LinkedIn moves to “protect members’ data” as it kills off headhunting app Pealk

LinkedIn moves to “protect members’ data” as it kills off headhunting app Pealk | Pealk, the startup that threatened LinkedIn! | Scoop.it

There is, of course, the issue of competition. Pealk rivals LinkedIn’s premium services, which allow recruiters and firms to search its users for headhunting, so the move to kill off the app will — deliberately or otherwise — protect these paid-for service from a free alternative.

Glennlist » Linkedin You Suck for Killing Pealk

Pealk rocked. It was great for recruiters who couldn’t afford a million dollar recruiter account. Linkedin realized it too late. Pealk was growing and it did something Linkedin didn’t like. It became popular. So, Linkedin shuts down their API access.

Golden felt that it was more than just an API problem. “I think that the many reviews and tweets underlining that Pealk’s interface, user experience and productivity (especially with profile flow to seamlesly browse LinkedIn profiles) were better than LinkedIn recruiter,” he said. “We knew the positioning was risky, but considering the discussion with LinkedIn, we thought they were really open to this kind of innovation.”

Why is the #1 headhunter app Pealk shutting down today? | Pealk, the startup that threatened LinkedIn! | Scoop.it

I caught up with Pealk CEO Boris Golden to ask him about how he felt about the situation, and what the plans were for the future. The first thing he told me was about how shocked he was about how everything turned out: not because they cut access to the API, but that they did it without warning after eight weeks of negotiating a partnership.

[From Canada] Why Linkedin now says "no" to Pealk?

For my part, I thought that given the opportunities around Pealk, Linkedin would probably buy them in the near future. Linkedin has preferred instead to exclude them. Maybe they work internally on something similar?

If Linkedin decides to exclude Pealk, I think it demonstrates the enormous potential of this application. Like many, I am disappointed by this decision. [via Google Translate]

Pealk has over has about 2,500 users worldwide. Essentially, the app helps recruiters search and view results at a glance, quickly browse and sort through LinkedIn profiles, create templates, track interactions and export them to a CRM, and organize profiles into custom folders. LinkedIn reportedly said that Pealk is in clear violation of LinkedIn’s terms of use and is abusing the guidelines in place to protect its members’ data. At this time, we’re still wondering how Pealk violated LinkedIn’s guidelines and terms.

I also find it hard to believe that if LinkedIn did warn Pealk, that they wouldn’t change to stay in business--they have obviously put a lot of effort into their company. And without more communication from LinkedIn it’s easy to get suspicious about their motivations.
