nmxpersonaltraining's insight:
Is fasting really good for you?
There are essentially three kinds of fasting, in my opinion. One is where you give up certain types of food. Another is where you severely limit you calorie intake and the other is where you don't drink or eat from sunrise to set. Provided that good food is eaten when it is eaten you will see a health benefit anyway. The type of fasting I do is the last one where I do not eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. The research on this sparse as the amount of time fasted varies from year to year and region to region. Also, most fasting people stuff themselves with very unhealthy food when do break their fast undoing the benefits of the fast.
Fasting improves self control, which is so lacking in most of our lives. It also calms the immune system, thus improves allergy symptoms. Provided you eat properly, you could also lose a few pounds. At the end of the day, it is about discipline. As someone who fasts for 30 days every year, from sunrise to sunset, it definitely allows me to improve and practise self discipline which I believe is most important when you want to achieve anything in life.

nmxpersonaltraining's insight:

Do we really need a Personal Trainer?

Long are the days when people used to believe that Personal Trainers are only for the rich and having one is a luxury and a want not a need. As the calibre of trainers improve, we are beginning to blur the difference between a top Personal Trainer and a Physiotherapist. However, there are still a few who truly believe that the trainers "give" you the results you want. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. Ofcourse, a good trainer can guide you towards an appropriate exercise for your body, s/he can motivate you, s/he can tie you down to a financial commitment so you must exercise, s/he can indeed coach you to lead a healthier lifestyle. But the onus is on you ultimately.

How many times have you heard "weight loss starts in the kitchen"? This is the most boring yet resounding truth. If you are aiming for fat loss, weight gain or any other goal, food is where it is at. There are a lot of conflicting information out there regarding a good diet but the research has overwhelmingly have admitted that fat does not make you fat, carbohydrates do! More on this on another article! A trainer can guide towards a good diet but s/he will not be with you 24/7 and you need to make the ultimate decision. A whole exercise session can be undone due to a few mouthfuls of the wrong food.

Next, sleep! A trainer can make you tired so you will sleep but you know what I mean! Resting is when the body heals and adapts. If you do not sleep the body cannot utilise the changes you are making. You can google research on sleep deprivation but trust me when I say you need sleep and a trainer cannot be responsible for that!

Thirdly, stress! An amazing research on stress (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcGyVTAoXEU) shows that HOW you perceive stress has a HUGE impact on your health. If you become panciky and worrisome due to stress your body will react negatively. However, if you think of stress as a challenge to overcome your body will release completely different hormones. Do check out the above link to the TEDx lecture. A trainer cannot help you take stress out of your life albeit s/he can be the lending ear. The onus again is on you.

So, the bad news is that YOU need to change your diet, YOU need to sleep, YOU need to rethink stress. The good news is that after all that a trainer can be truly useful to you! S/he can guide you surely, but you are the driver. You know your body and life better than the trainer. You need to respect what you have and work with that to reach your goal. And trust me, you will reach it.

nmxpersonaltraining's insight:

My client was researching benefits of fasting and told me she thought it was difficult to fast. I said it is dependent on intention.

It is Ramadan, and I am fasting. My intention is to do with my faith.

However it is the veracity of the intention that makes fasting so easy for me

If you want to achieve something, it becomes easier when the intention is clear. Your thinking and actions change. It all starts with a pure and precise intention!

To know what the benefits of fasting are stay tuned!
