Read through some insights on the art of going, based off of some of our own experiences trying to create viral videos.

If you've ever put content on the internet, then you've probably felt that fleeting moment of anticipation that comes when your content goes live. Your heart beats a bit faster as you watch the video upload or the article publish. Will people like it? Could I have improved it in some way? Who should I share it with first? Will it go viral?

As someone who's been professionally putting content on the internet for the last few years, I've seen my fair share of it fall flat. But every once in a while, everything lines up and a piece of content takes off, racking up views as it races across the internet. In this article, I'm going to look at a few videos that I've been a part of at HubSpot, talk about how they performed and why, and then dive into some takeaways that'll help you get on the road to creating an awesome viral video for your company.

A Couple Notes on "Going Viral"

First of all, I think it's good we agree on a definition of virality, just for the sake of working off the same definition throughout this post. When I talk about a piece of content going viral, it doesn't necessarily mean it's achieving views in the millions. It's more about achieving an extremely high volume of views -- even if it's not in the hundreds of millions -- in an incredibly short amount of time. More on that in the next section, though.

Also, this post will focus on viral videos, though keep in mind any piece of content can go viral: Blog posts, infographics, images on social media, you name it.

7. Be Transparent - HONESTY always wins in the end. 

8. Keep Your Promises & Only make keepable ones.

9. Customer is always RIGHT.

10. Say THANK YOU and be KIND.

These are great and I would add:

1. Know YOURSELF, be consistent and true.
2. Have FUN (fun is contagious).

3. LOVE what you do (passion is contagious).

4. LOVE who you do it with (or fake it until you make it).

5. Stay Calm, Carry On

6. Change the World

7. Share and then SHARE some More.

8. Align your company to Stengel's Brand Ideals.

Confessions of A Director of Ecommerce
I've spent the last few years trying to share as many "secrets" as I learned as a Director of Ecommerce. I don't run an ecommerce website anymore so can afford to be generous (lol). 

One of my pet peeves was directing the eye sight line of people in our images. I wanted the eyes pointed at something that mattered. People follow the eye line of those they are looking at. We had three tactics:

1. Gaze straight at visitor - promotes engagement.

2. Gaze directly at a Call To Action - promotes clicks.

3. Gaze at other people in same picture - promotes connection.

 

 We used #1 for pages with broad reach such as our homepage and category top-level pages. 

We used #2 in 4Q on the home page and bending the sight lines of any people in images on a product page works well (our product pages tended to make the PRODUCTS the heroes so few people). 

We used #3 when connection was one of the benefits of a product. If you sell wine, travel or family cars you may want to have pictures of people looking at each other. I would never ONLY have this picture on a webpage since it can make the viewer feel left out. 

The natural companion to the "connection" picture is a picture of a single person gazing out at the viewer. This says, "Yes, we see you, value your visit and want to be friends". 


Websites communicate SO MUCH in covert ways. Balancing what you say with one image such as the people looking at each other with another image to promote engagement is the game you play, the inside baseball "secrets" that separate teams capable of making millions in profits online from those who won't and wonder why :).M

3 Things You Can't Know, Until You Know
Apparently I've entered that "professor emeritus" space that befalls all Ecommerce Directors as they age (lol). Before I link off into the sunset here are three things I could have told you back when I was an Ecom director only on pain of death (yours or mine :). 

1.  Internet Marketing Isn't What You think
I wrote a piece about how misinformed most people are about what Internet marketing IS:

Internet marketing is the extension, amplification and feedback loop every marketer depends on. For every moment you obsess about look and feel you lose money because THEY (your customers) will tell you everything you need to know if you only LISTEN. 

Oh, and make sure you LISTEN to Google too. Good to do what the KING tells you to do WHEN she tells you too. 

2. Everything Balances and Dances Until There Is A Wobble
Metrics are tied to each other. When your traffic goes up chances are your bounce rate will inch up too. When your time on site goes up because you've created great gamification or video marketing your SEO gets easier, you generate more Facebook LIKES and life is good. 

Then there is a wobble. 

Wobbles are inevitable so staying calm and carrying on no matter how severe the wobble is the only way to be an Internet marketer (otherwise you end up jumping off the roof LOL). 

Wobbles can come from Google, competitors or the war in Iraq. Death, taxes and that there will be costly wobbles in your Internet marketing future are life's new immutable truths. Your Internet marketing will dance again after a period of rehab and if you stay calm and carry on. 

3. The Secret Is There Is No Secret
I spent valuable TIME trying to find the FREE LUNCH of Internet marketing, the silver bullet, the one action that would solve all problems. Some may be able to do so, but someone wins the lottery too that doesn't mean it makes statistical SENSE (lol). 

Your best Internet marketing bet is to:

* DO THE WORK.

* LISTEN to the responses.
* Rinse and Repeat. 

The MAGIC of life and Internet marketing is in the JOURNEY not the destination no matter how rich it makes you. In the end your money goes into a trust or to your children, so what matters is what is happening NOW, this MOMENT.


If you are doing the work, no matter how "bad" you think it is, you are ahead of many. If you LISTEN you are ahead of more and if you relentlessly rinse and repeat you will be at the far right of Internet marketing's bell curve. 

Good luck to all the Supermen and Superwomen out there thinking that surely their head will explode if they have to learn one more thing (it won't) and never trusting they are really THERE (they are).


You NEVER need anything MORE than what you have as you read this. You are fully armed and ready right NOW to change the world, to change YOU. 

Do the work. Listen. Rinse and Repeat.
