Incubator of Innovations - The New Indian Express | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

At the root of all innovation is curiosity, a tinkering spirit and an ‘urge to fix something’. There are too many hackathons focusing on contests, hiring events or start-ups but none on hacking because its ‘fun’,” says Venky Goteti (40), co-founder, Devthon. “At the heart of all innovation is the culture of hacking and exploration. We want to encourage this culture,” he explains.

Chomsky: Putting the Eco Back in Economy - Huffington Post

Chomsky: Putting the Eco Back in Economy - Huffington Post | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The prefix "eco" connotes the natural system. Ecology is defined as the study of the relationships between living things and the resources they need for survival. The suffix, "-nomy," means distribution, arrangement, and management. It follows thateconomy is broadly defined as the management of resources by living things to ensure their survival. Indeed, the old familiar "home economics" classes taught this careful use of money and resources.

Portland’s Sharing Economy: Borrowing, Swapping and Sharing

Portland’s Sharing Economy: Borrowing, Swapping and Sharing | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In a shift away from the country’s once hyper-consumptive ways, many Portlanders have been discovering how to participate in a local, and more resourceful, sharing economy. Based on models of collaborative consumption, in which owning becomes less necessary, our innovative and community-minded citizenry has expanded an economy centered around bartering, borrowing and sharing.

Seedbombing: applying the principles of permaculture to finance | Ecology Building Society

Seedbombing: applying the principles of permaculture to finance | Ecology Building Society | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Finance, even in its most high-tech formulations, is rooted in ecological systems. A high-frequency trading hedge fund, for example, relies on electricity created by burning fossilised organic matter. It relies on employees, surviving via agricultural systems. It trades in company shares, given value by the actions of those companies’ employees using assets (like computers and telecommunications systems) that are all dependent – at some level – on mining, forestry, and other extractive industries.

Sharing in America: Sharing Economy Websites | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The sharing economy is sweeping America by storm .  Rather than purchasing something you would rarely use, the sharing economy involves collaborative consumption to get the same job done.  Some of these transactions include barter, some a monetary transaction, and others are entirely free.  Below we take a look at some very popular categories, some websites in each category, and our opinions on the picks.

▶ DIY Interactive 3D Assembly Manual - YouTube

In this video, software and the internet are used to make production and design knowledge more accessible. The manual in this example was created on the basis of the 3D CAD model, which was also used in the engineering phase. This model can be used by documentation designers to make different types of 3D CAD user manuals. Once the 3D CAD manual is finished, it is published on a free database, ready to be downloaded. It grants the user access to complex industrial knowledge, technical drawings, LCA reports and much more. The manual can easily be downloaded onto smart phones, tablets or PCs. Its easy accessibility opens up possibilities for a more collaborative 'open' production model. The example in the video is a DIY assembly manual for toys and a bike with modular parts. It is linked to the Belgian mobility project 'mobilotoop' (www.mobilotoop.net).

Sorry, Venezuela haters: this economy is not the Greece of Latin America

Sorry, Venezuela haters: this economy is not the Greece of Latin America | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

For more than a decade people opposed to the government of Venezuela have argued that its economy would implode. Like communists in the 1930s rooting for the final crisis of capitalism, they saw economic collapse just around the corner. How frustrating it has been for them to witness only two recessions: one directly caused by the opposition's oil strike (December 2002-May 2003) and one brought on by the world recession (2009 and the first half of 2010). However, the government got control of the national oil company in 2003, and the whole decade's economic performance turned out quite well, with average annual growth of real income per person of 2.7% and poverty reduced by over half, and large gains for the majority in employment, access to health care, pensions and education.

In "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith", Anakin Skywalker's defection to the Dark Side is a critical moment of personal weakness and the political abandonment of the Jedi Order. In order to save his ailing wife but tricked into believing that the Jedi Knights are corrupt, Skywalker kneels before Darth Sidious and pledges his allegiance to the Sith Order. Upon rising, he is reborn as Darth Vader, thus cementing his transformation to the Dark Side of the Force - with the power of the Sith, the Empire's vast fleet, the clone armies, and the Death Star already under development. The Death Star becomes the most powerful military weapon and mobile base to pursue and destroy the Rebel Alliance.

Animating Noam Chomsky: French Director Michel Gondry on New Film "Is the Man Who is Tall Happy?"

Animating Noam Chomsky: French Director Michel Gondry on New Film "Is the Man Who is Tall Happy?" | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
We spend the hour with French filmmaker Michel Gondry, the director of a highly unusual new film, "Is the Man Who is Tall Happy?" It is an animated representation of Gondry’s conversations with the legendary political dissident, linguist, author and MIT professor, Noam Chomsky. The innovative documentary introduces viewers to Chomsky’s theories and ideas through a series of conversations brought to life by Gondry’s vibrant hand-drawn animations. As Chomsky speaks, Gondry’s rapidly moving pencil illustrates his words. The men discuss everything from Chomsky’s pioneering work in childhood language acquisition to his views on education, religion and astrology. Gondry’s past films include the Academy Award-winning "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," the musical documentary "Dave Chappelle’s Block Party" and "The Science of Sleep." He has also directed dozens of music videos by artists including Björk, Kanye West, Paul McCartney and The Rolling Stones.
