Wouldn't it be fun to create a challenge for students using digital storytelling tools? How about a book trailer contest, and for each different tool a student uses she gets an entry? Or what about using one tool in different ways? For example, challenge students to use only Storybird to create book trailers for various genres? (Can you make a horror book trailer in Storybird?) Additional tools that would be great for this: Animoto, Powtoon, WeVideo...but the idea is to have them try several concurrently. Get them thinking: which ones were best for the task? Which did they struggle with? Which would they use again? This is all part of developing that digital tool box we want them to have handy for any projects teachers assign, or for exploring their own creativity!

Each year, I share my thoughts on trends that will impact your career success. Here is part 1 of my trends for 2017 – the death of text.

OK, maybe not the death, but we’re definitely seeing a rapid replacement of the alphabet’s 26 letters, which are being nudged out by pictures – both still and moving. These trends put the spotlight on the impact of multimedia and the speed at which we are moving from text to photos and video. Build your brand in 2017 by providing a richer visual experience for your brand community. Incorporate multimedia into your communications.

Change is a constant these days and only speeding up. So how do you weather change, and experience positive business results through the process?

More and more business leaders and researchers are pointing to Emotional Intelligence (EQ) as the key. What is less recognized is how storytelling plays a significant role in developing EQ and going through the process of any kind of change successfully.

This post shares the 3 essential ways EQ is important during change efforts. For each of these 3, one powerful method to use is storytelling -- because all change is storytelling via conversations. It's a real way to operationalize the 3 ways EQ works during change:

  • Storytelling helps access and practice EQ in real time in real work.
  • Storytelling generates social awareness where people can become more comfortable with the new realities via compassion and empathy.
  • Storytelling sets up the collaborative co-creation of successful change because storytelling itself is a co-created experience.

There are many more great points this article makes about EQ and change that every leader needs to know about. Enjoy!

Being able to listen with focus and empathy is key, whereby those in our care feel supported and heard. In a world where everyone is so busy and time often seems to be the commodity that we have the least of, this diagram really serves to remind us that we need to listen constructively, suggest skilfully and try to understand the emotion of those we are engaging with in all that we do. Purposeful listening rather than just hearing is key.

Lisa Evans 's curator insight, November 6, 2016 7:23 AM
As a fellow introvert and a professional speaker I found this interesting and I could relate to much of it, particularly when I was new on my public speaking journey. However, I disagree with the point Hannah makes about the energy the speaker picks up from the audience. She says " Extrovert presenters get their energy from their audience – remember they thrive on that kind of stimulation – but that’s really overwhelming for an introvert".

Regardless of your style introvert or extravert, to be an effective speaker you must be in tune with your audience. That includes reading theri cues, watching their body language and using their energy as instant feedback.  I have never found this to be overwhelming but all part of being in the audience-centred zone that is required of me to make a meanigful connection.
