The Greek Elections, the State and the Social Economy | P2P Foundation

The Greek Elections, the State and the Social Economy | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The recent election results in Greece could be a significant turning point in the fight against neoliberal austerity politics and an opportunity to inaugurate commons-based alternatives – from peer production to co-operatives to social economy innovations – with the support of the state. Needless to say, it is a complicated situation, not just the political and cultural dynamics within Greece, but the ambition of stepping off in new directions beyond those sanctioned by the European and global financial establishment.

Social: With the prospect of a Syriza government, everyone is wondering what the future holds for Greece.  Whether disaster or deliverance, or just the normal chaos, it is hard to ignore the potential for game-changing repercussions from a Syriza government.

4 Things You Probably Know About Poverty That Bill and Melinda Gates Don’t

4 Things You Probably Know About Poverty That Bill and Melinda Gates Don’t | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Bill and Melinda Gates just released their annual letter, "Our Big Bet for the Future," with their thoughts on the current state of global poverty and the suite of projects they are funding to tackle it. While their hopeful tone and a good deal of what they are proposing is excellent, the story they tell about poverty obscures far more than it reveals. These are not "big bets," but rather small technical fixes that can’t solve the real, underlying problems.

BITCOIN: A flawed currency blueprint with a potentially useful application for the Eurozone

BITCOIN: A flawed currency blueprint with a potentially useful application for the Eurozone | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The responses of many to my post on Bitcoin reveal a powerful tendency to underestimate the ill-effects of deflation on a social economy. This tendency to underestimate deflation’s deleterious impact matters beyond debates on Bitcoin per se. For example, in Europe the incapacity of the European Central Bank (ECB) to act in the face of deflationary forces has revealed the same type of misunderstanding, as many commentators fail to recognise that deflation is a very serious threat and that the ECB’s lack of weapons against it constitutes a major weakness. In this post I return to the problem of deflation in a Gold Standard-like monetary system (e.g. Bitcoin or, indeed, the Eurozone itself) but conclude that, almost paradoxically, the technology of Bitcoin, if suitably adapted, can be employed profitably in the Eurozone as a weapon against deflation and a means of providing much needed leeway to fiscally stressed Eurozone member-states.

Greece: The End of Austerity screening | artFix | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The battle between Greece’s radical left government Syiza and the global financial system is captivating the world. The drama could end quickly - if Greek banks collapse; it could end in a massive U-turn by Europe, or social chaos. Come and discuss the situation over food and drink with the makers of the short documentary Greece: The End of Austerity, which follows Syriza's activists, candidates and leadership from the waterfront, to remote mountain villages, to the nail biting final days.

3-D printing aims to rewrite the script on cooking and tech - The Seattle Times | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Like more traditional 3-D printers, food printers work by printing out successive layers of edible material, such as sugar. But the big challenge for companies exploring this is deciding on a viable business model. Should they be selling food cartridges? Recipes? Is this best for restaurants or home cooks?

“We think we can do better than plants”: New “bionic leaf” makes fuel from sunlight

“We think we can do better than plants”: New “bionic leaf” makes fuel from sunlight | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Here’s a new way to make fuel from sunlight: starve a microbe nearly to death, then feed it carbon dioxide and hydrogen produced with the help of voltage from a solar panel. A newly developed bioreactor feeds microbes with hydrogen from water split by special catalysts connected in a circuit with photovoltaics. Such a batterylike system may beat either purely biological or purely technological systems at turning sunlight into fuels and other useful molecules, the researchers now claim.

2014 ended on a good note. Last October, I had the opportunity to participate, together with 49 other project initiators, in the Idea Camp event in Marseille. The European Cultural Foundationpromoted this event, geared towards shaking up our views on public space. After the three-day gathering, all fifty participants were invited to present a Research and Development project to be funded during 2015. The ECF announced a set of 25 R&D grants last December, and ‘P2P Plazas: a Southern European network’ is in.

Call for Papers: “Transforming Scholarship: Open Access, Data Sharing, and Emerging Forms of Publication” | ICIS: Innovating Communication in Scholarship

Powerful changes are impacting traditional systems of research publication, academic credit, research quality assessment, and the meaning of “publication.” At the same time, traditional publishing models continue to shape how scholars produce and exchange knowledge. Understanding the scholarly communication system and its balance between transformation and continuity is a key goal for science and technology studies, as publishing practices affect scholars and scientists across all fields and levels. These changes also frame the policies of administrators evaluating and funding them, and of libraries confronting new technologies. The increasing scale and interdisciplinary nature of collaborations, as well as the growing reliance on cyberinfrastructures for producing and disseminating research, are central transformations that require a critical, theoretically oriented approach that encompasses the significance of these trends beyond communication.

Interviewed: Professor Christian Iaione on the City as Commons | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

This new phenomenon represents an opportunity to revolutionize the current state of play of the society, economy, institutions and law. This new social, economic, institutional and legal paradigm is going to characterize the 21st century as the “CO-century,” the century of COmmons, COllaboration, COoperation, COmmunity, COmmunication, CO-design, CO-production, CO-management, COexistence, CO-living. For all these reasons, it is urgent to design the rules and institutions of this new century. LabGov.it is working on this frontier and is doing it together with experts, organizations, and individuals that represent what we think is a newly rising social class, a class of economic and institutional innovators.

Beyond the Market-State: Decentralizing Power in a Sharing Society

Beyond the Market-State: Decentralizing Power in a Sharing Society | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
In an era of politics characterised by unconstrained corporate lobbying, a well-oiled ‘revolving door’ between industry and government, and an endless stream of campaign contributions from dirty oil and other lucrative industries, is the long-championed ideal of a truly democratic state now a lost cause? Should concerned citizens and activists turn their attention instead to establishing sustainable economic alternatives within their towns and communities?

Digital Reality

Digital Reality | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

…Today, you can send a design to a fab lab and you need ten different machines to turn the data into something. Twenty years from now, all of that will be in one machine that fits in your pocket. This is the sense in which it doesn’t matter. You can do it today. How it works today isn’t how it’s going to work in the future but you don’t need to wait twenty years for it. Anybody can make almost anything almost anywhere.
