Rodney - Fuel Pump Attendant | People & Their Workplaces & OHS | Scoop.it

Rodney works at a local fuel station as an attendant, it is his job to serve customers and to maintain that all the equipment is in working order.

Jess Kopp's insight:

-          Environment
Working at a petrol station Rodney is subjected to fumes from petrol and diesel, this can lead to long term health problems if the right procedures are followed. Being in such a close proximity to the fuel pumps the shop section needs to have proper ventilation in order for any fumes to escape instead sitting around in the air.

-          Explosions
There also needs to be strict rules in place such as no phones, no smoking and turning all car engines off, by following these rules the risk of explosions of the fuel pumps and gas bottles.

-          Moving Vehicles
It is a part of Rodney’s job to ensure that all lanes of the fuel station are cleared in  order to prevent any accidents caused by motor vehicles coming and leaving the station, and to make sure that all pedestrians and his colleagues are safe and that there is no chance of any injuries being caused by the coming and going of customers.

Shane works as part of a retail team for a company that deals with car parts and accessories. The business is in its own building on one of the main roads of the town. Shane’s job requires him to work with his team and with the customers in order to supply great customer service.

Jess Kopp's insight:

There are multiple safety aspects that needs to  be considered while he is working these include:

-          Chemicals
Shane is required to handle and stock various chemicals that are used for the upkeep of cars and also removing and storing the chemicals when they need to be disposed of, these can include various oils and more importantly old car batteries which can leak acid. There are many safety procedures in place most of them dealing with the cleaning up of any spills and how to dispose of the chemicals and old car batteries in the proper manner to protect the employees as well as the environment.

-          Environment
There are many problems in Shane’s working environment that are related to OHS, the space he has to work in is the biggest problem, the shelves the products are placed on are tall and are placed close together in order to increase the amount of product that can be

displayed but this decrease the amount of space between the shelves and that Shane has to work in.

-           Handling of Stock

The handling of stock can be dangerous if the proper OHS procedures are not followed, the procedures are in place to prevent injuries. At Shane’s workplace there are many heavy boxes and stock that have to be lifted, there are weight restrictions in place so that if a piece of stock is over a certain weight then two people are required to lift it. There is also the possible problem of stock falling off shelves if they are over stacked, to prevent this from happening there are also weight limits and size limits to prevent over sized and heavy items from falling off the shelves on to the employees and customers.

Glenn - Workshop Manager

Glenn - Workshop Manager | People & Their Workplaces & OHS | Scoop.it

Glenn works as a workshop manager for one of the local tyre shops, it is his job to oversee the workers and the machines that are involved in the workshop.

Jess Kopp's insight:

There are the following OHS related issues in Glenn's workplace:

-          Environment
The workshop Glenn oversees is an open workshop which means it is affected by the weather, this means that there needs to be a ventilation system in place to move the air through and reduce the heat as well as having draining system so that there is a place for all the water to go when it rains and the water that comes in off the cars has a place to drain to.

-          Vehicles
Glenn needs to have protective measures in place so that his workers are safe in the instance that a car slips off the jacks or stands, and from the cars that move through the workplace. This means proper procedures for placing cars up on stands and having his staff aware of what is happening around them.

-           Equipment
As part of his job Glenn needs to ensure that his staff are wearing the appropriate protective gear while working with some of the machines in the workplace, it is also his job to be aware if there is a problem with the machines so that they can be fixed before someone uses it and is harmed.

Fiona - Pamphlet Area Representative

Fiona - Pamphlet Area Representative | People & Their Workplaces & OHS | Scoop.it

Fiona works as an area representative for a local pamphlet delivery service; it is her job to ensure that pamphlets are distributed to the mail boxes in her areas.

Jess Kopp's insight:

There many OHS components that need to be addressed in this particular workplace:

-          Environment
Fiona’s place of business is a shed in an industrial area. Proper ventilation is a need for working in an industrial area, Fiona’s place of work is surrounded by three different mechanics and a laundry service, so it is essential that there is proper ventilation to reduce the amount of air pollution, such as chemicals, dust and noise, in her shed. Another reason why proper ventilation is necessary is to reduce the temperature inside of the shed to make is possible for Fiona to work during the day without having to work in extreme heat.

-          Protective Shoes
It is important for Fiona and people who enter the shed to be wearing protective shoes, as there are many hazards present, there is the possibility of dropping a bundle of pamphlets onto their feet as well as many tripping hazards. The main reason for protective shoes is to reduced the amount of damage that can be caused, since the pamphlets are delivered to Fiona on large wooden pallets, that have splinters and old nails protruding on them, it would be easy to trip and have a splinter or nail go through their feet which can lead to infection.

-           Fire Hazards
Since it is Fiona’s job to deal with pamphlets, she also has to deal with fire prevention methods as the paper and the ink can be highly flammable, since there is the threat of fire damage Fiona is required to have both a fire extinguisher and fire blanket on the premises in the event that a fire occurs so that it is able to be extinguished before it is able to spread.

Jayden - Kitchen Hand/ Chef

Jayden - Kitchen Hand/ Chef | People & Their Workplaces & OHS | Scoop.it

Jayden is one of the junior kitchen hands at one of the local take away business as well as learning to become a chef. The take away shop is situated in the food court of the main shopping centre in town, and Jayden is required to work with a small group of staff and his main jobs include cooking pizzas, food preparation, serving customers and general kitchen duties.

Jess Kopp's insight:

There are multiple safety aspects that Jayden needs to considered while he is working these include:

-          Sharp Instruments
In the kitchen there are multiple sharp instruments including various knives, pizza cutters, graters, as well as the possibility of broken glass. There are procedures in place and general common sense that help reduce the risk of injury, these include always cutting and holding the knife downwards, storing the knives in a vertical position so that the handles are always visible, cleaning up broken glass and removing glass with sharp edges. General common sense is to watch what you are doing at the task at hand to ensure that there is little to no risk at cutting any fingers.

-          Hot Surfaces
Throughout Jayden’s work environment there are plenty of extremely hot surfaces including the ovens and grill in the kitchen and the hot boxes and coffee machine out in the front section of the shop. These surfaces can produce burns, there are protective surfaces around the hottest parts of these machines but it is still possible for Jayden to easily burn his hand or arm, the easiest way to prevent getting burnt is to take care will working around or on these machines or areas.

-          Environment
The takeaway shop is reliant of the shopping centres air conditioning and ventilation, however in the kitchen with the grill and the ovens the temperature can get to be higher than the average work place, this can lead to dehydration and other related problems such as headaches. The only way that it is possible to prevent dehydration is to have a drink on hand and keep drinking throughout the shift and to take small breaks from the environment.

-           Spills
Working in a busy takeaway shop it is easy for something to get spilt on the floor, spills are a dangerous hazard especially with a lot of hot surfaces around. To prevent from someone slipping over on a spill it is a general procedure to clean up the spill immediately or when Jayden is unable to clean the spill up himself because he is busy cooking it is his responsibility to ask a colleague to clean it for him.
