Tony Martins | Guerilla Magazine

Tony Martins | Guerilla Magazine | Pecha Kucha Ottawa Vol. 4 - March 27th, 2012, Ottawa Arts Court | Scoop.it

There’s something unsettling about Tony Martins. Unsettling, that is, if you expect someone with publisher/editor/writer after his name to have a definite plan of what his next issue, and maybe the one after that, should contain.

And if that content is shifting from Ottawa culture to all-of-Canada culture, then why does he simply shrug when I ask what Guerilla 31 will be about when it is posted in March? “You know, it’s never really been a goal-oriented thing. It’s evolved, about making an impact with whatever you have at your disposal,” he says.

François Levesque | Apartment613

François Levesque | Apartment613 | Pecha Kucha Ottawa Vol. 4 - March 27th, 2012, Ottawa Arts Court | Scoop.it

Ottawa ain’t so bad. From New Edinburgh to Old Ottawa South to Westboro and beyond, artists, musicians, boutique stores, and culture abound. In fact, Apartment613 suspects the town’s staid and serious reputation may be nothing more than a convenient cover for its wild and crazy alter ego. Committed to connecting people to their neighborhoods, the site is a place where we can learn and talk about new and exciting people, places, and goings on. We hope Apartment613 will be a platform for participation and community building. Everyone is welcome, so come on over!

The Awesome Foundation for the Arts and Sciences is an ever-growing, worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of awesomeness in the universe.

Created in the long hot summer days of 2009 in Boston, the Foundation distributes a series of monthly $1,000 grants to projects and their creators. The money is pooled together from the coffers of each individual, or “micro-trustee,” and given up front in cash, check, or gold doubloons. The chapters are autonomous, made of 10 or so microtrustees, and assemble around geographic areas or topics of interest.

A Manifesto for Pecha Kucha Ottawa on "Creative City-Making"

A Manifesto for Pecha Kucha Ottawa on "Creative City-Making" | Pecha Kucha Ottawa Vol. 4 - March 27th, 2012, Ottawa Arts Court | Scoop.it

We need to drag out the old thinking about "city-building" from a land-use urban engineering (top-down, centrally-planned) perspective to one of creative "city-making" distinguished as ground-level, organic, and surprisingly self-organized.

Melanie Yugo and Jason Pelletier | Spins & Needles | Pecha Kucha Ottawa Vol. 4 - March 27th, 2012, Ottawa Arts Court | Scoop.it

Spins & Needles is a mobile art party that travels to different cities around the world. First conceived in Montreal by designer Melanie Yugo and DJ Jason Pelletier, they threw the first event as a way to create a temporary space for creative types to get together, listen to music and make stuff. It quickly caught on; since then, over 100 events and workshops have been produced in the US, Canada, UK and Europe, serving up local and international DJs playing the freshest underground beats mixed with cutting-edge art/design projects.

Evan Thornton and Adam Bentley | Dream Transit Plan

Evan Thornton and Adam Bentley | Dream Transit Plan | Pecha Kucha Ottawa Vol. 4 - March 27th, 2012, Ottawa Arts Court | Scoop.it

Whether you develop a plan to improve public space or a recipe for a new ice cream flavour, a good idea can spread like wildfire if it is presented properly –and you don’t need a degree in communications to do so. Several months ago, I developed a long-term vision for mass transit in Ottawa. Self-described “transit nerds” referred to this map as a “dream transit plan” or “fantasy transit map”. However, upon releasing the map online, a captive audience of urban and transit enthusiasts took the plan very seriously and provided useful feedback and compliments. After tweaking the proposal, I quickly found that this idea had received such a positive reception that discussion spread online through SkyscraperPage.com and TransitOttawa.ca.
