A bonus scheme can be an excellent way of incentivising  staff, especially those involved in sales. However, employers really do have to think very seriously about the wording they use.

 

To take just one example, would you calculate bonus on turnover or profit ? I know which I would choose. We are always happy to help

I am more concerned about whether the employer really has a clear idea of why he is conducting appraisals.

This really is a question that I have put to employers & received an answer along the lines of "because we think we should"
I would argue that unless you know what you want from the process, you are probably wasting management time.
