and don’t even have to go to classes during the day. Being a part of Kettle Moraine’s new charter school KM Global allows me to direct my learning on my own.

Because I have so many options, and different formats for learning, I have become a lot more in tune with how I learn best."

"When each learner with their teacher understands how they learn best, they become more involved in the learning process. The teacher can design a supportive learning environment that allows for each student to personalize how they access and engage with the content as well as how they demonstrate their understanding.

Personalizing your classroom learning environment by giving students a voice and a choice helps you connect with student interest and passions, motivating them to explore topics and demonstrate understanding in a way that is most relevant to their experience. This makes classroom learning feel more relevant, connecting them to school and connecting school to their passions."
